What are sounds???
 There are 44 sounds in english out of which 19
are vowel sounds and the rest 25 are consonant
sounds.
 Basically, sounds represent the ways in which
each vowel or consonant is spoken.
 Each individual sound is sometimes referred to
as a grapheme or phoneme.
 There are over 70 ways to spell these sounds,
which we refer to as phonograms.
Vowel Sounds
 Vowel sounds comprises of the various heads
under them:
1. 5 long vowels
2. 5 short vowels
3. 3 dipthongs
4. A long and a short oo (2 sounds)
5. 4 ‘r’ controlled vowel sounds
5 Long Vowel Sounds
 The following are some of the long vowel
sounds and their usage in words:
1. Long /a/ - gate,cake
2. Long /e/ - need,feet
3. Long /i/ - nice,bike
4. Long /o/ - yoke,boat
5. Long /u/ - you,cube
5 Short Vowel Sounds
 Following are some of the short vowel sounds
and their uasge:
1. Short /a/ - bat,cat
2. Short /e/ - bet,bed
3. Short /i/ - bit,fish
4. Short /o/ - lock,dock
5. Short /u/ - but,duck
3 Diphthongs
 A dipthong is a combination of two sounds, each
with different spellings.
 Examples:

1. au- Paul

aw- crawl
2. ou- mouse
ow- cow
3. oi- noise

ow- boy
A Long and Short OO sound
1. Long /oo/ - moon
2. Short /oo/ - book
4 ‘r’ controlled sounds
 These sounds comprise of a vowel alongwith
the ‘r’ sound. Such sounds are:
1. or - more,bore,core
2. ar - car,alarm
3. er - her
4. air - fair,chair
Consonant Sounds
1. /b/ - bat
2. /d/ - dog
3. /f/ - fan
4. /g/ - gate
5. /h/ - hat
6. /j/ - jump
7. /k/ - kite
8. /l/ -leaf
9. /m/ -mop
10. /n/ -nest
11. /p/ - pig
12. /r/ - rock
13. /s/ - sun
14. /t/ - top
15. /v/ - vase
16. /w/ -wagon
17. /y/ - yo-yo
18. /z/ - zebra
19. /ch/ - cheese
20. /sh/ - shark
21. / th/ - thumb
22. /th/ - the
23 /hw/ - wheel
24. /zh/ - treasure
25. /ng/ - ring
Exceptions
 You must be wondering why the letters c,q and x
are not used as sounds???
 Examples:

1. The letter c can be represented by the


phonemes /k/ or /s/ as in cent.
2. The letter x as in fox can be represented by two
phonemes /ks/.
3. The letter q can be represented by two
phonemes /kw/.
