I HAVE A TENDENCY
to exaggerate. And I HAVE A TENDENCYto get a tad overexcited. IRRATIONALLY EXCITED, some may say. (Note the capitalization.) BUT WHEN IT COMES TO THE ULTIMATE EPICNESS THAT IS SXSW, THERE IS NO WAY THAT I COULD AT ALL EXAGGERATE OR BECOME OVEREXCITED. Because, pure and simple, that shit is gonna be reeeeeal. So THAT is why weve so aptly dubbed March the MUSIC ISSUE. Because if youre not jaunting off to bong beers beachside with board-shorted bros and bikini-clad babes (which, it should be noted, is possibly the second best scenario innnn the world) Me and George and you decide to stick around the ATX for the Worst-dressed, my ass week, youre gonna be in for some seriously sick sound. ERGO, weve packed this issue with everything you need to know for this magical week of music mayhem. Tear out our ultimate SXSW survival toola map packed with guides to FREE PARTIES with FREE FOOD and FREE BOOZE. So, ya know, if you're as broke as I may or may not definitely be, you'll still be able to rage all week fo' cheap. Its also handy if, you know, youre hanging out at 4th and Lavaca and suddenly need to haul ass to 6th and Colorado. BECAUSE ARE YOU SUPPOSED TO GO EAST OR WEST?! NORTH OR SOUTH?! WHY CANT YOU EVER REMEMBER THAT!? And, naturally, weve also got profiles on badass bands youve gotta check outfrom Fitz and the Tantrums to two of Austins own awesome bands, Quiet Company and The Eastern Sea, and more. Finalllyyyy, were answering one of lifes ultimate, everlasting questions (no, not What would Jesus do?), What should I wear?, with some stylish ensembles for your music festival fashion. Because the last thing you want to do is land on a SXSW worstdressed list...like, maybeBuzzFeedsin, say, 2012 Whatever. Psh, I dont care what they saytop hats are totalllllly stylish.

The date went well! We have a mutual friend who is in LHB and is my little in APO, which was how we found out that we were both seeing people by the time the contest was published. While his was more official, it was strange for us both at first, but after we ordered dinner and beers it was just like hanging out with a cool friend! He is doing the sports journalism program and thats something that I have thought about doing, and we talked about that field for a while and then raved about Blaire Lunas 14-strikeout no-hitter the week previous. We knew going into it that it wasnt going to go anywhere, but once we got past our Spurs-Mavs rival issue, we had a good time just hanging out!
I had a great time. We just got to know each other over a delicious California pizza and some Shiner. We mostly talked about sports and our personal history of how we ended up at UT, and the night flew by. Not quite my type, but definitely somebody I would like to hang out with again.
LASER TAG
ARCADE
SKY TRAIL
Its comfortable and concerts are usually hot. Its not something youll get sweaty in. Its cute with the necklace. The fringe is also something fun and different.
This outfit to me is the epitome of summer chic. Everything from the collared shirt to the chambray shorts to the comfy shoes, its all about effortless cool.
HOT HIPPIE

Love blue, and stripes make you look more muscular/fit than you actually are. I grew up on the coast so Im most comfortable with the least amount of clothing.
SIMPLE SWAG
The dress is cute, but casual. It serves its purpose for a concert, but its still nice for a day out.
Natasha Sharma, 21 Hometown: Austin Major: Social Work & International Relations
SXSW STYLE!
I love the sequins. The one-arm sleeve makes it elegant. If you want to go more glamorous for a concert, its still comfortable.
SASSY SPARKLE
DARINGLY DIFFERENT
If I get the chance to wear things that draw attention to myself, then I will. This harness pushes the boundaries and the looks I get from people while wearing it are hilarious. I tried to remove a lot of the sexual elements by layering it over an outfit that covers my full body.
I like the color contrast, and the use of bold colors goes with the theme of SXSW. The leather gives it an edgy vibe.
I love the jacket and boots combo. Ill wear them separately or together and I always feel like a badass. This is one of my favorite shirts, and Im obsessed with plaid.

TOTAL FRAT MOVE
Percila Richardson
Age: 19 Height: 58 School: University of Georgia Major: Psychology Relationship Status: Single One thing that impresses you when youre out on a date? When they have a good sense of humor and can constantly keep me laughing. Whats the creepiest move a guy has ever tried to pull on you? On spring break one of my sisters and I asked a guy we just met what fraternity he was in and he responded with, None, Im a rapist. What are your plans after Graduation? Go to grad school and travel the world. All-time favorite TFM or TSM? I will stop drinking when Captain Morgan puts his foot down. TFM.
10
Steal their phone and snapchat pictures of feet to everyone Because no one wants to be known as the guy whos into feet stuff. Fill their room with telephone book paper Take all the house telephone books, rip out and crumple every page and throw them into your brothers room to create a mountain of paper and a laborious pledge task. Board up their room Grab a drill and some two by fours and turn their room into a prison. Especially hilarious during finals week. Indoor fireworks Ever thrown firecrackers at someone while they puked their balls up? Well its really fun. Bury them in furniture when theyre passed out. Because he deserves to be punished for passing out early. Spray your brother with a fire extinguisher Its lazy, sure. But its also hilarious. Draw a huge dick on his back Maybe he passed out the night before a float trip, maybe you guys are hitting the pool the next day. Either way, he wont know about this until its way too late. Perfectly rearrange his room on the lawn or roof So much effort goes into this that he wont be able to be madmaybe. Bonus points if you plug everything in. Military Grade Weaponry Rolling a smoke grenade into your brothers room as hes getting with a 4 is a great way to save him from the next mornings shame. Cover the passed out guy in sunless tanner Forget sharpies, sunless tanner isnt getting washed off any time soon. His life might be miserable for a week or two.

The most popular thing is vibrators. Everyone thinks that those are for personal use only, but all of them can be used by couples. Vibrating C-rings are very popular with every type of couple, even gay and lesbian couples.
Many would consider you a sexpert. How did you become one? We read. We talk to people. We get information from any source that we can, down from manufacturers to the people who make the products and the customers. I consider myself a lifelong student. Basically we are known as the tasteful place to find naughty gifts and intimacy enhancement products.
Do you offer any other services? We also offer workshops for exploring, improving and enhancing your sex life. So we have the classic Blow Him Away workshop Burlesque for the Bedroom. For the kink and bondage curious we are going to have a class on exploring that kind of a relationship. We also have Strokes for Blokes, and that is just this semester. In the past we have offered other classes along those lines, so Anal Health and Pleasure, Sex Toys 101, erotic massage and pleasure positions and other classes, and we are always looking for more.
What would you recommend someone buy for their partner? Things that people really like are the massage candles. These are solidified massage candles that melt at a low boiling point and the melted oil can be used for massaging. People that experiment with dominance and submission like to come in and experiment with little floggers, handcuffs and blindfolds, the kink spectrum. We are also known for our corsets. At Forbidden Fruit, we say, Looking sexy is a cinch! What would you say is the strangest thing you carry? That would probably fall into what is the medical play area. One of these items is a violet wand. This is literally an electrified device that sends a static charge. It is called the violet wand because the UV color that comes off it is ultraviolet.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEWS WITH QUIET COMPANY AND MORE OF SXSWS RISING STARS
Sometimes, if youre lucky, and if you possess the gift of persistence (aka harassment), you snag interviews with some of the most badass bands to showcase South by Southwest. This is one of those times. We had awesome/semi-awkward interviews with a few of SXSWs featured acts to put together our special music feature. Trust us: Theyre totally worth checking out.
Check'em out:

Weve been official for the last three years. We got in the first year because somebody else cancelled. Weve done it every year since then, so that was our foot in the door. We have good shows at South By.
Whats your favorite part about South By?
Theres a lot of people coming from out of town that wouldnt have seen you really otherwise. It gets you a lot of fans from out of the country, and its the one chance they get to see you. One time, Bill Murray was even at one of our shows. We didnt get to meet him, but everyone saw him, though.
How do you feel playing there as a local band?
[SXSW] is one of the bigger, cooler, more important festivals in the world and we are fortunate that we live here and are one of the few bands in Austin that play. Its hard for Austin bands to get in, because there are so many bands in the world. The people who put on South By want to showcase stuff you cant just see on the weekends. Its one more opportunity to play the music we love, hopefully for new people or for the right people.
You guys have had your music on MTV reality shows and Keeping Up with the Kardashians. How did that happen? Who are you listening to?
A: It was when MySpace was really big and they just kinda found us. It got us out there a little bit more. We keep letting them do it because its getting our name out there.
Whats the weirdest thing you guys do as a band?
Were all kinda normal dudes. Theres nothing quirky about us necessarily. I like to make myself sneeze. I enjoy it. I dont know why. But other than that, I think thats the only weird thing we like to do.
What do you have to say about your latest record?
Well thats actually cool because we actually just bought a bunch of CDs for our van: Papa John Misty, Sarah Jaffe, Metronomy Weve been listening a lot to the band were on tour with, Kopecky Family Band. I listen to a lot of pop radioI get my fill of Justin Bieber and Lady Gaga and shit like that. I know every song out there, you know? We love KeshaMe and my girlfriend are very huge Kesha fans.
Being from Austin, how does playing there compare to playing shows in other cities?
Check'em out:
we werent gonna be able to get in. We used the printers in McGarrah Jessee and looked to see what color wristbands they gave the VIPs. So we printed out paper, [made wristbands] and spray painted them gold, and just walked out on the rooftop and got free drinks all night. It was Grimes, Subtract and A$AP Rocky.
What is it like playing SXSW?
We just finished re-recording our first record, Shine Honesty, for a few different reasons. We just want a better sounding version of the first record, because a lot of our fans that weve accumulated over the last years dont even know that record. Everything is better and everything is ours, which is how we like it.
Austin is not, I would say, in our top 10 list of places where people are into brand new stuff. [Theres a] follow-the-leader mentality. And if you gain national popularity, you do well in Austin. We play a lot of college cities, but college is one of those places where if college kids dont know about you already, its gonna be hard.
What was the best show you saw at SXSW last year?
At the top of McGarrah Jessee, msn or something like thatMicrosoftwas running a party up there, a really huge party, and we knew
I think this is a very big year for uswere not playing in the little leagues, playing a bunch of crap little shows for Lonestar beer where nobodys at. This is the real deal for us. Its pressure but its a lot of excitement. The other thing is you play all these shows and its crazy and you dont even know how its gonna pan out til May or June, if anything is even worth anything. You just have to enjoy it and hope that someone sees your face. I like being aggressive, I like playing no-huddle offense, just doing it. Playing as good as I possibly can and executing consistently. Your tagline is Dirty Shinecan you explain what exactly that means?
Dirty Shine is just kind of something I came up with that means embracing your authentic selfwhatever it is, whoever you are.
How would you describe your sound?
Its one of the harder questions for me, but if I was gonna explain it, I would say back porch blues meets hip hop. I love hip hop beats and I love the stories of Nas and Jay-Z and getting out of where they were and making more of their lives and I really connected to that.

inehouse,
Our music, especially the first record, its a hybrid. Its a lot of influences put together, and then its obviously soul music, Motown influence in there, indie influence, indie rock and hip hopand its all mixed together in a blender makes you want to dance.
Weve had some crazies weve had to have carried off. When youre touching someone in a deep emotional, personal way and they happen to be a little cuckoo, it gets a little strange. Flatteringwith a bodyguard.

Im lucky enough to have my friends from The Airborne Toxic Events new record before [it comes out], and then Walk the Moon, who we took out on the road, and theyre doing great.
Have you had any crazy tour experiences?
That was very early days and that was one of the magic moments that happened at the beginning.Adam, who apparently hates everything, fell in love with our band. All the sudden we went to opening up for them. It was a big break and they were super nice.

Weve had crazy moments here and there playing in Paris one night and playing in
They can expect to be called out if they got their arms crossed and theyre sitting down, thats for sure. Theres nothing pretentious about this bandwe dont think were too cool for school; we want people to let their hair down and have fun with us.
I think its a very dynamic showtheres moments where you wanna stand up and dance and there are some more kind of intimate momentswhere its just me and my guitar. What they can expect most is just a great energyan energy thats contagious.
How would you explain your music to someone whos never heard it before?
Its so hard. We love classic rock, but we also lovewe grew up in the 90sso we love like Aaliyah and Destinys Child, but really its an agglomeration of what we grew up with90s with a classic twist.
Youre nominated for multiple NME (New Music Express) awards. Were you surprised?
fans, and just the fact that he heard our name and repeated it is a life changer. Literally, I can die happy now.
How was playing support shows for Mumford and Sons and Florence + The Machine?
We got nominated for four! I got nominated for Best Twitter, which was insane to me! I literally cried! I literally just tweet about puppies and nail polish, those are my favorite things to tweet about in the world. Thats all I do all day.
When you were nominated for your NMEs, Mick Jagger responded with: Haim? Never heard of them. What did you think about that?
I mean we were so excitedMick Jagger SAID our band name. We are the biggest Rolling Stones
They were both so amazing and so different. With Mumford we were playing these festivals, and it was like every Friday we would get to a random city in the United States, and we would all get there on Friday and party our asses off. There were nine bands and Mumford always scheduled a party. It was the craziest thing; it was like summer camp. Then we would all play shows on Saturday and party Saturday night and leave on Sunday and wait to see each other next Friday. And then Florence was insaneall the sudden we were playing with Florence which is like 20,000 peopleI was like shitting myself, I was so nervous.

How to get a Fabulous Darque Tan
COMPILED BY: MARIA ROQUE
ouve finally acquired that perfect beach bod but no ones going to notice those abs if theyre distracted by your body hair, so get it out of there! European Wax Center has been keeping Austin sexy and smooth for three years with their Ultimate Wax Experience. And the best part? FREE services for first-time visitors! What are you waiting for? Wax on, wax off!
Q: How is waxing better on the skin than other hair removal methods like shaving or depilatory creams? A: European Wax Centers Comfort Wax is a gentle hard wax that only adheres to the hair and not the skin. This minimizes any post-wax skin irritation. Our wax is applied without strips and goes on warm, not hot. Q: How can a first-time waxer with sensitive skin reduce the pain? A: Its all about the product! A first time waxing guest should look for a company that carries products and wax that cater to sensitive skin. Ask if the product contains alcohol. Alcohol can dry the skin and the wax, which could result in a more painful experience. Its also good to use a product that does not require strips, such as muslin or pellon.
