Halloweens here
Its Halloween Time

Halloween season. The annual Pumpkin Jamboree
Parade is all set for this Saturday, October 27th with
an 11:00 a.m. kick-off. See the ad on page 12. Vinces

tober 27th at 9:00 p.m. There will be live music, a
Halloween costume contest with a great prize, and
lots of fun. See the ad on page 3. Dont forget to visit

will be serving up some ghoulishly, great meals on
Wednesday, October 31st. Stop in and see the beau-
tiful decorations - the Halloween costumed staff is
ready to serve you. See the ad on page 2.
Next weeks NewsHound (November 1st issue) will
contain pictures of the winners of the NewsHounds
frst Pet Halloween Costume Contest. Also look
forward to several Halloween Decorated Homes in
the area. Yes, we know it is one day after the fact - but
hey, we like to extend holidays when at all possible.
Time goes too quickly, so lets enjoy the moments.
Wishing all the children in the area - Happy Trick-
or-Treating. Stay safe! Visit only homes you know.
A gray squirrel on a pumpkin near 52nd and Nor-
dica eyes a photographer warily. Then his hun-
ger overcomes his fear and he dives into a hole he
chewed into the pumpkin---emerging moments later
to savor an autumn treat of seeds and pulp. Some
people thwart the squirrels by pouring lacquer or
other toxins over the pumpkin skin, the homeowner
said. We just cant bring ourselves to do that. By
leaving them as is, we help our local wildlife and get
a lot of enjoyment out of watching them work for
their dinner. Squirrels are fun and fascinating. The
City NewsHound applauds you for your kindness to
the squirrels. (swchicagopost.com photo)
A Halloween treat
The Central Stickney Park Districts autumn day trip
down the historic Lincoln Highway held earlier this
month was truly a big success. The excursion began
in Central Stickney and followed the Father Road
down its history-flled path westward towards Dixon.
Towns along the way that were visited and explored
included DeKalb, Rochelle, Franklin Grove, Ashton,
and Dixon. We had good weather, and a really fun
group of people came along, noted trip tour guide Ed
Kozak. I was so happy that everyone had the chance
to discover and learn about Americas frst coast-to-
coast highway that can be found right here in north-
ern Illinois. I am looking forward to doing it again in
the near future. Pictured: Some of the group posing
in front the famous Egyptian Theatre in DeKalb, IL.

Black Friday
by Stella Schubert
Theres a reason why we mourn
Theres a reason why we grieve,
For something horrid has happened,
That the people cannot believe.
A great man was lost,
A leader of our nation,
On Friday, November 22
nd
,
A victim of assassination.
The mother of his children,
A loving and much loved wife,
Was there on this most fateful day,
To watch the ebbing of his life.
She cradled his head upon her lap,
And lifted her heart in prayer,
That the Lord, our God, in Heaven,
Would but only his life spare.
The reason for this horrid deed,
Has been forever stilled,
For just two days later,
The Assassin himself was killed.
A nation shocked, a nation in grief,
It seemed the whole world cried,
For on Black Friday, November 22
nd
,
Our President has died.

Personal Stats:
I am married and have two children.
What Do You Do For A Living?
I am the owner of SalonBlu Chicago located on
Archer Avenue in Garfield Ridge and have been in
the hairstyling business for over 20 years.
How, Or Why, Did You Choose Your Career?
I knew I wanted to do hair from when I was a young
girl. Ive always had a passion for creating beauty
on others. So I decided to take the course in high
school and immediately loved it and have been do-
ing it ever since!
One Of The Biggest Events In Your Life?
One of the biggest events? I would have to say hav-
ing my two beautiful children.
Best Advice That You Ever Received?
Treat people how you would want to be treated.
Most Unusual Things That Ever Happened?
The most unusual thing that has ever happened
to me has to be the day I was moving into Salon-
Blu Chicago and was unpacking things and to my
surprise there was a fortune cookie in one of the
boxes. I opened it up and my fortune read, You
will follow your dream and prosper. It was very
ironic that that cookie was in there, I did not re-
member eating Chinese food when I was packing
up my things, and I had followed my dream and
was getting the salon ready. I will always keep that
fortune with me!
When Are You Happiest?
Im the happiest when Im with my family. Id also
say Im very happy to see my clients smiling when
they look in the mirror to see their new hair style
and see how great they look!
Who, Or What, Is Your Inspiration?
My parents, as well as my husband, are my inspi-
ration. They have always been there to help me
achieve everything Ive done and have never left
my side.
Any Advice For The Youth Of Today?
I would say to follow your dreams and be willing
to do the work necessary to achieve your goals.
Never give up and youll succeed.
Anything Else To Add?
SalonBlu Chicago has been a great success so far. I
am really enjoying all the wonderful feedback from
clients about how happy they are. I am so excited
people have had the experience only SalonBlu Chi-
cago can give them. I hope to see many more new
faces in the years to come and will always be run-
ning specials in the papers to show my appreciation
for all our clients. Appointments, although not nec-
essary, to have your hair done or nails manicured
can be made by calling 773-229-8136.

with Minnie Mouse for years. I also have a dog
named Pluto.
What Do you Do for a Living?
I am for most the mascot for the Walt Disney Com-
pany.
What Was The Biggest Event In your Life?
I have a few. One would be when I was created in
November 1928 by Walt Disney. Another would
be when my flm Lend A Paw won the award for
best animated short flm. The top biggest would be
when I became the frst cartoon character to have a
star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1978.
When are you The Happiest?
I am the happiest when children are watching my
shows, and coloring pictures of me.
What Is your favorite Part of Halloween?
My favorite part of Halloween is when all the chil-
dren dress up in different characters especially
when they are dressed like me.
What Is The most Embarrassing Thing To Ever
Happen To you?
In my movie Steamboat Willie Pegleg Pete kicked
me down the stairs and I slipped on a bar of soap
which made me fall rear ended in a bucket of wa-
ter. BOY WAS I RED FACED!
What Is your favorite food?
Everyone knows that I love to eat cheese but what
they dont know is during Halloween I love to eat
candy corn. Hey, I am a mouse - so I really like
eating a variety of different foods.
Do you Have anything Else To add?
Yes, I would like to share a few trick and treating
tips with the children: 1. Trick or Treat in a familiar
neighborhood. 2. Always Trick or Treat in a group
accompanied by an adult. 3. Carry a fashlight or
wear a refective costume. 4. Stay on the sidewalks
and away from the streets. 5. Watch your costume
by the open fames of pumpkins. 6. Never enter
a house. 7. Never accept a ride from strangers.
8. Dont approach unfamiliar pets or animals. 9.
Only visit homes that are lit. Never stop at dark
homes. 10. This is the most important: Remember
before you eat any candy have an adult check it for
tampering. I hope that everyone has a great time
this year when they are Trick-or-Treating or hav-
ing fun at a party. I also hope that the weather is
fabulous. Look for me out on the streets - Ill be
around! Everyone stay safe and enjoy!!!

Halloween Night
by Cleatus (Cherokee Lee) Murdaugh
All month I have been waiting
To enjoy a little fright
And I hope its just as scary
As last Halloween Night.
You would not believe the children
Who knocked on our door
Most of them were dressed to kill
Not like the year before
The suits they had were expensive
Like the witch on the broom
She was dressed up like a bride
Wolfman was the groom.
Now they were all different ages
From fve and on up
Most of them had treat bags
One girl had a cup
They began when school let out
And lasted into the night
Not many ventured out in the dark
Staying mostly in the light
Although they came in groups
None came out alone
I saw the parents down the street
Talking on their phone.
The best one that I can remember
Was young and very sweet
She looked at me and rolled her eyes
Then said Twick or Tweet.

YOU ARE
GROWING
UP INTO A
BEAUTIFUL
YOUNG LADY.
WE LOVE
YOU TONS
Autumn may be my fa-
vorite season of the year.
I love Spring and Sum-
mer. But there is some-
thing special about the
Fall. It is a bittersweet
time.
You savor every last
glorious beautiful day be-
cause if you live in Chi-
cago you know whats
coming: another long
Chicago Winter.
I love playing outdoor
gigs and sitting in my
backyard picking and
grinning. But I also like
it when the nights start
getting a little more brisk
and the music moves in-
doors. As a denizen of
the Open Stage scene
for 25 + years I enjoy it
because more musicians
start coming out. The
scene starts getting hot-
ter. There is more vari-
ety of music and styles.
Theres more jamming.
Last week at Vinces
was a case in point. On
recent Thursdays weve
averaged about 3 musical
guests. Last week we had
9. We had our regulars, Al
Geierman and Sue Wind-
ish, who are very enter-
taining both singularly
and collectively. Ken
Nagel who is recovering
nicely from his broken
hand and playing better
than ever. Jackie regaled
us with some Bob Dylan
songs. We had frst-timer
Rhea, a young lady with
a marvelous voice and
some excellent originals.
It was a pleasure seeing
Mia grace our stage after
a long absence, another
very talented young lady.
In that same category of
talented women, Pam
strummed and sang a
few songs for us. Bob
played some outstanding
instrumental jazz guitar.
And Travis gave us some
scary Halloween accordi-
on to round out the eve-
ning.
Maybe now that the
music is moving indoors
well see more of our
semi-regulars. Some ex-
cellent talents like John-
ny T., Harry Harrison,
Mike Schumaker, Kurt,
Mitch Mayer, Bruce
Foster, Darren Mulligan,
Dolly & Dave, Domi-
nique, Tony & Victoria,
Kevin Duffy, Eddie Con-
lan, John Devlin, and our
buddy Mike Adams who
has been missing in ac-
tion lately.
Id like to thank all the
City NewsHound and
Journal News readers
who have been coming
to my recent gigs and
Vinces Open Stage. If
you come out, please
introduce yourself. I al-
ways enjoy meeting you.
Rock on! And support
your local music store.

Last weekend, over 200
walkers came out in the
wind and rain to show
their support in the fght
against breast cancer
during Mercy Hospitals
Annual Walk for Life.
In its seventh year, the
event has grown to be-
come an annual tradition
for many, bringing old
and new friends together,
sharing their stories and
experiences with one an-
other and raising money
for a great cause.
This year they raised
more than $17,000 to
support the Comprehen-
sive Breast and Wom-
ens Health Care Cen-
ter, which will be used
towards screenings for
individuals who may not
otherwise have access to
quality screenings. The
walk is not only about
raising money to fund
screening for those who
otherwise could not af-
ford it, but its also a
chance for us to raise
awareness and educate
the community about
the importance of annual
mammograms, said Ei-
leen Knightly, RN, di-
rector of the Breast and
Womens Healthcare
Center.
In 2002, when the Cen-
ter frst opened, over
7,600 women received
mammograms. In 2011,
more than 16,550 women
received screening mam-
mograms at our Breast
and Womens Health
Care Center, a 118% in-
crease in the amount of
screening mammograms.
Mercy offers complete
state-of-the-art digital
mammography and di-
agnostic facilities to en-
sure that women receive
the best in quality breast
screening and treatment.
Appointments are usu-
ally available within a
few days and same day
appointments are often
available.
