Tracy Knecht was a successful student of Elizabeth Fargey in a curriculum course, completing a unit that demonstrated knowledge of the program of studies. Fargey observed Tracy during a nine-week practicum where she taught 120 grade 7 students, addressing their diverse needs. Tracy created detailed lesson plans that engaged students through technology like Kahoot. She emphasized classroom management and used various approaches to deal with problems. Assessment focused on improving student learning and guiding Tracy's teaching. Students demonstrated their mastery of probability through a culminating carnival game project. Fargey was impressed with Tracy's well-developed instructional plans.

Sessional Instructor University of Alberta (Red Deer College) EDES 366 Social Studies RE: Reference Letter for Tracy Knecht I am writing this reference letter on behalf of Tracy Knecht. I have known her within my class as well as covering a nine-week practicum at Eastview. In the fall of 2015, Tracy was very successful as a student in my curriculum course. She completed a unit that showed knowledge of the program of studies as well as creative use of resources. This has also been mirrored in her practicum at her school. Tracys assignment at Eastview included teaching 120 students at grade seven. She had to address a variety of special needs and language needs as appropriate, including use of accomodations and ELL strategies. I have observed her weekly from February to April (2016). She was able to see the benefit of long term planning as she planned and executed a unit on probability from start to finish (culminating activity included). What I saw was detailed lesson plans which included opener, curriculum outcomes, resources, student considerations, technology if needed and closure. She created a bulletin board that showed students where they were going. Her objectives and vocabulary were clearly posted for students to see. Tracy was very organized and flexible with what she wanted to accomplish, as one needs to be in a middle school. Students were required to think, solve problems, create examples, and work through vocabulary that involved higher order thinking. Ms. Knecht has consistent evidence of lessons plans that have clear instructional goals and objectives that are appropriate for all students in the classroom. Tracy is to be commended for her planning. She was able to engage students in the rapidly expanding field of computer technology. She used Kahoot to engage students in their practise. Tracy circulates among the students as they work collaboratively, to monitor learning, stimulate discussion, and provoke thinking. She emphasized students raising their hands, not talking when she did and dealt with problems using a variety of approaches. Tracy has gone over and above her duty in being readily available to help students. Assessment practices were clearly focused on improving student learning and guiding Tracys teaching decisions and actions. Students had the opportunity to demonstrate their mastery of probability with an exit slip or collected independent practice activities. Included in her unit was a culminating project where students created a carnival game. All of her classes had great fun! Today, effective teaching practices centre on the importance of learning opportunities that are thoughtfully designed to engage students. I have been very impressed with Tracy and her welldeveloped plans of instruction. Please don't hesitate to contact me. Elizabeth Fargey efargey@ualberta.ca Cell 403 505 2324
