American Century Spring Exam Essay Questions
Directions: Below please find three essay questions. You will choose one to answer
during the exam period. You may practice outlining and writing your essay ahead of
time, but you will not be permitted to use anything during the exam.
Questions:
1. Pick a decade in U.S. history between 1860-1970 and craft a thesis arguing why
these ten years were most formative in the nation’s development. Justify your
assertion by providing information on any conflict, leadership or legislation that
made the years so memorable. You will need to be comfortable with dates!
2. This semester we have studied the Civil War, the Indian Wars, the Spanish-
American War, WWI, WWII, the Cold War and the Korean Conflict. Which wars
necessitated American involvement and which wars didn’t? How have these
conflicts shaped American attitudes towards war over time and influenced our
foreign policy?
3. We have discussed many people and events that have served to make the ideals of
the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution a reality for the entire
population of the United States. What were the three most important events or
people who attempted to do this post-1860? What made them most important?
*On Tuesday, provide a proper heading in the corner of your loose-leaf paper or
exam blue books, then simply title your essay one of three things; Decade, Conflict,
or Ideals.
