St. Frances of Rome

As a young woman, Frances had a very comfortable life. Her husband Lorenzo, the son of Roman nobles, prized her beauty and her goodness, and they had several children whom they dearly loved. The family lived in a castle with cooks, maids, and a gardener. But there was one thing that prevented her life from being complete: Frances wanted with all her heart to serve the poor. Most of the noble people Frances knew would have thought this a senseless desire, but her sister-in-law, Vannozza, shared her secret dream. Dressed in their plainest clothes, the two young women would take baskets of food to the poor of the city. Lorenzo supported Frances unusual service to others. He donated money from his familys riches for the work. Frances was so respected in Rome that many other rich women decided to serve with her. But Frances life suddenly changed. Rome was split by civil war. Lorenzo and their son, Battista, were taken prisoner. Soldiers burned and looted the castle. Frances, Vannozza, and the children continued to live in a part of the castle that remained standing. There they cared for the many refugees wandering the city. When money ran out, they sold their jewels for food and medicine. After that, they begged in the streets. Three years later, Frances children, Evangelista and Agnes, died from the plague. Even in her grief, Frances cared for others. After a time Lorenzo and Battista were allowed to return from exile, but Lorenzos health had been ruined, and he died three years later. In the last years of her life Frances lived with the order of women she had founded to care for the sick. She is still beloved in her city, and each year on her feast day, her family palace is opened to the public. Romans come in crowds to remember and honor her. St. Frances of Rome, pray for us.

SAFE ENVIRONMENT REVIEW

A safe environment program includes ongoing training for children and young people with age appropriate education pertaining to their personal safety and with direction as to when they should seek assistance from a trusted adult. As part of our ongoing training with our students OMMS teachers will provide an age appropriate SafeEnvironment Review/Education for their respective classroom on Tuesday or Wednesday, March 19 or March 20. For your convenience we have included some handouts in todays newsletter to assist you in your discussions with your child to continue this Remember everyone education process at home. has a shared responsibility to ensure a childs safety.

OMMS 2013 SCIENCE AND ART FAIR
This year not only did we change venues for our annual Science and Art Fair, but our Middle School students were given an opportunity to combine knowledge with their creative ingenuity to bring about an Invention Fair. The students received support from their Science teacher, Ms. Lida, but the Inventions were their own design. I must say this approach sparked enthusiasm; their inventions were quite impressive, purposeful and several adults were heard to comment we should market these ideas! The Science Fair itself is a culmination of studies and projects that begin as early as our Primary level; everything builds upon what students have learned or experienced as this approach fosters a strong foundation. Our Junior and Senior Elementary students spoke to all who stopped by their projects to explain the Scientific Method with respect to the project they chose to submit. All were excited and enthusiastic about sharing their project; it is always wonderful to witness students engaged in their own learning! On behalf of all we would like to extend a special thank you to Ms. Lida for providing the POWER POINT PRESENTATION so all could view OMMS Science and Art in action. We also would like to thank our older students, Miss Susan, Ms. Lida, Ms. Cyndi, Ms. Erika, Ms. Janie and Mr. Sharp for their many hands, hands that were necessary to assist with preparations and setting up the venue in the McKeon Center..... teachers and students working together for a common goal! We certainly hoped you found the Science projects/ inventions educational and enjoyed the glimpse into the creative Art offered at OMMS! Thank you for joining us last Thursday and we certainly hope to see you this Thursday for our Annual Book Fair and Spaghetti Night; remember same location the McKeon Center. For anyone interested in obtaining their own copy of the 2013 ART POSTER you can place your order in the main office. A single copy will be $36; if we order more than 4 then the cost will be $30.

Annual Spaghetti Dinner & Scholastic Book Fair

Looking for an evening of great food and fun? Come join us Thursday, March 14, 2012 from 5:30-8:00pm for our Annual Spaghetti Dinner and Scholastic Book Fair. This years food is being catered by Fratellis Italian Kitchen in Oceanside. Advanced ticket purchase prices are as follows: Adults $6.00, Children under 10 years of age $4.00 and Seniors 55+ are $5.00. Tickets purchased the day of the event are: $9.00 adults, $6.00 for seniors 55+, and $5.00 for children under ten. All meals include one generous serving of pasta and sauce, salad, bread and butter, and one beverage. Second helpings and dessert will be available for purchase at an additional charge. Order forms are available in the front office.
CHRISTMAS IN JULY
~ There will be a Christmas in July Chair Meeting on Wednesday, March 13th, at 6:30 pm. It will be held upstairs in the teachers lounge located next to Room 222. ~ Once again, we will be collecting for this years Christmas in July Jewelry Boutique. Since it takes
us many weeks to collect, appraise, and clean your items, we are now gratefully accepting donations. Everything sells: costume jewelry, rosaries, watches, broaches, gold and silver items, broken chains, single earrings, etc. We also accept womens accessories in good condition. The boutique raised over $4,600 last year. No item is insignificant! The $1.00 and $2.00 pieces of jewelry comprise 25% of profits. Jewelry $3 to $5 items comprise another 25% of profits, while your gold and silver comprise 50% of earnings. If you no longer wear it, please consider donating it. The boutique is a very popular booth, bringing in repeat customers each year. You may drop off your items in the school office or give them to Zophia or Ann. Thank you for your generosity. Ann McKinnell, Boutique co-chair. ~ Spring has arrived and as you begin that spring cleaning remember, our Christmas in July Sister Gladys booth is collecting used items (no clothing). Just drop them off here at the school office. ~ Please remember that if you need to do pre-work for Christmas in July your form needs to be turned in to the CIJ folder in the office by Friday March 22nd. Pre-work will be given to those families that need to work on Thursday or Friday and to those who can help with Construction, Traffic, or Farmers Market. P.E. NEWS.GOT DIRT?

OMMS P.E. needs fill dirt to fill in holes and ditches on the field at the south east side of school. As soon as the field is ready, our students will be able to play kickball and softball, as well as use the perimeter as a mini track. If you can assist us, please contact the school office. Thank you.
2012-2013 OMMS Yearbooks

It is time to place your order for the OMMS Yearbook. Unfortunately, the school will be unable to order extra copies of the yearbook, so if you would like to have one, please place your order before the deadline. We are also accepting orders for Love Notes, sponsorship, and business sponsors. Order forms are available in the school office. Be sure and place your orders before April 1st!

to those who participated in Saturdays NCPL Track Meet: Isabella, Evan S., Zion, Royce C., Ryan, Cadence, Rachel, and Ashley. They were awesome! Also we would like to thank all the parents, who helped out as well as cheered on our OMMS athletes.
