Blessed Francois de Laval

Martins Blessed Francois de Laval (1623-1708), was the first Roman Catholic bishop of Canada. He was born in France, a member of the noble Montmorency family, who are believe to go back to pagan Gaul. In spite of its rank, the family was not wealthy, and when his older brothers were killed in battle, Francois inherited the responsibility for his family and interrupted his studies for the priesthood in order to arrange for their financial security. In 1658, he was appointed vicar apostolic for New France, as French Canada was then known. In spite of difficulties caused by politics both ecclesiastical and secular Bishop Laval traveled extensively, confirming hundreds, founding parishes, and instituting a seminary. Seeing the damage caused to Native Americans by alcohol, he worked to stop traders from paying them for furs with liquor. As a result of his work, at the time of his retirement the number of parishes had increased from 5 to 35, the number of priests from 24 to 102, and the number or religious women from 32 to 97. He was known for his holiness, his spirit of poverty, and his generosity to the poor. Bishop Laval died in 1708, exhausted from his work, and was immediately acclaimed by the people as a saint. He was beatified by Blessed Pope John Paul II in 1980. Blessed Francois de Laval, pray for us.
