Chapter 5 Summary
Deviance in Sports
Legends in sports are made by the stats they leave behind once the
game is over and the jersey has been hung up. Legends names are
remembered and revered for eternity in the hall of fame. Everyone who
plays sports has that goal of being the best to ever do it, the best to ever
play his or her game. That goal would lead to a professional career with the
sport and then getting eternally marked down in the hall of fame for your
sport. Many try to achieve that goal by taking shortcuts, or knowingly
altering their performance with enhancing drugs or substances. Those who
cut corners or cheat are called deviants, and deviance is defined as an
instance when a persons ideas, traits, or actions are perceived by others to
fall outside the normal range of acceptance in a society (Coakley 108).
There are many forms of cheating and deviance that can occur, whether it be
substance abuse, rules infractions, or actions on the field of play the range is
wide and a lot has been done. Deviance is a broad subject and has trouble
being labeled accurately when implemented, so it is broken down into formal
deviance and informal deviance. It is very easy to be deviant when dealing
with sports, simply missing a practice or not participating to full potential is
being deviant and everyone has their off days, it doesnt mean they are
doing it on purpose.
Deviance is mostly noted when violence or blatant cheating is
involved. Many athletes are given the opportunity to do things they cant in
the real world, such as football and MMA. These sports allow the participants
to physically harm the other person for sport. Whether it be punching or
tackling, the risk of severe injury is there every play and every event. The
drive for being Better, Faster, Stronger is the rage and many athletes
would do whatever it takes in order to get to that stage in their careers. If
the athlete does not feel they are capable of getting to that pinnacle, then
they may turn to supplements to better their performance. This is where the
issues lay.
The term of deviance is relevant to the user and may not be the same
worldwide. You base this off of social norms or sports norms. Aggressive
play might be more custom in certain areas, while a more technical approach
may be taken, which would lead the opposing team to think they are using
deviant ways and not playing fair. Sports ethic set somewhat of a standard
or norm in arenas worldwide. Dedication to the game creates the best
competition amongst athletes and this shows prevalent in the Olympics.
Unfortunately, you also have heavy deviance should someone fail a drug
test. This not only causes controversy but issues in the games and sporting
itself. I do not believe cheating should take place, just sheer winners and
losers based off of skill and talent. That is what strives people to train
harder, train better, etc. But during this training when goals are not met, the
sad face of sports shows itself. Deviance takes over and the players ignore
the norms or the consequences that come with their actions.
