1 Introduction
The Anton Paar CARBO 2100 CO
2
transducer is a powerful and highly accurate
transducer for continuous on-line carbon dioxide concentration measurement in
beverages. The CARBO 2100 transducer connects to an mPDS 2000V3
evaluation unit.
The mPDS 2000V3 calculates the CO
2
concentration from the saturation
pressure and temperature determined by the CARBO 2100 transducer. For
accurate CO
2
concentration determination the product type (beer, sparkling wine,
mineral water, product specific group), can be selected according to the currently
measured beverage.
Important:
A complete measuring system consists of a CARBO 2100 transducer and a
mPDS 2000V3. It is therefore essential to read the mPDS 2000 V3 instruction
manual and follow the instructions for the corresponding program.

2 Safety Instructions
B47IB34 9
2 Safety Instructions
This instruction manual does not claim to address all of the safety issues
associated with the use of the CARBO 2100 CO
2
transducer and samples. It
is the responsibility of the user to establish health and safety practices and
determine the applicability of regulatory limitations prior to use.
Before using the CARBO 2100 CO
2
transducer, read this instruction manual
completely.
Anton Paar GmbH only warrants the proper functioning of the CARBO 2100
CO
2
transducer if no unauthorized adjustments have been made to
mechanical parts, electronic parts and software, and the following points are
adhered to.
Follow all hints, warnings and instructions in the instruction manual to ensure
the correct and safe functioning of the CARBO 2100 CO
2
transducer.
Do not use the CARBO 2100 CO
2
transducer for any purpose other than
described in the instruction manual. Anton Paar GmbH is not liable for
damages caused by incorrect use of the CARBO 2100 CO
2
transducer.
Do not use any accessories other than those supplied or approved by Anton
Paar GmbH.
The installation procedure should only be carried out by authorized
personnel who are familiar with the installation instructions.
Do not operate the CARBO 2100 CO
2
transducer if a malfunction is
suspected, or damages, injuries or loss of life cannot be excluded under all
circumstances.
The CARBO 2100 CO
2
transducer is not an explosion-proof instrument and
therefore must not be operated in areas where there is a risk of explosion.
Never install the CARBO 2100 CO
2
transducer and the transducer in areas
where strong electromagnetic fields are present.
Service and/or maintenance procedures which involve removing outside
covers and working with the power switched on may only be performed by
authorized service personnel.
Ensure that all operators are fully trained to use the CARBO 2100 CO
2
transducer correctly and safely.
Due to the nature of the measurement, the measuring results not only
2 Safety Instructions
10 B47IB34
depend on the correct use and functioning of the CARBO 2100 CO
2
transducer, but may also be influenced by other factors. We therefore
recommend that the analysis results are plausibility tested before
consequential actions are taken.
Process transducers like the CARBO 2100 CO
2
transducer are often
exposed to extreme working conditions such as shock pressure, sudden
changes in temperature, aggressive samples, etc. which may cause drifts or
failure. Therefore, it is absolutely necessary to periodically check the
measured results and re-adjust the measuring system if required.
The impeller of the CARBO 2100 must not run dry. Install a liquid sensor to
protect the CARBO 2100 impller. When the line is empty the CARBO 2100
must be stopped via the corresponding input of the mPDS 2000V3.
Repair and service procedures may only be carried out by authorized
personnel or by Anton Paar GmbH.
Dispose of the CARBO 2100 CO
2
transducer according to the country-
specific legal requirements.

mPDS 2000V3 Evaluation Unit:
If the mPDS 2000V3 Evaluation unit is properly installed and connected,
handled with care and kept clean, no maintenance will be required.
CARBO 2100 Transducer:
CARBO 2100 Transducer service and maintenance intervals depend on the
operating conditions. The following maintenance is recommended:
Once a week:
1. Open the housing and check the tightness of the measuring chamber. If nec-
essary, tighten the diaphragms with a special side-mounted wrench. Do not
overtighten version 1 and 2 diaphragms (See Fig. 5-2). Clean the transducer
with hot water.
2. If the automatic draining of the condensate is not triggered, manually drain
the condensate in the pressure regulator.
5 Maintenance
16 B47IB34
Replacing the diaphragms:
The diaphragms move up and down every 15 seconds and this causes
mechanical stress. The diaphragms are therefore wearing parts and must be
replaced after a certain period of time. The typical working life of the diaphragms
is 6 12 months. Under extreme conditions (too high air pressure, ...), the working
life may be shorter.

7.1 Mounting the CARBO 2100 Transducer
The CARBO 2100 transducer may either be installed in the main line via
online fitting or in a bypass. Make sure that the CO
2
is completely dissolved
and there are no bubbles.
In any case, the maximum flow rate of 500 l/hr should not be exceeded.
The CARBO 2100 transducer should be mounted on a rigid, vibration free
base.
The CARBO 2100 transducer must be installed in a vertical position to
guarantee proper functioning (see figure 7.1-2).
The CARBO 2100 transducer must be mounted in the production line after
the SPR(n), DSRn and DPR(n). That means, if an SPR(n), DSRn or DPR(n)
is also installed, then the sample has to flow through the SPR(n), DSRn or
DPR(n) and then through the CARBO 2100 (see figure 7.1-1).
A compressed air supply (6 8 bar) has to be established. Depending on the
diaphragm version, set 4.5 to 6 bar pressure on the pressure regulator:
Pull the pressure setting button upwards (away from the housing).
Warning:
Installation and service by qualified and authorized personnel only.
Read this chapter carefully before mounting the CO
2
transducer. Wrong
handling may damage the CO
2
transducer.
The maximum line pressure is 10 bar.

Important:
The diaphragms are screwed in correctly and tightly at the factory. After
start up, a small leakage may occur. Tighten the screws crosswise until no
more leakage occurs. Do not overtighten the screws for diaphragm
versions 1 and 2.
Version 3 diaphragms can be screwed in very tightly because there is a
metal sleeve vulcanized into the diaphragm.
7 Installation
B47IB34 23
For installation in the main line the Anton Paar on-line fitting can be used (see
figure 7.1-4).
Important:
Connect the "Inlet" and "Outlet" of the CARBO 2100 transducer properly and
correctly. The direction of flow is important for the proper function of the CO
2
transducer.

7.2 Compressed air supply
The compressed air should be dry and clean. The outside diameter of the hose is
6mm, the inner diameter is 4mm.
Following compressed air quality is necessary:
Class 5 DIN ISO 8573-1
max. particle size 40 meter
max. particle number 10 mg/m
3
max. pressure dew point +7C
max. oil content 25 mg/m

7.3 Electrical Wiring
Connect the CARBO 2100 transducer to the mPDS 2000V3 evaluation unit.
The mPDS 2000V3 supplies the CARBO 2100 with power. The mPDS 2000V3
must also be supplied with an additional 24 V (0.7 A, isolated).
Interface cable:
The interface cable (8 x 0.25mm
2
) is 10 m long.
Warning:
Follow all hints in this Chapter. Installation and service procedures may only
be performed by authorized personnel.
Important:
The cables for the connection of the transmitters and actuators have to
meet local regulations and local environmental conditions with special
attention to mechanical stress.
Only shielded cables with double insulation are allowed. The shield has to
be grounded on one side only.
Connect the mPDS 2000V3 to the CARBO 2100 transducer using a cable.
Connect a signal from a liquid sensor to second digital output of the
mPDS 2000V3 (DI 2). IF the measuring chamber is empty the CARBO
2100 must be stopped.
To prevent measuring errors occurring due to differences in potential, it is
essential to use a isolated 24 VDC power supply.

10 Technical Reference
B47IB34 35
10 Technical Reference
10.1 Operating Principle
The determination of the CO
2
content is based on Henrys Law, which defines the
relationship between the concentration of the dissolved gas and its saturation
pressure at a given temperature.
The measurement is repeated every 15 seconds. (default)
During cleaning the CARBO 2100 transducer works in normal measuring mode.
The impeller creates high turbulence to improve the cleaning procedure.
1. The product is flowing through the measur-
ing chamber.
2. The valves are closed. The product is
flowing through a bypass. A sample of the
product is separated in the measuring
chamber.
3. The sample is decompressed (13.5%) by a
decompression valve. The special Anton
Paar impeller brings the chamber pressure
to the corresponding saturation pressure
within a few seconds. The saturation
pressure and the temperature of the sample
are measured.
36 B47IB34
10.2 Calculation of the CO
2
Content
From the saturation pressure and the temperature of the sample the
analyzer calculates the content of dissolved CO
2
. The relationship between
CO
2
content and its saturation pressure at a given temperature depends on
the product composition, e.g. alcohol content, sugar
content, ...
The mPDS 2000V3 analyzer has four product specific formulas for mineral
water, beer, soft drinks and sparkling wine built in.
The difference between the products is not very large. At a saturation
pressure of 2.5 bar at 10 C the CO

content of mineral water is 5.87 g/l, of
beer 5.62 g/l, of soft drinks 5.26 g/l and of sparkling wine 5.16 g/l.
In laboratories different tables are used, which usually include the influence
of the head space of bottles. In addition from the on-line measurement to the
bottle the CO
