SONA COLLEGE OF TECHNOLOGY, SALEM-5.

DEPARTMENT OF CIVIL ENGINEERING

ACADEMIC YEAR 2018-2019

U15CE401R STRENGTH OF MATERIALS (II YR/ IV SEM)

TUTORIAL QUESTIONS

1. Derive the Euler’s crippling load for a)both ends hinged b)both ends hinged c)one end fixed
and other end free d)one end fixed and other end hinged. (CO1)

2. A bar of length 4m when used as a SSB and subjected to UDL of 30kN/m over the whole
span deflects 15mm at the centre. Find the EI value for the above beam and hence
determine the crippling loads when it is used as a column with the following end
conditions: a) Both ends pin-jointed b) One end fixed and the other end hinged c) Both
ends fixed. (CO1)

3. Compare the crippling loads given by Euler’s and Rankine’s formulae, for a tubular steel
strut 2.5m long, having outer and inner diameters as 40mm and 30mm respectively, loaded
through pin joints at the ends. Take yield stress as 320N/mm 2, the Rankine’s constant =
1/7500 and E = 2x105 N/mm2. For what length of the strut of this cross section does the
Euler’s formula cease to apply? (CO1)
4. Determine the thickness of hollow cast iron column for the length of 3m and external
diameter 200mm. The load on the column with fixed end supports as 800kN, factor of
safety is 6, and working stress of 90N/mm2 and Rankine’s constant as 1/6400. (CO1)
5. A rectangular column 200x150mm carries a point load of 250 kN and at eccentricity of 10
mm from the minor. Determine the maximum and minimum stresses of the section and
also draw the stress distribution diagram. (CO1)
6. A beam AB of 4m span is simply supported at the ends and is loaded with a point load of 20
kN at 1m from left support and a udl of 20 kN/m for 2m from right support. Determine a)
deflection at centre b) maximum deflection c) slope at both supports. Use Macaulay’s
method. (CO2)
7. Identify the slope at the supports and deflection of the beam shown in figure. Take
E=2x105N/mm2 and I= 20x106 mm4. Use Macaulay’s method.
