1) Visual Communication:
In what ways does the visual communication/message of the piece meet the needs of the
brief?
The images I chose and the illustrations I drew clearly convey the various aspects of
bohemianism. From the way it has evolved to how they live their lives and what they stand
for. Even with the layout of the designs, I tried to keep them simple by using negative
space and little writing to demonstrate the simplicity of their lives. The way they don't
plan anything and go against social norms, representing the simplicity of how they tried to
live. Even with the artistic lives they lead, this is reflected in all of the art work used in
the design.
In what ways does the visual communication/message of the piece fail to meet the needs
of the brief?
The audience might not realise that the subject is bohemianism in places where it is
vanishing. Even if the signifiers are evident and intelligible, they might be obvious if you
are familiar with the subculture. However, the viewer should be able to draw links between
the two after reading the word "bohemianism" in the title.
I think the use of imagery are the strongest points. This is where I have really focused on
drawing things in certain ways and adding specific things it to communicate to the
audience.
I could have done more thumbnails In order to think of more ways as to how I could
communicate to the audience. Such as certain aspects about Bohemians.
In what ways could the piece be mis-read or mis-understood by the audience? Be specific
about who the audience is.
The audience is very much art lovers or people who are into art and learning things about
it. The fact that the article isn’t really about art within the subculture but how it’s revived
may confuse the magazines audience.
I would say that it is based on a audience that goes up to around 30-40’s so I’d say that it
doesn’t really connect with an older generation. This being due to the lighter colours and
the way the illustrations are drawn. However, the first double page spread may connect
with them more due to the use of old fashioned photos, which is likely to interest them.
Again I feel like I need to work on time keeping as I have personal things that have been
effecting this. So I need to possibly draw out a schedule that can help me work around
things.
I keeping referring back to the brief, through out the project to make sure that I stayed
on track. With this, I clearly understood what I was asked to do and focused on the visual
communication aspect, which is the main task within this project.
With this project, I feel that the amount of research I undertook was the correct
amount. I tried to do as much as possible in order to really understand how to convey
bohemianism to the audience which helped a lot. Especially as I really needed to
understand in order to create drawings which effectively communicated the visual
communication.
I looked at what seemed to work best within the stuff that had already been made for
creative review. I also looked at how Bohemians lived through photos and articles, doing as
much research about how they lived which allowed me to conclude the most important
aspects which I needed to include.
How did I use evaluations to help with my ideas generation and development?
I looked at other peoples interpretations of my work and how some parts worked best in
different compositions. This helping me to develop the work as as best as possible. As well
as getting advise from people who don’t know as much about bohemianism as I do, giving
them a different outlook on my ways and what in connotes.
How did I use experimentation during the project? How can I make this more effective?
Although I could have experimented more with different ideas, which would have been
very useful, I did experiment with composition. I really focused on how I placed stuff
within the double page spreads and in some cases what fonts I used.
What parts of the project did I enjoy most? Why was this the case?
My favourite part of the project was the illustration and putting together the double page
spreads. Illustration is what I think is my strongest point and I enjoy putting in as much
detail as possible and making it 100% how I want it too look. Regarding actually making the
spreads, I had fun putting them together and connecting them both regarding style and
linking this to bohemianism too.
What parts of the project did I enjoy least? Why was this the case?
Research is what I find the least enjoyable as in some cases it takes to long. Especially
when I have to re-write everything to put it in to my blog. The analysing of the research I
also find hard.
I need to develop my skills on illustrator still as I’m still not that comfortable with it.
Although I can work my way around it, it is taking a lot longer than when I create stuff on
photoshop. I also want to develop my skills on indesign and learn how to use it to it’s full
potential. Even though my designs came out well, everything I did was actually quite simple.
