    Cushing's syndrome can be caused by both non-modifiable factors like being a female aged 20-50, as well as modifiable factors such as chronic corticosteroid use, pituitary tumors, adrenal tumors, genetic disorders, or ectopic ACTH-secreting tumors. The condition develops when a tumor secretes high levels of ACTH, stimulating the adrenal glands to overproduce cortisol and leading to symptoms of prolonged high cortisol including Cushing's syndrome.

    Growth of ACTH secreting tumor

    Synthesis and increased secretion of ACTH

    ACTH stimulate adrenal cortex to secrete cortisol Synthesis and secretion of cortisol

    Increased cortisol

    Suppression of cortisol and ACTH secretion

    Decreased level of ACTH

    Atrophy of remaining adrenal cortex

    Alteration of remaining adrenal cortex

    Alteration of cortisol secreting activity

    Prolonged and excessive cortisol level
