EARLY LIFE
David Bowie was born in Brixton, London,
on 8 January 1947 as David Robert Jones.
His talent was recognised when he was
only 6 years old.
At the age of 10 he was member of school
choir and he was attending music and
movement classes.
At the same age his interest in music was
stimulated by his father when he brought
home vinyl records ofThe Platters,Fats
Domino and Elvis Presley.

Bowie was
attending
Bromley Tehnical
High School.
There he got into
a fight over a girl
with his friend
George
Underwood who
permanently
damaged his left
eye.

THE
KONRADS
Bowie formed
his first band The
Konrads in 1962
It was influenced
by Blues, Elvis
Presley and
British pop music.
Bowies fashion
style was fitted
suits and ties
typical for that
area.

Bowies life started to change when he met


Lindsay Kemp, his dramatic art teacher
In 1969 Bowie met and fall in love with
Angela Barnett. A year later they married
and got a son Duncan.
Angela had a huge influence on Bowies
early career keeping him surrounded by
characters and an environment that
allowed him to fully express his
eccentricities into stage personas.

Angela and Bowie were


an uncommon couple.
They often looked alike
when going out, with
Bowie wearing flowing
locks, trousers and
blouses.
His idea was to look
more like an alien
character than like a
woman

In 1970 he published the album The


man who sold the world, on which
cover he posed in a satin dress with
long flowing hair.

ZIGGY STARDUST
On his first visit to New York, he met Andy
Wharhol and group of actors from The Factory
They inspired him to cut off his long hair and
move away from singing folk songs
The Velvet Underground began to influence
Bowie, he found it very important because it
was mixture of rock and roll and avant-garde.
He felt the wild side of America and brought
that back to England as Ziggy Stardust.

In 1972 he published the album Rise


and Fall of Ziggy Stardust and the
Spiders from Mars
Ziggy Stardust became Bowies most
visually memorable persona, the
character that would make Bowie a
worldwide sensation.

His fashion style


was inspired by
Japanese Kabuki
theatre and his
make-up by Alice
Cooper.
He had dyed his
hair in red and
started to wear
elaborate make
up, feather boas,
jumpsuits with
heels, long
flowing tops and
other genderbending items.

THE THIN withe duke


In 1974 Bowie moved
to USA and published
album Diamond Dogs
A year later he
published his new
album Young
Americans which Bowie
identified as "plastic
soul"
The album was
followed with a radical
shift in his style

With album Station to Station from


1976 Bowie introduced his new
persona the Thin Withe Duke
During that time Bowie was wearing
a stylish,cabaret-style wardrobe,
fedora, suits, white shirts, black
trousers and waistcoats.
He was consuming a massive
amounts of cocaine and his physical
and mental health were threatened.

In 1977 Bowie moved to West


Berlin after reliasing how
harmfull drug adiction was for
him.
During that period (1977-1979)
he successfully solve the drug
addiction and published three
albums (Low, Heroes
andLodger) that became known
as Berlin Trilogy.
Towards the end of 1979, Bowie
and Angela initiated divorce
proceedings, and after months
of court battles the marriage
was ended in early 1980.

Bowie reached a new peak


of popularity and
commercial success in 1983
with albumLet's Dance.
He was wearing highwaisted cream trousers and
shirts, and had bleached his
hair.
In the eighties he has
developed as an actor and
was acting in several movies
as : The Elephant Man,
Christiane F. Wir Kinder
vom Bahnhof Zoo, The
Hunger, Labyrinth etc.

In 1990 Bowie met Iman, Somali supermodel.


They married in 1992.
From 1989 to 1991 Bowie formed a band Tin
Machine. It was his first band after early 1970s.
They made two albums but only first album Tin
Machine made a success.
During 90s he was experimenting with different
music genres and had published several albums
from which the most known became Earthling from
1997.
Bowie was inducted into theRock and Roll Hall of
Fameon 17 January 1996.

In 2004 Bowie survived


a heart attack.
Bowie was awarded
with theGrammy
Lifetime Achievement
Awardon 8 February
2006.
On 8 January 2013 (his
66th birthday) he
published a new album
The Next Day.

Throughout his career, Bowie has always remained true to his


image, always breaking new ground. A constant chameleon in our
changing culture, no matter what his age, Bowie pushes new
boundaries in both fashion and music. His impact can be found in
both mens and womens fashion. David Bowie has been an icon in
style for so long that he now serves as an icon for otherstyle
icons, which gives him a heightened status.
