Pre Engineering Robotics

This course teaches students the engineering design process and how to apply it to create robotics projects. Students will learn how to [1] use the engineering design process to create designs, [2] test designs using scientific methods and analyze the results, and [3] create technical drawings and use CAD software to design projects. They will also learn electrical engineering, pneumatics, programming, and how to build and program simple robots. The goal is for students to be able to design, build, program and test their own robotics projects.

STEM: Pre-Engineering: Robotics Learning Objectives: Upon completion of this course, the student will be able to:

1. Use the Engineering Design Process to create a design. (E) 2. Test, gather data, and analyze a design using Engineering Analysis and the Scientific Method. (S,
E, M)

3. Create and dimension hand sketches of their ideas. (T, M) 4. Use SolidWorks to create engineering drawings from hand sketches. (T, E) 5. Safely use hand and power tools to construct a project. (T) 6. Identify basic electrical components (batteries, resistors, capacitors, transistors, switches, etc.) and
determine their characteristics and values. (S, E, M)

7. Use hand analysis to determine expected voltage, current, resistance, and power values in an
electrical circuit. (E, M)

8. Use a SPICE program to simulate an electrical circuit. (T, E) 9. Construct an electrical circuit given a schematic. (T) 10. Use a Digital Multi-Meter to test an electrical circuit. (T, E, M) 11. Demonstrate Boyles Law and Charless Law as they apply to pneumatic systems. (S) 12. Assemble a pneumatic circuit given a schematic.(T) 13. Use simple machines to accomplish a task. (S, T) 14. Use electric motors and control circuits to power a simple machine. (T, E) 15. Use a pneumatic system to power a simple machine. (T, E) 16. Identity types of sensors and describe their use. (S, T, E) 17. Program a microcontroller to accomplish some task. (T, E, M) 18. Design, build, program, and test a simple robot to accomplish some task. (E) 19. Use measuring tools to check a product for design conformance. (S, T, M) 20. Present a project design portfolio including a description of design methodology, analysis, design
and assembly drawings, schematics, bills of material, costs, and product prototype in a professional manner. (E) 21. (Optional) Use LabVIEW to create a program (VI) to perform a specific task. (S, T, E, M) Science, (S) = 7 Technology, (T) = 14 Engineering, (E) = 14 Mathematics, (M) = 8
