Tuesday is Election Day throughout the
country. It is what we in the media call an
off-year election, meaning most of the
races and issues are extremely local. But
that is where good government begins. So
get out and vote. If you dont, and things
dont go the way you would like to see
them go, you have only yourself to blame.

Tell Tales
Christmas at The Beacon
BY JASMINE CUPP
Its tting that Christmas lights are being hung around
our town. With the warmth and love for Devin Kohlman
that everyone is giving, it really does feel like the magic
of Christmas in Port Clinton. On Monday, Oct. 28, at 11
a.m., dubbed 11 for Devin, residents, well-wishers, city
workers, business owners and others gathered at Adams
Street Park to decorate the gazebo with Christmas deco-
rations for Devin. Alejandro Hondo Zapata had a big
hand in promoting updates on Facebook on Devins con-
dition and any events that benet Devin, his mom Alexis
and his family. Zapata, who is a local DJ with many con-
nections to people around Port Clinton and the Port Clin-
ton area and who was also Devins baseball coach, was a
perfect candidate to broadcast the updates. I just want
to help out anyway possible. Ive known Alexis since we
were little kids. Ive lost my dad, my mom, and Johnny B;
people ask me how I deal with it. I pray. Thats what Devin
needs right now is our prayers and support, said Zapata.
When entering Alexis apartment on Second Street, there
are signs for Devin all over the apartment that his friends
have made showing support for him and his journey. The
Christmas tree was lit and decorated, lights were strung on
the wall and a big group of
Devins friends were there
by his side. Devin seemed
very happy to be with his
family and his friends sur-
rounded by the warmth of
the Christmas decorations.
Alexis said that after a
nap, she was going to turn
Devins bed toward the
window so he could see the
progress of the decorat-
ing at Adams Street Park.
I just want to thank the
whole community. There
are no words to express my
gratitude and appreciation
for everything everyone
has done. I feel that I was
already lucky enough by
just having Devin being a
part of my life. I am hon-
ored to be his mom, said
Alexis.
At 5:30 p.m. 93 red and black balloons were released in
honor of Devin. 93 was his football number. There was
also a gathering at Adams Street Park with hot chocolate,
cookies and Christmas carols. Devin had a great Christ-
mas Monday night. Heres to hoping he gets every kids
dream and has two Christmases this year.
To show support for Devin, Port Clinton residents are
asked to put out Christmas decorations early, and well-
wishers from near and far are asked to send Christmas
cards to Devin Kohlman, 217 E. Second Street, Port Clin-
ton, OH, 43452.
Benets for Devin
Devins Dreams will be held on Thursday, Oct. 31, at
Lock Dock and Barrel located at 124 Buckeye Blvd. The
fundraiser will begin at 2 p.m, with food, rafes and fun.
Friday, Nov. 1, at the last Port Clinton home football
game the cheerleaders and DECA members will be do-
ing a Dash for Cash at halftime to benet Devin and his
family. Three minutes will be put on the game clock and
cheerleaders and DECA members will be rushing up and
down the aisles collecting as much money as they can in
the three minutes.
To make donations to help Devin and him mom, Alexis,
contact US Bank to donate to a trust that is set up espe-
cially for the family. For the Port Clinton US Bank Branch,
which is located at 142 E. Second Street, call 419-734-2145.

Late Sunday night the police department, re depart-
ment, and citizens of Port Clinton gathered to welcome
home Devin Kohlman, a Port Clinton Middle School stu-
dent who has been battling metastatic medulloblastoma,
an aggressive form of brain cancer.
Operation Bright and Loud started with Devins arrival
at the Erie-Ottawa Regional Airport and continued to
Perry Street, turned down Madison Street and ended on
Second Street in front of Devin and Alexis (Devins moth-
er) Kohlmans house. 20 service vehicles and a hundred
cars were in the parade escorting and welcoming Devin
and his family home.
Friends and family of Devin are asking the communi-
ty and businesses to Decorate for Devin, to put up their
Christmas decorations early to show support for Devin
and give him a great early Christmas.

Ottawa County candidates for Nov. 5 election
Ottawa County has many contested races
in the Nov. 5 election. The Beacon asked
the candidates that we were able to con-
tact and that responded to our request to
submit the reasons they would be the best
ofceholder.
Port Clinton Auditor
COLE HATFIELD
I am running for
Port Clinton Auditor
to use my business
knowledge and expe-
rience in order to give
back to the commu-
nity that has given me
so many opportuni-
ties. As the owner of
the Port Clinton
based TDH Enter-
prises, Inc. and as the current Port Clinton
Auditor, I know how to keep Port Clinton
moving forward.
I feel that I am the best candidate to con-
tinue my position as Port Clinton City Au-
ditor due to my dedication, my experience,
and my integrity.
Dedication-As a lifelong Port Clinton
resident, I am committed to giving back
to the community that has given so much
to me. I believe in the investment in Port
Clintons future and will continue to see
grant opportunities and nd ways to save.
Experience-As the current Port Clin-
ton City Auditor, prior Finance Commit-
tee Chairman, and local business owner,
I have over ten years of accounting and
business experience.
Integrity-I am committed to continu-
ing the Port Clinton Auditors tradition of
transparent and open business practices.
As Auditor, I will ensure that funds are
used effectively; and I will remain honest,
trustworthy, and show how much I care
for the future of Port Clinton.

BERT FALL
Im Bert Fall and I
am running for Audi-
tor of the City of Port
Clinton. My wife, Ra-
chel, and I are both
lifelong residents of
this community and
have a vested inter-
est in the prosperity
of this area. We live
here, we work here,
we are raising our
three children here. I have been a long
time proponent of nancial responsibility
and efcient use of public funds. All funds
used by local governments belong to the
the people and they are to be used respon-
sibly in order to provide the most amount
of services for the lowest cost. In order to
provide that, a detailed audit of the citys
nances is needed on a constant basis so
that wasteful spending can be identied
and presented to City Council. I am a scal
conservative who believes that the role of
city government is to provide essential ser-
vices and to do so without burdening the
people with excessive fees and higher tax
rates. Port Clinton is a great city and has
the potential to be even better. As a vet-
eran of Operation Iraqi Freedom I served
my country, as City Auditor I would like to
serve the people of Port Clinton.

I work full time

our family business,

years. Before I came

I was a paramedic/
reghter for Port
Clinton and the manager for North Cen-
tral EMS. I am a member of Kiwanis and
on the Board of Directors. I am also on the
Board of Directors for Ruth Anns House.
I bring management skills and a busi-
ness background to City Council. Im not
afraid to ask the hard questions.

MARK COPPELER
My name is Mark
Coppeler and Im
running for re-elec-
tion in Ward 2 for
Port Clinton City
Council.
I am the only Ward
councilman running
for a second term
and experience mat-
ters. It takes time to
understand how things work and continu-
ity is important. Ive worked hard for Port
Clinton. I have been a committee member
of all six committees and have been Infra-
structure Chairman and currently I am Fi-
nance Committee Chairman.
Ive been willing to work with others and
have sought out individuals with greater
experience to give guidance on projects.
Through hard work and determination I
found a grant opportunity that will allow
the City to install sidewalks along Lake-
shore Drive.
Im not willing to just settle without
asking questions or looking at other pos-
sibilities and I will not just be a yes man
who blindly accepts things at face value
without digging further to see if some-
thing deserves a yes.
If you want someone that will do his re-
search, ask questions, is willing to look to
other sources for answers and wants whats
best for our City and its residents, I am
that person.
I look forward to your vote on Novem-
ber 5th.

JERRY TAROLLI
As a retiree I have
the time and energy
to devote to the busi-
ness of helping Port
Clinton become the
viable and aspiring
town that we all know
that we can become.
I believe we have a
great opportunity in
front of us to make
Port Clinton an inte-
gral part of the tourist
industry and not just a stepping stone to
our neighboring communities.
I have lived here my whole life, seen the
best and worst of our great town, but I
believe we are within reach of being great
again. We just have to work together to
achieve what is at our doorstep.
I would like to see our city cemeteries
put on a higher priority. I am not by any
means taking anything away from our city
employees. They are doing an exceptional
job with the funds and help they have to
work with, but I believe with some ingenu-
ity and tweaking of the budget we can get
the cemeteries back to the way they need
to be to make our citizens proud of them.
I ask the citizens of Port Clinton Ward
2 to give me the chance to serve them
proudly and vote for me on November 5th.
Port Clinton City Council
Ward 3 A
MARGARETT PHILLIPS
City Councils task is to
help the City move forward.
First, street repair and sewer
upgrading must continue.
The city will look
inviting once these
are completed. Sec-
ond, buildings in
the downtown area
need much exterior
work. Once a few of
the buildings are re-
habbed others should
follow by example.
Third, somehow, the
downtown area and
Waterworks Park should be united in
some way. Presently, they are two distinct
entities. We need to appear as one city, not
two. And fourth, as to Waterworks Park
development, I feel that teamwork will en-
sure that people will see both development
occurring and park greenery kept. The
City will prosper. he key is compromise
and collaboration. These four encompass-
ing items are necessary and will take years
to achieve as they must be completed with
great thought in mind. Hopefully, every-
one can be happy with most of the nal
results, if not all. We will live with the
changes for a very long time. Port Clinton
again will look like a progressive city. I
would like the opportunity to help the City
move forward. I am willing to spend the
time and energy serving the people of Port
Clinton to achieve this.

TRISH MCCARTNEY
Port Clinton voters
have two solid can-
didates to represent
them for Ward 3 on
city council this elec-
tion. What distin-
guishes me is that
Ive owned and oper-
ated a successful small
business for 15 years.
I am used to working
in a team environ-
ment, setting goals
and achieving positive results. I work in an
industry that requires me to ask questions
and listen closely to my customers; only by
asking the right questions and really lis-
tening am I able to make the appropriate
recommendations. I have served several
non-prot organizations as well, both in
executive positions and as a board mem-
ber. This experience makes me the best
candidate to represent Ward 3 because I
have the professional skills and proven ex-
perience to work through complex issues
and offer comprehensive solutions. I am
personally and professionally committed
to the success of our community!
Bay Township Trustee
(Vote for 2)
JERRY BLATT
I am Jerry Blatt and I am running for Bay
Township Trustee. The reason I am run-
ning and why I think I am the best can-
didate for the job is instead of sitting back
complaining about government I decided
to get involved and try to make a differ-
ence. I own my own business for the last
25 years in Port Clinton so I have the abil-
ity to work around the needs of the town-
ship. Being in business has also taught me
how to work within a budget and work
with people to solve issues that arise. Also
I am the only one with former trustee ex-
perience so I can step into the job knowing
how the government runs. Thank you for
your support.

MEL MCCORD
I, Mel McCord, seek this ofce to serve
the people and the needs of Bay Town-
ship. My cost conscious management
skills, maintenance skills, and persistent
problem solving skills will be an asset to
this ofce and the
townships economic
future. My family and
I are a proud part of
this community. I am
here to be the voice of
the people. Not only
to listen, but to take
action with the con-
cerns of our residents

community strong. Through my involve-
ment in our familys grain, hay, and cattle
farming operation, I also know and under-
stand what it takes to keep a business mov-
ing forward and nancially sound, and I
plan to continue applying those same val-
ues and principles used in my family and
on the farm to my work in Benton Town-
ship. I have already helped with the writ-
ing and submission of several grant appli-
cations for the township, and will continue
seeking opportunities for grants and other
programs that could make a positive im-
pact on not only the township nancial
statements, but the township as a whole.
One of my areas of focus should I be re-
elected will be to continue road upgrad-
ing and drainage work for our residents.
Through careful budgeting and planning,
we have been able to update much of our
outdated equipment during my time in
ofce, while still managing to maintain
a sizeable nancial carry-over each year.
This has been very difcult to do with re-
cent state government funding cuts and
unfunded mandates, but with great team-
work by your trustees and scal ofcer, we
have persevered and I hope to continue be-
ing a part of a great team providing great
services to Benton Township. I would like
to thank all residents for their past sup-
port, and ask for your vote on November 5.

Danbury Township
(Vote For 2)
CHARLES SCOTT
I would like to begin
by asking the support
of the voters of Dan-
bury Township for
the re and ems levy
issue. This levy will
give the ability to the
township to provide
24-7 EMS coverage
and continue the ex-
cellent re protec-
tion we have come to
know. Please vote for this important levy.
During election times we often hear
words like honesty, integrity and hard
work and candidates often try to associate
their ideas with these words. I will attempt
to dene these three words as they relate to
my rst term as a township trustee.
Honesty has been demonstrated by my
ability to say, I dont know the answer to
that question, but I will nd out and get
back with you when I do.
Integrity has been demonstrated in my
ability to always vote and act in the best
interest of Danbury Township. It is often
easier to vote the way of the squeaky wheel,
but not always the correct way.
Hard work has been demonstrated in my
ability to do the job I have been elected to
do without regard to getting my name or
picture in the news. It is doing the things
few are even aware done with the same
dedication as the very public acts.
The voters of this township have an op-
portunity to change the way business is
done this election. I would like to ask for
your vote on election day.

Englebeck was a

a previous township
trustee, he along with
the other trustees worked together on nu-
merous projects including brush drop-off,
Meadowbrook acquisitions, enhance-
ments at Lake Point Park and Battleeld
Park, signage, athletic eld updates and
new vehicles for the police and road de-
partments.
Englebeck said When elected I would
like to continue maintaining our com-
munity assets and assist with planning for
future accomplishments. I believe positive
thoughts and actions to provide goods
and services for our local community, our
township employees and our tourist com-
munity are the grassroots of our govern-

My wife Dawn and I have three daughters,

Marblehead VFW Mens Auxiliary, and
Port Clinton Elks.
I have been on the Danbury School Board
for twelve years and president for the past
two. I have served on audit/nance, leader-
ship, policy and facility committees.
I am seeking this ofce because I want to
continue to contribute to this community
where I live and have raised my family. My
goals are to maintain customer service to
our residents, improve services and ame-
nities as needed, nd ways to attract busi-
ness, jobs and housing, while maintaining
a balance of future growth and develop-

I believe that I have the work ethic, ex-

you owe it to yourself
and your township to
hire the best, most
capable person. We,
the residents of Har-

very fortunate in so
many ways. My goal,
as your Trustee, is to capitalize on the
good things we share and enjoy while nd-
ing viable solutions to any problems that
may arise. Now, Why am I certain of
this? Four very good candidates are vying
for two seats in this election. Of the four,
I have the best, most func-
tional combination of expe-
rience and ability to put to
work for Harris Township.
As a 30+ year resident of

humbled by these offers, Im going to turn
them all down. I dont feel comfortable
taking contributions; in fact, I think these
contributions are a big part of whats cur-

landscape! If I took a contribution from
one person, or from 20 people, whether
they meant me to or not, I could feel be-
holden to them, and that wouldnt be fair
to the electorate as a whole.

The so-called experts
are simply misinformed!
Newspapers are dead?
Over the last 15 years, since the proliferations of the internet, paid circulation
newspapers have seen their subscriptions drop dramatically, up to 8% per year. That
is why you hear Newspapers are dead. Thats the bad news. The good news is
FREE community papers, like The Beacon, have had ZERO reduction in circulation
and readership! Our latest audit shows that nearly 80% of the households who get
The Beacon READ The Beacon. PLUS The Beacon is read by over 2 individuals per
household. So, while the daily papers have suffered, the FREE communities weeklies
like The Beacon have thrived. And better yet The Beacons Web Site just gets better
and better, updated every day with new community news items. The Beacon was
Hyper-Local before the term was coined!
So, when you hear Newspapers are dead ... dont believe it! Community papers are
alive and well, thank you! And our Web Sites are great as well because we dont have
to worry about losing readership to our own Web Site. All you have to do is sit back
and read your weekly Beacon and stay informed about the good news happening
every day.

Super heroes, fairy princesses, goblins, skeletons, clowns, witches, pirates,
vampires and a variety of other creatures descended upon Edgewood as
the afternoons festivities began. Residents sat in their doorways holding
pumpkin buckets overowing with candy as trick or treaters went up and
down the halls gathering their bounty. As the costumed characters passed
by each person, two or three special goodies were dropped into their con-
tainers. Excitement owed from the children as they lled their bags while
the residents smiled with delight at each little ones outt. The children
were so cute, said Pauline Deming, a facility resident. It was fun passing
out the candy and seeing all the kids. After completing the circle through
the halls, donuts and sweet apple cider awaited each participant in the liv-
ing room. As the event came to a close, three lucky children won prizes for
best costumes. Three top prizes were awarded for costumes. First place
this year was McKenna Sullivan, the candy fairy. Second place went to
Alexia and Brendan Luzader. Third Prize went to Angelina Milonov. A
special thank you to all who participated and donated candy for the event.
Edgewood Manor
hosts Trick or Treat
Sunday evening the 13th Annual Riverview Healthcare
Campus Trick or Treat was held. Hundreds of children
trick or treated from the hundred residents at Riverview,
enjoyed trick or treat story time and movies, visited the
haunted basement that beneted the Relay For Life Team
and made special Halloween greetings for residents. There
was a pumpkin carving contest with proceeds benetting
Riverview nurse Sarah Williams run in St. Jude Hospitals
Glass Slipper Run.
The Riverview Auxiliary and other generous donors
made possible the evening that brought smiles to the chil-
dren, families, staff and residents and brightened the halls
of Riverview.

LSW, Alzheimers Association, Northwest
Ohio Chapter. Conley will also discuss
the spirituality of caregivers, as well as
others who are ministering to the person

sentation is to help pastors and lay leaders
understand what God means to a person
with dementia. Some of those perceptions
of God include: God walks with me; God
is my guide; God punishes me for doing
wrong; God as father; and others. The pre-
sentation includes an overview of demen-
tia and how to better nurture the faith of a
person with dementia and the caregivers.

In their contest against the 11th-ranked
team in Division III, Port Clinton was re-
minded just how difcult life is in the San-
dusky Bay Conference.
Last Friday, the Clyde Fliers defeated the
Redskins, 61-14, behind a balanced offense
that accumulated just over 400 total yards.
Clyde, which improved to 8-1 and 5-1
in the SBC with the win, scored 26 and 21
points, respectively, in the rst two quar-
ters to take a 47-7 lead into the half.
Flier quarterback Tim Hoppe scored
the games rst touchdown on an 8-yard
run before Nathan Stubbleeld tied it at
with a 99-yard kickoff return for a touch-
down. (The kickoff return tied a state re-
cord.)
Clyde responded, scoring three more
touchdowns in the rst half to take a 26-7
before adding three more touchdowns in
the second period.
Flier running back Damien Coburn car-
ried the ball seven times for 183 yards and
four touchdowns and Hoppe connected
on 7-of-12 passes for 163 yards and a
score. Hoppe also scored a rushing touch-
down, running it in from eight yards out
for the games rst score.
Derek Gray led the Fliers with two catch-
es for 67 yards, Blake Miller had one catch
for 40 yards and returned a punt 47 yards
for a touchdown and Colin Rieman had
two receptions for 25 yards and a score.
Port Clinton, meanwhile, which dropped
to 0-9 overall and 0-6 in the league, got 73
rushing yards from running back Tristan
Mallory and 56 from quarterback Bran-
don Moore. Moore also completed 13-of-
19 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown.
Aidan Rospert caught ve passes for 43
yards and a score and Stubbleeld had
three catches for 24 yards.

Unfortunately, Danbury
has run into two teams in
each of the last few weeks
that are playing some of
their best football of the
year.
Facing a Gibsonburg unit
that put up 64 points in its
previous game, the Lakers
fell, 63-21, to the Golden
Bears to drop to 2-7 and 1-5
in the Toledo Area Athletic
Conference. Gibsonburg,
meanwhile, has won three of its last four games and is now
5-4 and 4-2 in the TAAC.
The Bears dominated throughout, scoring 28 points in
the rst quarter before taking a 49-7 lead. Quarterback
Matt Tille connected on 8-of-16 passes for 208 yards, ve
touchdowns and an interception.
The Lakers only rst-half touchdown came on a 45 yard
pass from Seth Vargo to Cody German. Vargo, who n-
ished 6-of-18 for 86 yards and two touchdowns and two
interceptions, connected with Jimmy Chamberlain on a
27-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter to round out the
scoring. German, a running back, carried the ball 17 times
for 118 yards and had a 75-yard touchdown run, and
caught two passes for 48 yards and a touchdown. Cham-
berlain had two catches for 28 yards and a score.
With one week remaining in the 2013 season, the Dan-
bury Lakers have the chance to do one of two things:
(1) build some momentum for the offseason; or (2) lose
another game that will likely put a damper on season in
which Danbury was expected to win 4-6 games.
This Friday, the Lakers host the Hilltop Cadets in the
season nale. Hilltop, like Danbury, is 2-7 and 1-5 in the
TAAC. Last season, the Cadets edged the Lakers, 26-22.
Danbury loses to Gibsonburg, prepares for Hilltop

Perkins departed Friday nights game at Oak Harbor
with a 48-28 victory over the Rockets, but it was a well-
earned, hard-fought win that the Pirates are happy to have
after being tested.
Oak Harbor (4-5, 3-3 SBC) scored on its rst two pos-
sessions to take a 7-0 and 14-7 leads, respectively, in the
rst quarter before the Pirates rallied to take the lead for
good at 21-14 on a 64-yard scamper by running back Dale
Irby with 9:28 remaining in the rst half. Perkins (9-0,
6-0) pushed the lead to 41-14 after scoring three touch-
downs in the third quarter, though the Rockets did ght
back to make it interesting.
Irby turned out to be the difference in the game, rush-
ing 18 times for 276 yards and three scores (57, 64, 4) and
giving the Oak Harbor defense ts with his speed and
quickness. As a team, the Pirates carried the ball 49 times
for 419 yards and nished with 451 yards of total offense.
John Workman helped to pace the Perkins offense with 12
carries for 57 yards and two scores.
With the win, the Pirates clinched at least a share of their
second consecutive Sandusky Bay Conference title.
First off, I just want to say that Coach May and his staff
and his players fought hard tonight, Perkins head coach
Jason Ziegler said. It was a heavyweight ghttheir kids
battled and our kids battled. Their guys fought, and I
knew it was going to be a battle. We made some mistakes,
but when it mattered most, our guys stepped up. Our de-
fense played well at times and we were able to hold them.
In the third quarter, the Pirates took control, driving 55
yards in four plays on the opening drive of the second half
before scoring on a 3-yard run by Workman. Two plays
later, Perkins defense back Vince Scavio intercepted a pass
at the Oak Harbor 26-yard-line to set his team up for
another score. The Pirates drove 26 yards in eight plays,
converting two thirds downs along the way before Trevon
Moore scored from three yards out. And Adam Snyders
6-yard touchdown run with 1:06 remaining in the period
made it 41-14.
But Oak Harbor stormed back, scoring on the next play
from scrimmage when sophomore Andrew Heberling ran
it in from 72 yards out. On the play, he darted to his right,
and burst through the hole made by his offensive line be-
fore utilizing his speed to outrun the Perkins defenders
for the score.
After the Rockets recovered a fumble, Ben Genzman
scored from 42 yards out to cut the decit to 41-28. Oak
Harbor then managed to recover an onside kick, but it was
nullied because it was grabbed out of the air before it
had a chance to touch the ground, a violation of high-
school rules.
The Pirates then put the game away, driving 43 yards
in eight plays before Irbys 4-yard-run with 6:58 put the
game away.
Heberling gave the Perkins defense ts all night, run-
ning 13 times for 111 yards and two touchdowns. Gen-
zman had 18 carries for 96 yards and two scores and Cole
Weirich had 11 carries for 52 yards before leaving with an
injury.
Overall, I was proud of our kids, said Oak Harbor head
coach Mike May. They came out and battled and fought
hard. We battled for four quarters.
I think our offensive line played really well. Heberling is
capable of making plays for us and Ben Geznman ran well,
too. But Im just really proud of our kids.

Tuesday evening the park-
ing lots at The Moose Lodge
on Lakeshore Drive were
full, as were the bellies of
many of those leaving the
4th annual Port Clinton
Rotary Pizza Challenge. 528
adults and 53 children sam-
pled pizza from ten area res-
taurants and voted on their
favorites.
Duane Waite, coordinator
of the event, said that the
Pizza Challenge was begun
four years ago after he and
his brother John enjoyed
Sandusky Rotary s Pizza
Challenge and realized that
it could work in Port Clin-
ton. This is the second year
it has been held at the Moose
Lodge. Proceeds go to Rota-
rys scholarship fund for lo-
cal students.
The price is right and the
vendors take the competi-
tion very seriously, said
Waite. He noted that many
people seemed to stay for
an hour or so, enjoying the
variety of pizza and visit-
ing with family and friends.
Throughout the three hour
event, fresh and varied piz-
zas were continuously being
delivered. The average is
of a pizza consumed per
person, said Waite.
A panel of high school stu-
dents judged the best Pep-
peroni Pizza category, won
by Sloopys Sports Cafe in
Lakeside.
The specialty pizza cat-
egory was judged by a panel
of Port Clinton Auditor Cole
Hateld, Schaffner Publica-
tions owner John Schaffner,
Port Clinton Middle School
Principal Carrie Sanchez,
Salvation Army Director
Maureen Saponari and WP-
CRs Bert Fall. The winner
was Papa Jimmies BBQ and
Pizza of Port Clinton, whose
prize-winning specialty piz-
za featured peaches, BBQ
chicken and bourbon sauce.
The peoples choice win-
ner was also Papa Jimmies,
with second place going to
Sloopys and third place to
Brunos of Marblehead.

R. C. Waters Elementary School was recognized and
honored recently by the Ohio Department of Education
as one of 141 Schools of Promise in the State of Ohio.
R.C. Waters Elementary School was the only school in Ot-
tawa County that earned this distinction, and with more
than 4,100 schools in the state, the honor has been very
well received by the Benton-Carroll-Salem Schools com-
munity.
The Ohio Department of Education developed the
School of Promise program to identify, recognize, and
highlight schools that are making substantial progress in
ensuring high achievement for all students. State Super-
intendent of Public Instruction Dr. Richard Ross com-
mented that, Schools of Promise are examples of what
can happen when principals, teachers, parents, and com-
munity members all believe that children can learn. These
schools overcome challenges, sometimes signicant chal-
lenges, to provide high-quality education to Ohio chil-
dren.
All public elementary and secondary schools in Ohio
who serve a student population with 40 percent or more
economically disadvantaged students (students on free/
reduced lunch) were eligible to be selected as a School
of Promise. To be selected as a School of Promise, the
all students, and students in the economically disad-
vantaged sub group had to earn a 75% or greater pro-
ciency rate on state assessments during the 2012-2013
school year. Further, the school had to earn an A or B on
the Annual Measurable Objective and Progress Grade
measures on 2012-2013 the local report card.
Principal Karen Gruber and the staff of R.C. Waters Ele-
mentary earned commendations from the B-C-S Board of
Education at their October 22nd for achieving the School
of Promise distinction. Upon accepting the commenda-
tions, Mrs. Gruber commented that the School of Prom-
ise distinction can be attributed to the hard-working and
dedicated staff in her building.

pal Mrs. Karen Gruber being presented with commen-
dations for earning the School of Promise distinction

22nd Board of Education meeting.
Grade 1 students in Mrs. Christie
Millers classroom at Bataan Memo-
rial Primary Elementary completed
research on pumpkins. Children
worked in small groups with the help
of parent volunteers to measure, weigh
and count. After parents cut open the
pumpkins the real fun began. Students
scooped out the seeds and counted
by groups of tens. More pictures and
video can be seen at www.pccsd.net or
the Port Clinton City School District
Facebook page. Mrs. Miller said the
lesson was made possible by the parent
volunteers and donation of pumpkins
by Jasons Pumpkin Patch.

ance and answer questions regarding child
development. Participants
will be assessed in the areas
of hearing, vision, gross &
ne motor skills, concept
development and speech &
language development. Pre-
registration is necessary. For
those wishing to be assessed

ICS offers after school Art Club
Joni Hoffman, the art teacher at Im-
maculate Conception School, inspires
her students to love art so much that
they want to come back after school
and create. And create is what they
do. Immaculate Conception School
held its rst meeting/work session of
the all new Art Club this past Wednes-
day afternoon. The art club is made
up of students in grades 2, 3, 4, and
5 and will meet once a month in the
schools art room. Each monthly
meeting will explore a new era, style,
or artistic idea. Octobers class fea-
tured crafts made with duct tape. The
students were encouraged to make
whatever they wished out of the util-
ity tape that comes in a variety of fun
colors and prints. Alyssa Diaz made a
mask of Medusa. Madison Weichman,
Paige Reineck, and Ella Roberts chose
to fashionably cover the letters in their
initials. Savannah Nyang even covered
a small lamp with the colorful tape.
The imaginations in the ICS Art Club
are sure to soar and take their curiosity
and creativity to new levels throughout
this school year.
