UK human rights boycotts are inconsistent, say MPs
The UK government has been accused of inconsistency in its dealings with other countries over human rights. The Commons Foreign Affairs Committee compared the boycott of the Euro 2012 football championships in Ukraine over human rights, with ministers not taking any action over the Bahrain Grand Prix. It said Bahrain should be on a list of "countries of concern" after the "brutal" suppression of protests. But the Foreign Ofce insisted the UK had a "strong record" on human rights. Britain came under fresh pressure over its diplomatic relations with Bahrain on Tuesday after a group of MPs criticised ministers for taking too lenient an approach towards the kingdoms breaches of human rights. A leading Bahraini rights activist, Mohammed alMaskati, was arrested on Tuesday for taking part in an unauthorized Manama protest, his lawyer and other activists said. Bahraini police arrested prominent Shiite rights activist Mohammed al-Maskati on Tuesday for his participation in anti-government protests, his lawyers said. Maskati was taken to a Manama police station where he was questioned about his role in Friday protests, said his lawyers, who had been present.

They added that he would be referred to the public prosecutor's ofce on Wednesday and could be charged with participating in an "illegal gathering." Saudi Arabia said that all options remained open as it would assess its relations with Britain, a report has claimed. Seven officers charged with prisoner abuse in Bahrain


Seven security ofcers have been charged with torturing detainees in police custody, the head of the public prosecution has said. The ofcers were held after 13 witnesses gave their testimonies, Nawaf Abdullah Hamza, who is also the Head of Special Investigations Unit (SIU) said as he gave an update on the progress of

investigations into allegations of torture and mistreatment by security forces. The statements by the witnesses have led to the questioning and now the charging of the seven, he said on Monday. The ofcial said that the unit has also launched an investigation into two more complaints received in September.
