a re-vamping of the City of Merritts zoning bylaw last updated in 2004 is being finalized, and consolidated for ease of use. the major changes are proposed in the areas of parking & landscaping, development density, temporary structures (ie fabric carports, cargo containers) and garden suites. it also includes a number of mapping changes, and if you received a letter it means that a property within 30m is undergoing a zoning change. Parking, in particular, will be addressed differently than in the past. Waiving parking requirements for businesses in the downtown core had been thought to be an incentive for development, but that has not been the case. the new model will implement cash in lieu, where a payment will get a business forgiveness for not providing the required parking stalls. theres more info at www.merritt.ca
