TOMO RYU TAIKAI 2011

ESSENCE OF THE KOKA NINJA SOKE; ANSHU CHRISTA JACOBSON
HEADMISTRESS 10 OF THE BUDO RYU SCHOOL OF WAR

According to legend Tomo Ryu Shinobijutsu was developed in the Kemu Restoration as a samuria tradition that had its primary focus on it's use of the short sword (kodachi) as well as several different kobuki (old weapons). It was during this time (1333-1336) in the Shiga prefecture (known as the Omi Province before the prefectural system was established) of Japan that Gohei Tomo and two other ronin samurai (Jinsuke Tomo and Senri Akutagawa) developed this method of warfare to serve as a means of self-protection for their families, their village and their lord. As Japan entered Sengoku Jidai (Warring States period in Japanese history) a time of social upheaval, political intrigue, and nearly constant military conflict that lasted roughly from the middle of the 15th century to the beginning of the 17th century. Because of this constant struggle, these families had to align sides politically for their survival. It was during this time that the art flurished and other areas such as Bryaku (tactics), Chh (espionage) and Intonjutsu (escaping and concealment) became the strength of this military tradition. It was in this development that these methods of guerrilla tactics that would later be known as Tomo Ryu Shinobijutsu.

Tomo Ry was private school of training and none of the previous headmasters felt the need to list their names in encyclopedias of the martial arts or to join large martial arts organizations. Therefore, not much was known or recorded about the school outside the school itself until the 21st Soke; Anshu Christa Jacobson began teaching publicly and accepting more than a handful of students at any one time. Most of the techniques of Tomo Ry are simple and conform to natural combative movement. However, there are many scrolls concerning Tomo Ry today from the past masters which are divided up in the four sections of the school and are currently in possession of Anshu Christa Jacobson, 21st Soke of the school. In May of 2011 the 3rd Annual Tomo Ryu Shinobi Essence of the Koka Ninja Keiko Event was held! Placed in this months warrior notes are photos from this historic event!

Anshu teaches the history of the arts, classical kata as well as the present applications, deeper understandings of these 7 warrior traditions that make up the Budo Ryu Ninjutsu Dojo!

In this photo I wanted to use the contrast of the room so that people would look at the arts behind me, yet keeping my body / silhouette directly of the middle of the picture, to help with the "IN / YO" of the photograph. Just as the screen behind me shows the dramatic difference between tiger and dragon, the photo also shows the contrast between light and dark. This in itself is also a major lesson of ninjutsu. The screen behind me was painted by Kano Tanyu in the edo period (1602-1674) The piece is called Dragon and Waves; Tiger among the Bamboo. I hope that you all enjoyed today's lesson. We also offer Weapon Training Programs for those that only want to learn the art of Kobujutsu (old warrior arts of ancient weapons). YES WEAPONS ARE INCLUDED IN THE COMPLETE BLACK BELT PROGRAM, but there are many out there that already study a form of martial arts such as karate, kempo, kung fu, krav maga, etc, etc and just want to add some weapons training to their current training program! We do offer many differnet weapons to choose from, each one has it own aspects and method in war. I know that many programs will place 5-10 weapons on one DVD in under 90mins and say that is how to use the weapon, here we cannot do that, because we do not want to cheat the student from acheiving their goals in the martial arts!
