CHAPTER 2

PASSIVE
COMPONENT
RESISTORS
1

RESISTORS
the most common components in electronic
equipment
is manufactured with specific value of ohms
for its resistance (R)
the purpose of using a resistor in a circuit
is either to reduce current (I) to a specific
value or to provide a desired voltage (V)

Kinds of Resistors
1.Fixed Resistor
2.Variable Resistor
3

Fixed Resistor
any resistor whose resistance is
not adjustable or variable, but
it is fixed during manufacture
it limits the current in a circuit
4

Variable Resistor

this varies in the current or

voltage
it is used as the volume
control and contrast and
tone controls

Types of Resistors
according to
Resistive Elements
Used
6

1. Carbon composition
resistor

2. Metal glaze resistor

3. Glass-tin oxide resistor

4. Precision wire-wound
resistor

10

Power Rating of a
Resistor

11

Power Rating of a Resistor

is a physical property
depending on the resistor
construction, especially
the physical size
12

Factors Affecting
the Wattage of
Resistors
13

Factors Affecting the Wattage of

Resistors
1.Larger physical size indicates a higher power
rating.
2.Higher wattage resistor can operate at higher
temperature.
3.Wire-wound resistors are physically larger with
higher voltage rating than carbon resistors.
14

Defects of
Resistors

15

Defects of Resistors
1. OPEN
.there is no
flow of power
in the entire
series path
.the meter
pointer of an
ohmmeter will
not move

16

Defects of Resistors
2. CHANGE VALUE
this exceeds the maximum and minimum
tolerance percentage
such value means that the resistor is
defective

To determine the values of carbon resistors
Interpret the four-color bands printed on their bodies

RESISTOR TOLERANCE
the minimum and maximum tolerable value of a resistor
Example:
Determine the color-coded values of the following resistors.

2.BLUE GREEN BROWN SILVER
3.RED RED RED GOLD
4.WHITE WHITE ORANGE NO COLOR
5.BLUE BLACK BLACK SILVER
