CHIEF LIBRARIANS REPORT

Library News Highlights November 20 2013

1. Hispanic Heritage Month


Hispanic Heritage month took place from September 15 to October 15. DC Public Library celebrated Hispanic Heritage Month with Spanish Language Story Times, and special performances at both Neighborhood Libraries and at MLKML by the Maru Montero Dance Company, Uno, Dos, Tres Con Andres, and Teatro de la Luna. The library also offered programs for adults including a Latino GLBT networking reception in partnership with the DC Office of Latino Affairs and the DC Office of Human Rights.

2. Affordable Care Act


DC Public Library is working with the DC Health Benefit Exchange to help district residents connect with the information they need about the new health care options that are available to them, under the Affordable Care Act. On November 23 in-person assistance, insurance representatives, and entertainers will come together for an all-day enrollment fair and many libraries including MLKML are hosting regular information sessions for the public. 3. DC Tech Meet-Up
DC Tech Meet-Up had their October meeting in the Great Hall of the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. More than 500 technologists, entrepreneurs, investors, and members of the broader innovation community came together to talk about software, hardware, and tech services demos. The program consisted of 12 Demos and Q&A sessions and featured a variety of presentations from an entrepreneur who provides graphic design packages for business, to a software developer who created a new language learning program.

3. Lemony Snicket at MLKML


Politics and Prose partnered with DC Public Library to present an author talk with popular Childrens author Lemony Snicket on October 17th at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. He discussed his new series All the Wrong Questions and then stayed to sign books making sure to make a personal connection with each person he met. While guests waited to have their books signed the MLKML Childrens staff handed out Lemony Snicket activities and played video trivia.

5. Early Childhood Play Area at MLKML


There is a new early childhood play area in the Childrens Room at the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial Library. The play area was designed for infants and toddlers. The area for infants has a low wall with items that children can manipulate, a large teddy bear for to lean up against a crawl-through tunnel, mirror, and an activity table. On the other end of the room there is an area for preschoolers to play with dress-up costumes, and cook with play food in a play kitchen. Additionally the board books have been moved into that area for easy access. Customers and staff alike are very excited about having a new place for children to explore and create.

6. National Book Festival


DC Public Library participated in the 2013 National Book Festival. The annual Festival, sponsored by the Library of Congress, was held on September 21 and 22. DC Public Library staff had a booth representing the District of Columbia in the Pavilion of the States on September 21. There they gave away DC Public Library themed gifts and goodies, gave special prizes to visitors who already had a DC Public Library card, and stamped National Book Festival Passports.

7. AIA DC Merit Award for Mount Pleasant


Architecture firm CORE was awarded a Merit Award in the Historic Resources category for the Washington Chapter of the American Institute of Architects 2013 Design Awards. The award acknowledged COREs ability to modernize and expand the building while preserving and celebrating the historic assets already there including portions of the original faade and the Aurelius Battaglia PWA/CWA commissioned childrens murals in the Childrens Room. 8. Dream Lab Logo Contest


DC Public Library launched a search in July for a logo for the Digital Commons. Entrants 13 years of age or older were encouraged to take the mission of the Digital Commons and the Dream Lab and create a logo that spoke to all of the services that are offered. Entrants submitted their designs via an online form. Library staff reviewed all entries after the contest closed on August 17th. The winner of the contest was Ian Barin. He was awarded a $500.00 Visa Gift Card for his design. His logo can be seen on the left. Congratulations Ian!

9. Opportunities 50+
On October 22 DC Public Library, the DC Public Library Foundation, and the AARP Foundation kicked off a six-week pilot project called Opportunities 50+. The project, which is designed to draw new customers to the library focuses on services for older adults. The pilot project will start at the Anacostia and Lamond-Riggs Neighborhood Libraries. The program will include drop-in informational sessions that will be held three times a week. The sessions will be staffed by volunteers who can guide customers to relevant AARP and library services. The library will also offer a variety of programs in partnership with AARP and other library departments like Washingtoniana, Adaptive Services, and the Digital Commons. 10. DC Reads
DC Public Library kicked off the DC Reads Program on October 15. The program runs through November 15. This years title is Frederick Douglass in Washington, D.C.: The Lion of Anacostia by local historian and now part -time library associate in Special Collections John Muller. Programs include a two-mile walking tour of Southeast DC led by the author, a Frederick Douglass Animatron discussion made possible by the THEARC Theater, a live chat event with the author and a Finale and Reception in partnership with Politics and Prose bookstore and the DC Public Library Foundation.
