Why were working to improve air quality in Dundee

Dundee City Council and its partners are working to encourage Dundees residents to use less polluting travel options. By doing so, we hope to improve air quality in our city and make our streets safer and more pleasant. Poor air quality is a problem in many urban areas and transport is the main cause of pollution in most UK cities. Polluted air contributes to a range of health problems. Young and old people often su er from its e ects most.

Buses getting cleaner and greener

Travelling by bus in Dundee is becoming even better with signi cant investment in new buses by local bus operators National Express Dundee and Stagecoach Strathtay. Supported also by Dundee City Council and the Scottish Government, this brings the very latest technology to the citys bus eet, reducing air pollution to bene t everyone in Dundee. As this is provided on new, high quality vehicles, bus passengers bene t from a smoother and more comfortable travelling experience too.

Did you know that the air inside a car is three times more polluted than air breathed by pedestrians? This is because cars travel in the middle of the road, where pollution is most concentrated. Just one bus in Dundee can replace at least 30 cars on the roads, helping to reduce air pollution as well as tra c congestion.

Whats more, using the bus is around 30% cheaper than the car for the typical journey in Dundee. Dundees buses are getting cleaner and greener all the time. Look out for the new electric hybrid buses in the city these use the energy created when the driver brakes and converts it into electricity, reducing fuel use and pollution at the same time.

Our new eet of hybrid-electric double deckers is a signi cant investment, not only for Dundees route network but also for the wider local environment. Im certain our customers will enjoy the experience of travelling on our green buses, which carry the very latest in on-board technology. Moreover, well all bene t from cleaner air, and well be reducing our carbon footprint by a signi cant 30%.

2013 will see the introduction of QR codes at bus stops across the city. QR codes can be scanned by a smartphone to provide waiting passengers with accurate information about approaching buses. You dont need to stand at the bus stop any more wondering when your bus is coming. Scan the QR code at the bottom of the bus stop display and you will see real time arrivals on your smart phone.
