Definitions: It is a Group Discussion, as the name itself indicates, is a group activity carried out by Participating individuals exchange of ideas

among the individuals of a group on a specific topic. Group Discussion is an informal discussion in which participants of the same Educational standard discuss a topic of current interest. It is also known as leaderless discussion. It means its aim is to find out the natural Leadership level of the candidates. Strictly speaking, no one from the group or outside will be officially designated as leader or president or chairman or anything of the sort. Even the examiner or supervisor who launches the discussion will retire to the background. No one will participate or intervene in the deliberations of the group. Pros of Whole Group Discussion: Whole group discussions provide for greater interaction between teacher and students. Instructors maintain a greater control over what is being taught because they are able to steer the discussion. Auditory learners find them appealing to their learning style. Teachers can check on what students are retaining through questions posed. Whole group discussion is comfortable for many teachers because it is a modified form of lecture. Students have a tendency to stay focused on the lesson because they might be called on to answer questions. Students may feel more comfortable asking questions during whole group discussions. Listen to the subject carefully. Put down your thoughts on a paper. Support you point with some facts and figures Speak politely and pleasantly. Respect contribution from other members. Disagree politely and agree with what is right. Summarize the discussion if the group has not reached a conclusion Cons of Whole Group Discussion as a Teaching Method: Whole group discussions require setting up and enforcing ground rules for students. If these rules are not enforced then there is a possibility that the discussion could quickly go off-topic. Students who are weak in note-taking skills will have trouble understanding what they should remember from group discussions. This is even more so than in lectures in many cases because not only the teacher but fellow students are talking about the lesson. Some students may not feel comfortable being put on the spot during a whole group discussion. Over speak, intervene and snatch others chance to speak. Argue and shout during the group discussion. Look at the evaluators or a particular group member. Talk irrelevant things and distract the discussion Pose negative body gestures like touching the nose, leaning back on the chair, knocking the table with a pen etc. Display low self confidence with shaky voice and trembling hands.

Skills assessed in a Group Discussion is: Communication Skills Interpersonal Skills Leadership Skills Motivational Skills Team Building Skills Tolerance to Ambiguity Divergent Thinking Listening skills Presentation Skills Analytical / Logical skills Group discussion can define your character: Try to dominate the discussion. While discussing, learn to check your temper. Maybe you'll find others holding view which are abhorrent to you. But remember that they have a right to their opinions. Everyone does. Learn to respect their points of views even if you don't accept them. It shows maturity on your part. This will be a good training for controlling your emotions, which is of utmost importance in a group discussion. GROUP DISCUSSION IN HOME ECONOMICS EDUCATION: Some very effective are used by teachers of home economics to teach the students. Like, Brainstorming, pair-work, group-work, practical and project-work, problem solving activities, research by students, interview and survey-methods, discussion and cooperative learning. The use of pair work and small-group activities promotes peer collaboration and peer tutoring. In such group works students are provided with opportunities for critical analysis, evaluation and application of knowledge. When the students are provided an open and friendly atmosphere to express their views, they tend to create a balance between teacher and student, and the students learn to find solutions to problems on their own. In group discussions, the admirable student centered approach results in a good balance between teacher input and student activity, and it has the potential to broaden and enhance students learning experience. Further, these high-order thinking skills underpin some of the assessment objectives of the home economics syllabuses.

Conclusion: Whole group discussions are an excellent teaching method when used in conjunction with other methods. Instruction should be varied from day to day to help reach the most students possible. Teachers need to provide their students with note taking skills before starting discussions. It is important that teachers be good at managing and facilitating discussions. Questioning techniques are effective for this. Two questioning techniques that teachers employ is to increase their wait time after questions are asked and to only ask one question at a time. As we have seen, group discussions can take a variety of formats and are useful for all types of students. They can be done in preparation for job interviews or as extended speaking practice simply to increase fluency. It is important to consider the different sub-skills that are involved in participating in a group discussion and ensure that you do activities that address each of these. Additionally, structuring and varying the way that feedback is given will help the students to identify areas for improvement.
