Evolution and Natural Selection C Notes 2012

The document provides information about natural selection and evolution through a series of examples and explanations: 1) It describes an example of natural selection with green and red beetles, where birds preferentially eat the green beetles, causing the red beetle population to increase over time. 2) It identifies Charles Darwin as the scientist who published The Origin of Species in 1859, introducing the theory of evolution by natural selection. 3) Natural selection is defined as the process by which organisms better adapted to their environment tend to survive and pass on their traits, leading to evolution over many generations.

Title: Natural Section and Evolution

An example of natural selection: red and green chips Activity Summary
There are 2 variations of the beetles, green and red, due to mutation. The birds prefer eating the green beetles. Why? ________________ Over generations the red beetles increase in population because they are not eaten by the birds. More red beetles survive to produce more red offspring. Over time, there are only red beetles in this environment; they have been selected. So what happens to the birds now? __________________________ ________________________________________________________

Who was Charles Darwin?

Charles Darwin was a British scientist. In 1859, he published The Origin of Species. He stated: Stated that all life today evolved from a common ancestor Evolution happens by a process called natural selection.
We did not come from monkeys, we just share a common ancestor.

What is evolution?

It is the change in the inherited traits (passed on from parents to offspring) of a population (species) over many generations. These traits could be: physical (teeth shape) chemical (ability to use sun for energy) behavioral (run fast). This change is caused by beneficial mutations (adaptations) in the genes.

What are some examples of beneficial mutations (adaptations)?

PHYSICAL: This moth mimics an owls eyes

BEHAVIORAL: This monkey is using tools to get food. CHEMICAL: this orchid smells like a female bee

How does evolution work through the process of natural selection?

Natural Selection means survival of the fittest . The environment is selecting what is a beneficial mutation or not Natural selection is the result of four features of living systems: 1) variation differences in the population because of genetic mutation 2) inheritance - parents pass on their genetic mutations to their offspring 3) selection - some organisms reproduce more than others because their mutation makes them the fittest, which means they survive better 4) time happens over time, takes many generations

How does Natural Selection work?

Natural Selection starts with Mutation- caused by random mistake, radiation, or chemicals Bad Mutation Good Mutation(adaptation) - determined by environment

Unable to adapt Organism does not survive Cannot reproduce Extinction occurs

Able to adapt Organism survives Survivors reproduce and pass on traits Overtime the trait becomes more common

Evolution occurs
Natural Selection does not. Why do Giraffes have long necks? Incorrect Model of Evolution .give organisms what they need.

Change through use and disuse (lack of use)

Why doesnt this work?

This doesnt work because: _____________________ _____________________ _____________________ _____________________ _____________________ _____________________ _____________________ _____________________ _____________________ _____________________ _____________________ ____________________
After a long time, all giraffes have long necks = evolution

Natural Selections Explanation

Ancestors had different neck lengths

Through natural selection, longer necks survived and passed on their genes.
