Walk the City: Dayton Crime Lab
When thinking of a crime lab, the first thing that probably comes to
mind are reruns of Law and Order, NCIS, and CSI. You may imagine
Detectives Olivia Benson and Elliot Stabler going door-to-door, serving search
warrants, dodging bullets, and ultimately, catching the perpetrator. While
Benson and Stabler surely get the most screen time, if we look at their jobs
from a real life perspective, we would see they are not the only ones pouring
sweat, blood, and tears into their work.
Beyond the foot work of detectives and other forms of law
enforcement, you may find yourself in a forensic laboratory, much like our
very own here in Dayton, Ohio. On many popular crime series, scanning
finger prints and removing bullet fragments are common forms practiced to
determine the cause of death or the identity of a wanted person. In fact, our
forensic lab assists 70 agencies in this field; a number that has grown since
the lab opened in 1969. A famous, and controversial, Montgomery County
case that is easily recalled is the Sarah Widmer case, better known as the
Mystery in the Master Bedroom (titled by NBC dateline). Sarahs husband,
Ryan Widmer, found her face down in a tub of water. After authorities and
emergency services arrived, some suspicion arose about her cause of death.
Although Ryan Widmer was ultimately found guilty for his wifes murder,
those who followed the case felt a lack of evidence was provided by the
forensic lab to find Widmer guilty. Many were outraged when the judge
presiding over the hearing denied the forensic laboratory permission to test
Sarah Widmers body for a rare genetic disorder that may have caused her
death.
If the Miami Valley Regional Crime Lab had been granted permission to
test Sarah for this rare genetic disorder, would they have found what Ryan

was looking for? Would it have been another dead end? While this is not the
only well-known case our forensic lab has assisted in, one can only imagine
the turmoil felt by Ryan and Sarahs loved ones when a lack of evidence
could not disprove Ryans involvement with his wifes death. With a lack of
evidence, only speculation can prove Ryan guilty or innocent as this case
flows through ones mind.
