Here is an example of a discussion text for debate that you apply the rules you have learnt above. Pay attention to steps presented in the following discussion text. Chairman: We are having a debate activity. The speakers from the affirmative team are Zaky, Reny and Oky and from the negative one are Okto, Nova and Reno. Now our topic is that the continuing our study at the university out of town is better than at our home town. Zaky: When you continue your study out of town, you will have a change. You will have a new situation, new people and new spirit, of course. Okto: I disagree with you. Why? If you wanted a change, you would get it in the new place where you continue your study after senior high school. So it wont be necessary to continue study out of town. Reny, No, I cant accept your opinion. Being away from parents, teenagers like us can learn how to be an independent person. You should wash your own clothes and iron them by yourselves. Continuing your study out of town can lead you to be a more responsible person. Nova: Yes, you probably can learn how to be an independent person at your parents at home. However, by living away from your parents, your family will spend more money. It means that continuing study at your hometown make you more economical. Oky: Well, I think thats not quite true? Why? When you live apart from your parent, you control the money by yourself, dont you? You become even more appreciative in spending your money. You will be wiser with the money. Reno: Okay then, many people believe that being away from parents can be very risky. Because there is no control from their parents, many teenagers join the dangerous activities like drink and narcotics, etc. Chairperson: Finally, I have to sum up. Continuing studying out of town can be beneficial, namely, improving your personality and life skills. 4. Presentation After studying part 1,2 and 3, now, you work together to do the following task: First, the class is divided into two groups (A and B). Each group is divided into two sub-groups (A1, A2. B1 and B2) Then, Group A 1 and 2 are affirmative sub-groups. So, B1and B2 are negative sub-groups And Group A1 will debate against B1 and A2 against B2 Next, decide the topic then analyze it to make the debate plan. After that, Develop the debate plan into text of discussion for debate.
