1. (a) Explain the moment area method to find slope and deflection of a beam.
(b) A cantilever beam of span L is point loaded, P at the free end. Find the Slope
and deflection using moment area method, assuming uniform flexural rigidity,
EI. [16]

2. A simply supported beam of span L is loaded with U.D.L, w per unit length. The
cross section of the beam is rectangular. Determine the section of the beam for
uniform strength

(a) When depth is constant.


(b) When breadth is constant. σb -bending stress. [16]

3. A cantilever which is fixed at one end and propped at other end and of length 4m
is subjected to point load 20 KN at the mid span.
Find the prop reaction. [16]

4. AB = BC=CD= DE = 2m, EI = 2×1014 Nmm2 For the overhang beam loaded as


shown in figure1 , find the deflection at C Using castiglinos theorem. [16]

5. Find the horizontal and vertical deflections at C using unit load method for the
crane loaded as shown in (figure2). [16]

6. A slender column,3m long ,36mm in diameter transmits a longitudinal thrust P


acting at the center of the ends. The strut is initially slightly bent the initial
central deflection is 5mm.Find the total max. deflection and the max.compressive
stress induced in the section ,when P=9KN,E=210GN/ mm2 [16]

7. A cast iron of hollow circular section 200mm external dia ,thickness of metal
20mm,length 5m,has to take a load of 120 KN at an eccentricity of 20 mm from the
geometrical axis. If the ends are fixed, calculate max. and min. stresses induced in
the section taking E=120 KN/mm2 .Also calculate max. permissible eccentricity
so that no tension is induced anywhere in the section. [16]

8. A beam column which is fixed at both ends is subjected to transverse central load
,and axial compressive load

(a) Write the beam column equations at section


(b) Give the boundary conditions. [16]

2. A cantilever composite beam of span 6 m carries a point load of 100KN at a distance


of 2 m from the free end. The beam is made of aluminum 100× 50mm2 reinforced
with steel plates 50×10 mm2 . Determine the maximum deflection and slope for
the composite beam. Esteel = 3.5× Ewood . Esteel = 2×105 N/mm2 . [16]

3. A continuous beam of span 10 m is propped at a distance of 4m from one end .It


carries UDL of 60KN/m unto propped point from the same end .Remaining part
consists of UDL of 100KN/m., find the reactions and moments using clapeyron’s
theorem [16]

4. Determine the vertical and horizontal deflections at free end C of a cantilever frame
shown in figure1 using Castiglino’s theorem. Neglect the effect of axial deforma-
tions. Assume uniform flexural rigidity,EI. [16]

5. Find the forces in all the members of the structure and tabulate the results as
shown in figure2 . [16]

6. A hollow rectangular column of length 5 m with uniform thickness of 40 mm is


fixed at one end and hinged at the other end as shown in (figure3). Find the Euler
crippling load . E = 2x105 N/mm2 [16]

7. A built up column consisting of rolled steel beam ISWB-300 with the two plates
200mm×10mm connected at the top and bottom flanges .Calculate the safe load
the column can carry using Rankine’s theory,if the length is 3m and both ends are
fixed. factor of safety 3 Crushing stress fc=320N/mm2 .
K=α=1/7500 properties of the ISWB-300 are:A=6133mm2
Ixx = 9821.6×104mm4
Iyy =9901 ×104 mm4 [16]

8. A beam-column of span L, which is hinged at one end and roller supported at


the other end is subjected to axial compressive load P, at the ends followed by a
clockwise couple M at the center

(a) Write the beam column equations considering buckling at a section


(b) Give the boundary conditions. [16]

1. A simply supported beam of rectangular section having span 6m, is subjected to


UDL ‘w’ over its whole length. The maximum bending stress is 9.6 N/ mm2 . Find
the depth of the beam, if the maximum deflection is limited to 1/ 1500 of span. E
= 0.15 N/mm2 [16]

2. (a) Explain Beams of constant strength


(b) A cantilever beam of span L with point load at free end is of rectangular cross-
section. Determine the cross-section and draw the beam of constant strength
[16]

3. A continuous beam with one end fixed is supported at B and C and loaded as
shown in figure1. Find the end reactions as well as moments. EI = 2×1013 N/mm2
[16]

4. Find the deflection under the load using castiglino’s theorem for the frame shown
in (figure2) [16]

5. A quarter ring of radius R fixed at A and loaded at free end B by point downward
load P as shown in (figure3). Find the horizontal and vertical deflections at B using

6. A steel bar of rectangular section 120×240 mm is used as a column with both ends
pinned .If the limiting stress is 240N/mm2 and E=2×105 N/mm2 ,

(a) What is the shortest length of the column for which Euler’s theory can apply.
(b) Calculate the safe load if the column is having 4.5m length with factor of
safety 2.
(c) What could be the loads taken by the struts if they are of the square and
circular shape with the same area of cross-section. [16]

transverse UVL ‘w’ per unit length over the entire span
