Le Prsent

The present tense is used to describe an ongoing action or an action that occurs regularly. Examples: Quest-ce que tu fais? Je fais mes devoirs de maths. Nous allons souvent en France lt. The French present tense has only one form, unlike the English one. Je vais = I go, Im going (Therefore, never translate I am going by : Je suis aller)

The present tense is formed by taking away the final two letters of the infinitive (-er, -ir, -re) and adding the appropriate endings: -ER verbs : E/ ES / E / ONS / EZ / ENT -IR verbs : IS / IS / IT / ISSONS / ISSEZ / ISSENT -RE verbs : S / S / blank / ONS / EZ / ENT Er verbs with slight irregularities - Verbs ending in yer change y to i before silent endings: e, es, ent. Examples: essayer, nettoyer. Jessaie (try), je nettoie (clean); but: nous essayons, nous nettoyons. - Verbs ending in eter take tt before silent endings. Example: jeter (throw away). Je jette; but nous jetons. - Verbs ending in eler take ll before silent endings. Example: appeler. Jappelle; but nous appelons. - Verbs ending in ger take e before broad vowel endings. Examples: manger, nager. Nous mangeons, nous nageons. - Verbs ending in cer take on c before broad vowel endings. Example: lancer (throw), avancer (move on). Nous lanons, nous avanons. - In verbs like acheter (se lever, amener (to bring), se promener, mener (lead to), the -e just before the last syllable becomes - at all forms except nous and vous. - In verbs like esprer (hope) (prfrer) the just before the last syllable becomes - at all forms except nous and vous.

(elles) ____________________________ Les verbes pronominaux - reflexive verbs Reflexive verbs are just the same as ordinary verbs except that they take an extra pronoun in front. Look at these exemples: Here is the reflexive verb se laver (to wash oneself) in full:

Je me lave Tu te laves Il / elle se lave Nous nous lavons Vous vous lavez Ils / elles se lavent These reflexive pronouns mean oneself but we often leave them out in English. Examples : Je me lave = I wash Je mamuse = I enjoy myself Reflexive verbs also convey the idea of each other , for instance in Nous nous aimons (we love each other). Whenever you use a part of the body with a reflexive verb, the definite articles le, la, les, l are used instead of the possessive adjectives mon, ma, mes. Example : Je me brosse les dents I brush my teeth Reflexive verbs in the negative form The reflexive pronoun remains in front of the verb. Place ne and pas on either side of the group [pronoun + verb]. Example : Je [me repose] Je ne [me repose] pas
