We always begin our school year with several days of color themed activities. This gives us a chance to get to know our students and their academic levels while reviewing skills and establishing our routines and schedules. Each day we focus on a different color. We do a variety of activities that involve vocabulary recognition, literature, art, and writing. We ask parents to volunteer to send special color day snacks for us and we have the students all try to dress in our color of the day. We hope you and your students enjoy this unit as much as we always do. If you have any questions, comments or feedback we would love to hear from you. Diane and Kelly

This week we will begin a color theme. This will go along with our review and assessments so I can get to know your childs academic level. We will plan to work with a different color each day doing activities that involve vocabulary recognition, literature, art, writing, and even eating a snack. I am asking that the children all try to wear something showing the color each day that we will be working with. Here is a schedule to keep handy to help your child dress wearing the color of the day.

Students will compare/contrast events from the two stories using a venn diagram.

For this activity you will read The Little Red Hen and The Little Red Hen (Makes a Pizza) aloud to your class. Then students will compare and contrast the two stories by cutting out the cards and deciding which story they best describe. Students will LOVE this book about Patrick and the aminal that he finds. Have students predict what aminal they think that Patrick finds. After reading the story and discovering what the aminal really is they will draw a picture and label what the aminal is. For a fun snack on this day we eat animal crackers with green frosting by mixing the primary colors of blue and yellow frosting...which takes us to our next book and activity: Little Blue and Little Yellow with the watercolor activity provided mixing the primary colors.

This is a fun filled day of OPPOSITES! Before reading all of your books about opposites make a list of opposites that the students know. Then read the books and compare and add the new sets of opposites that they learned. They will then illustrate the opposites in their books and add two more of their own.
Read Harry the Dirty Dog and make an opposites day art project to go with the story.
Another fun book to read is Ten Black Dots. We make one black line on each students writing paper with a sharpie and have them create a picture using the black line and write about what they made.
