A.

The simple past

Use:
We use the present simple to express an action that started
and finished in the past
Form:
Subject +Verb (simple past)
Key words:
Last month/year/week/Monday/night, yesterday, 2
minutes/hours/days ago, in1930, the other day
Examples:
1) I met my friends yesterday
2) Did you go to the seaside last summer?
3) He opened the door, switched on the light and fed his cat
4) They never drunk wine
5) He didnt work the other day
6) He bought a red car
7) We visited my grandfather yesterday

B.

The past continuous

Use:
We use the past continuous to talk about an event which
went for a period of time in the past.
Form:

Subject + (was/were) + verb in the ing form
Examples:
1) In the 1990s few people were using mobile phones
2) I was watching TV when you phoned
3) As we were driving down the hill, a strange object
appeared in the sky
4) While Laura was sitting in the garden, it suddenly began
to rain.
5) I was studying math, now I understand it well
6) The baby was sleeping the whole time
7) I was playing football when it was raining
C. The past perfect Simple:
Use:
We use the past perfect simple to talk about an event
that took place before a specific time in the past
To talk about an action that happened before another
one in the past
Form:
Subject + had +verb (past participle)
Key words:
Already, Never, When, by the time, After, Before, until
Examples:
1) When the mother got, the baby had already slept
2) I had never eaten caviar not Kimchi
3) After he had finished the report he went home
4) Before she posted a letter, she had written it
5) He didnt leave until he had spoken to his boss
6) By the time I got to the office the director had already
arrived
7) When I had finished my homework I went to bed

The past perfect continuous

Use:
We use it to say what had been happening before something
else happened or to report what others had said or think or
believe
Form:
Subject+ had been +verb in the ing form
Key words:
For, since, the whole day, all day
Examples:
1) It had been snowing for a while before we left
2) We had been playing tennis for only a few minutes when
it started raining
3) He was out of breath when he arrived because he had
been running
4) Before his mother arrived , Paul had been playing football
with his friends
5) She said he had been trying to call me all day
6) They said they had been shopping
7) I told you I had been looking for some new clothes
