The human body needs lots
of different nutrients to
function properly. Nutrients
are found in the food that
we eat.

No single type of food can
give us all the nutrients we
need. We need to eat lots of
different foods in different
amounts.

This means that whilst no food
should be excluded from our
diets, we need to be careful
about the amount we eat of
each food.

t¶s not hard to create a
healthy diet that is tasty and
interesting which can help
keep us healthy!

Love your health
!

Our bodies are amazing!

Did you know we produce
new skin every month and
a new skeleton every three
months? We only get one
body so it is important to
keep fit and well.
!

Did you know that we use

our muscles all the time?
We must keep active to
help make our muscles
strong.
!

Did you know that every

second, every minute and
every hour of every day our
hearts pump blood around
our bodies? The blood is
delivering oxygen to every
part of our bodies.
!

Did you know it is very

important to eat well and to
keep active? Together,
exercise and a balanced
diet help to keep us healthy.
!

Did you know that inside

our body are important
organs?
Do you know what they
are and what they do?
!

Our brains control the whole

body and it¶s a bit like a
computer because it stores lots
and lots of information. Eating
the right food helps us to
concentrate and helps our brains
work better.
!

Our hearts are about the same

size as our fists and will beat
over 3 billion times during our life
times. t¶s very important to eat a
balanced diet and to exercise to
keep our hearts healthy.
!

t¶s important to keep our lungs

healthy and avoid things like
smoking. Vmoking damages our
lungs¶ delicate airways and
causes disease.
!

t¶s important to drink 6 - 8

glasses of fluids every day.
Water helps our kidneys flush
out waste from our bodies which
comes out in our urine.
!

Our livers our the largest of all

our internal organs. t stores iron
reserves, as well as vitamins and
minerals.
!

t is important to eat the right mix

of food because this is easy for
our stomachs to digest.
!

t takes between 2 ± 6 hours for

the food we have eaten to travel
to our small intestines. That is
even longer than a train journey
from London to Birmingham or
Dublin to Cork!
!

The large intestine is also called

the bowel. We must all make
sure we eat enough fibre in our
diets so our large intestines work
properly.
ã

Did you know that exercise is

just as important as a healthy
diet?
Do you know what effect
exercise has on your body
during and afterwards?
ã

n pairs, follow the

instructions on worksheet 8,
V

to find out how exercise
effects your body.
ã

Take it in turns and don¶t

forget to record your findings
on your worksheet.
ã

Be careful when you do the

exercises and if you feel
uncomfortable at any time
make sure you let the
teacher know.
