Engineers and engineering

Engineering is in the hands of the engineer. I believe that the engineers have a responsibility on what technology that person would create. The documentary "The Day After Trinity" deals with the life of Robert J. Oppenheimer and his contribution to the making of the atomic bomb. The short story "The Poem" by Ray Bradbury depicts an artist with powers to create or destroy life with his writing. In another short story by Bradbury, "The Veldt", deals with a futuristic society where kids have become addicted to technology. In the documentary "American Experience: New York Underground" the innovation of the New York City subway system and how it was made is explored. Engineers have the responsibility of what they design, which has the possibility to either help mankind or destroy it. In the Oppenheimer documentary, the engineer wanted to help build the atomic bomb because he believed that this contribution would help the United States win WWII; he believe that making the bomb would help the world get rid of Nazi Germany. Instead they killed thousands of innocent Japanese with two atomic bombs. The engineer should think before creating. Think about what? What exactly should he/she be considering? Anyone that has the power to create things should have the responsibility on how to use it. "His eyes shone fiercely. 'Then I can destroy the universe and immortalize it at one and the same instant. It's in the power of a sonnet, if I choose to write it'" (Bradbruy,781). David, a character from the story, found out about his powers and was not responsible enough to handle it. David's wife, who had more reasoning, tried to manage David's powers. Engineers have the power of creation; with this power responsibility will follow. Engineering technology can become an addiction. "They walked down the ball. 'I locked the nursery up,' explained the father, 'and the children broke back in to it during the night...'" (Bradbury, 8). The kids were punished; they were not allowed to use the nursery but they were addicted to this technology. Since their addiction was so strong they decided to kill their parents in order to save the nursery. The short story was published during the 1950's and is amazing how the depiction of the addiction to technology is not far from the present situation. Engineers would have to think about what is good for the individual. Is the same thing good for everyone? There are some engineers who did take the on the responsibility in order to help their fellow man. In the documentary "New York Underground" engineers and workers worked day and night in order to provide an essential service to New York, the subway. Because of the subway congestion from the streets fell 70%, and life and businesses grew. My stand on engineering is based on how the engineers would design something to help the world.

Engineers have become more wanted because technology is advancing in areas such as medicine, communication, and the environment. In the case of the atomic bomb it was necessary to fight the enemy, but having the power to create should not be used to destroy life. Sometimes the things that are created can become an addiction. Engineers must decide whether to create something that could help or destroy the world." Watch your tenses; stay in one tense or the other throughout the essay. You switch back from the past to the present tense intermittantly in this essay, and it is distracting. Also watch the inappropriate and incorrect use of punctuation. There are some places where you need to be more specific, because vagueness in an essay confuses your reader and eventually you will lose them. You make a good moral stand, but make sure your supporting information is enough to back it up. Specify what "responsibilities" should be taken and make sure that you are speaking for yourself and not for others, as you cannot tell how someone else should live or how/what they think.
