Professional Self-Assessment Form

Teacher Candidates Name: Nakita Manigault Date: February 19, 2013 Mentor Teachers Name: Ms. G. Kennedy School: Whittaker Elementary School Grade Level (s)/Subject Area(s): 4th Grade English Language Arts ______________________________________________________________________________ Instructions to the teacher candidate: Please reflect on your professional performance, and respond to each of the following prompts. 1. In terms of the ADEPT Performance Standards, what are your professional strengths? How have you built on these strengths so far, and how do you plan to do so in the future? - My strengths include APS 4 through 9. I strive to perform at my best on all levels but I have noticed that my strong suit is APS 5: Instructional Strategies. I strive to plan appropriate lessons for students that are relatable to them and real life situations. I plan activities that are on grade level, but offer a challenge for the students. Thus far I have tried to make sure I find activities that I believe will interest the students, and I also try to pair the lesson with a real life skill building strategy. - Another strength I have is in APS 10: Professional Responsibilities I try to take the initiative to do things within the classroom and around the school. For example during the faculty meeting, the teachers were responsible for scoring the schools mock writing assessments. I scored one whole class by myself without having being asked to do so. I know that everyone is looking at me with a magnifying glass and I want to make sure everything I do is appropriate and professional. I plan to continue taking initiative by seeking to do things that I know needs to be done without having to be asked. 2. In terms of the ADEPT Performance Standards, what are your professional challenges? How do you plan to meet these challenges? - Although my strong suit is APS 5, Ive noticed that I tend to over plan activities for the students to complete during the period. Over planning is good in terms of making sure students have more than enough work to do to ensure proper use of instructional time. However for the sake of only having 50 minutes for each lesson, I have to master planning enough to ensure the students are learning content, but not to plan great activities that are never utilized. Ms. Kennedy suggested that I organize my materials to fit my schedule in the classroom. I have planned my future lessons to reflect that and I will try my best to make sure I keep the activities within the time limits so that I can maximize my instructional time but actually implementing everything I planned.

I also feel that I need to work more on becoming more firm in my disciplinary actions (APS 9: Classroom Management). I have control over how the flow of the classroom affects instructional time, but I know that when students misbehave in the hallways or in between classes and during lunchtime, I can be a bit lackadaisical in handling the issue right then and there. I think that I try not to overstep my boundaries as a student teacher. I think that the students respect me because I have demanded it from them, but I think that I could also step it up more. I will try to speak up a lot more when students are off task and require them to follow the same rules that apply when it is only Ms. Kennedy in the classroom. However, I do know that as time progresses, I will become a lot more firm and more confident with students. - Although I try to monitor and check for comprehension and, overall, have succeeded in adjusting lessons to accommodate students who do not comprehend the information, I feel as though I could become better at APS 7: Monitoring/Enhancing Learning. In my effort to make sure I address everything in my lesson plan and trying to stay on task, I lose my train of thought and sometimes my questions during lessons are on the lower end of Blooms taxonomy or they are very broad. I plan to work on making my questions more specific, and higher level to engage students in critical thinking and to help them better answer the questions. - In regards to APS 3: Assessments, so far I have not created any formal assessments to administer to students. I have created independent practice and homework activities for students that have been challenging, but not impossible. Students have performed well on the assignments I have created for them. In the time I have left I would like to create and administer a test to students. 3. Describe your students overall progress and achievement. What insights have you gained into ways to improve student progress and achievement? - I have noticed that all of the students are very capable of 80% or better work. Most of them try to speed through and finish assignments so that they can say that they were first, or they do not actually check and double check their work. During the small amount of time Ive been in the classroom, I can tell when students are actually working hard or if they are being lazy. For example, today two students who usually do not perform well on tests both made 90% on a test that I read through with them (These students are low level readers, and during tests I take them to another room to read over the passages and questions to make sure they understand what they are supposed to do). They were very excited to see that they focused and worked hard and it paid off. I will try to emphasize to students that it is very important to take your time and focus on their work. 4. How will you use the knowledge you have gained through this professional selfassessment to promote your continuous professional growth and collaboration? - I am naturally a reflective person. I always think about the things I have done and said in my personal life. Immediately after I teach a lesson, I reflect on what worked and what

didnt work, and I make corrections when planning new lessons. I plan to continue the habit by reflecting continuously and making necessary improvements. I will also look for tips from Ms. Kennedy. She has been teaching for 15 years and I know that she has been in my position and knows how to become better.
