Forming the Wild Bunch

Back in the early 1980s, I was looking for a way to
generate additional income to help support our family
farming operation. I decided to try my hand at painting
wildlife.

My success, in large part, was due to the support I
received from my buyers in Glasgow and the surrounding
communities. As a much younger, beginning artist, I
needed the encouragement that came with those sales
to pursue my artwork.
After thirty-two years of farming between Fort
Peck and Nashua, we sold our farm and moved to
southwestern Montana. The art lovers of the Glasgow
area had been consistent in purchasing my work for
all those years. I wanted them to know how much that
was appreciated. Therefore, I created the Glasgow Wild
Bunch Art Show.
This is an annual event in which I participate,
exhibiting my artwork. I also invite about a dozen
additional artists to show their creations to my friends
and collectors in the area. It has become a reunion
of sorts and a way for me to bring the people of

will I forget all of those who helped me along the way. I
am grateful to an awesome, loving God who brought us
all together. Therefore, I extend a huge Thank You to

A strong cold frontal system will make its way
through the region Wednesday morning. Behind
this cold front, very strong northwest winds are
expected. Forecast speeds are in the 35-45 mph
for sustained winds with gusts as high as 65 mph!!
Remember, exercise extreme caution when driving
in these high wind conditions, and if you still have
any loose items sitting around outdoors, do your
best to secure them.

Looking at Glasgows National Weather Service
hourly graph, gusts of up to 55 mph are expected
to hit by 10:00 and increase from there before
dropping off to gusts of just under 50 mph about
the time most folks are getting off work at 5 or 5:30.
Gusts are expected to drop under 30 mph at around
5:00 Thursday morning.
Tonight: A chance of rain and snow showers after
11pm. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 30. South wind
11 to 21 mph, with gusts as high as 29 mph. Chance
of precipitation is 30%. Little or no snow accumulation
expected.
Wednesday: A 20 percent chance of snow showers
before 11am. Partly sunny, with a high near 37 which
is expected around 1:00 and dropping to 30 degrees by
5:00. Windy, with a northwest wind 33 to 41 mph, with
gusts as high as 60 mph, making for some cold wind chill

Remember: Hunting is Fun

Somehow we have forgotten that hunting today

is about being outdoors, perhaps companionship,
enjoying nature.
There are some in the hunting fraternity that
believe going a season without bringing anything home
is a disaster. Really? When did that law pass? And what
governor signed it?
Its okay to smile and shake your head when
someone asks, did you get your elk?

Look, most of us are not going to find a cure for
cancer, bat cleanup for a major league baseball team or
walk on Mars. So why not enjoy the little victories life
offers.

Victories like hunting with a good friend.
Like seeing the sunset gleam on a silent, snowcovered prairie.

Like teaching a youngster the safe, ethical way to
hunt.

Lets not be corny here oh forget it, heres corn:

When I was much (much!) younger and ready to
solve all the worlds ills, a relative told me theres nothing
wrong with settling down and just being a good citizen.
Transferring that sentiment to hunting, its great
to take home a huge bull elk or trophy mule deer. But
whats wrong with spending the day taking your gun
for a walk?
Every hunting season, the stories that make the
news are shoot-outs at elk herds, trespassing hunters
and landowners with closed gates. Unfortunately, those
stories are taken up as gospel by non-hunters. Believe
me, Ive heard them.
Call me nave, but Im convinced those actions
represent the minority of hunters. The vast majority are
just good citizens, doing the right thing and enjoying
themselves.
Hunting is leisure time, not a competitive sport,

despite those big buck contests you sometimes see in

other states.

To quote the over-quoted Aldo Leopold, father of
modern wildlife management: The man who cannot
enjoy his leisure is ignorant, though his degrees exhaust
the alphabet, and the man who does enjoy his leisure is
to some extent educated, though he has never seen the
inside of a school.

Modern hunting for most is not about subsistence
living. Its been proven time and again that the money
spent on hunting, to include everything such as guns,
ammunition, clothing, four-wheel-drive pickups, could
easily be spent on food at the grocery store.
Hunting today is a hobby. Its fine to be serious,
even passionate, about your hobby, just remember a
hobby is a gamble. It can result in a freezer full of game
or not, but either way its time well spent, one of lifes
little victories.
Of course the opposite of lifes little victories are
lifes little mistakes.

Like having a big buck walk up on you, then spook
and run off when you turn around to see what the noise is.

Like realizing you brought the wrong ammunition
after you got up before dawn, drove two hours, and
walked up a mountain.

Like finding the elk you shot in a deep ravine and
knowing you are going to have a long day of dragging
uphill.

Mistakes happen, its human.

More important, its hunting.

OBITUARY

Frosty

Lawren A. Frosty Frost, 81,

of Glasgow passed away of natural
causes, at Frances Mahon Deaconess
Hospital, November 15, 2015.
A Memorial Service will be held
10:00 a.m., Monday, November
23 at the American Legion Hall
in Hinsdale, Montana. Burial will
follow in the Hinsdale Cemetery
with a luncheon following at the
American Legion Hall.
Lawren was born March 19,
1934 in Glasgow, Montana to
Myron and Dorothy (Anderson)
Frost. He resided in Hinsdale on
the family farm and attended school
thru the 10th grade. He played
basketball and helped on the farm.
He joined the Navy in January of
1952 and served during the Korean
War. He was Honorably Discharged
in March of 1955.
He married Susan Stuart in May
of 1955 and from this marriage they

had six children: Stuart, Danny, Bill,

Jacquie, Jnine, and Angelique. The
couple later divorced and later he
married Anita Wokal Poling. Anita
passed away in 2012.
Frosty had various occupations,
including: Vita Rich Dairy, Sams
Supper Club, Farm Equipment
Sales where he was a parts man for
approximately 15 years. In October
of 1982 he purchased the Oasis
Lounge. Upon selling the business
he went to work for Markles
Implement as a Parts Manager.
Frosty worked hard all of his
life but never passed up having a
good time! Whether participating or
watching, he was a diehard Griz fan
and watched all the games when he
could.
He was a proud member of the
VFW Lodge and the Elks Lodge.
Preceding him in death are his
parents; wife, Anita; brothers, Myron
Schultz, Harold Frost, and William
Frost; sisters, Margie Schultz,

Lucille Williams, and Iona Sonsteng;

and grandson, Bradley Dittus.
Frosty is survived by children,
Stuart (Hollie) Frost, Danny (Rosa)
Frost, Bill (Staci)Frost, Jacquie (Joe)
Cates, Jnine Dittus, and Angelique
Frost; grandchildren, Josh, Lacey,
Amber, Krystal, Campbell, Yolanda,
Nathan, Ryan, Jesse, Hope, Shelbi,
and Vann; four great-grandchildren;
brother, Walter (Marian) Frost; and
numerous nieces and nephews.

Many times over the years, Ive been asked, How
are you able to build a business selling art in such a
remote region of Montana?
I respond, You cannot imagine the wealth of
talented artists living in that part of our state.
This very interesting situation has created some
of the most sophisticated art buyers I have ever met.
They are not impressed by fame or swayed by someone
elses opinion of the artwork. Their past exposure to
fabulous art enables them to confidently judge artwork
for themselves. In other words, they know what they
like and they have seen enough to recognize excellent
quality.

Therefore, at an art show in the area, a beginning
artist can be as successful as a well-seasoned one.
This creates an exciting event for the artists, as you
never know when you may make your best sale ever.
It certainly could happen at the Glasgow Wild Bunch
Art Show. Many of my most successful shows over the
past thirty-some years have occurred there.

Please join The Wild Bunch in Celebrating their
15th Anniversary Fall Show beginning this Friday,
November 20th and continuing through Sunday,
November 22nd at the Cottonwood Inn in Glasgow.
The show features a talented group of artists that
specialize in varied media, including painting, bronze,
fused glass art, jewelry, metal art, and woodcarving. This
diverse assortment of art comes at extremely reasonable
prices. Not only is the show free to the public, it presents
a one-of-a-kind opportunity to meet the artists in
