of landmarks, such as the desert. Even though wed swear were walking in a straight line, we actually curve around in loops as tight as 66 feet in diameter. German research from the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics reveals why: With every step a walker takes, a small deviation arises in the brains balance (vestibular) or body awareness (proprioceptive) systems. These deviations accumulate to send that individual veering around in ever-tighter circles. But they dont occur when we can recalibrate our sense of direction using a nearby building or mountain, for instance.

The president has signed a disaster declaration for Montana over damage caused by widespread flooding and ice jams early last month. President Barack Obama signed the declaration yesterday that makes federal funding available on a costsharing basis to state and eligible local governments and some private, nonprofit organizations for repair or replacement of facilities damaged by recent flooding. The counties affected are Broadwater, Dawson, Golden Valley, Jefferson, Lake, Musselshell, Park, Pondera, Prairie, Ravalli, Richland, Rosebud, Sanders, Stillwater and Wheatland. Now, isnt it nice that Valley County wasnt included in the above-mentioned counties for a change?

There are some important safe handling methods to remember this time of year when youre decorating, cooking or hiding Easter eggs since eggs are handled a great deal more than usual around Easter. Remember to: Wash your hands thoroughly with hot soapy water and rinse them before handling the eggs when cooking, cooling, dyeing and hiding them. Be sure and inspect the eggs before purchasing them, making sure they are not dirty or cracked. Dangerous bacteria may enter a cracked egg. Store eggs in their original cartons in the refrigerator rather than the refrigerator door. The American Egg Board (AEB) recommends this method for boiling the perfect Easter egg: Place eggs in single layer in saucepan. Add enough tap water to come at least 1 inch above eggs. A tablespoon of vinegar can be added to allow better dye coverage after cooking. Cover pan and quickly bring just to boiling. Turn off heat. If necessary, remove pan from burner to prevent further boiling. Let eggs stand, covered, in the hot water for 15 minutes. Immediately run cold water over eggs or place them in ice water until completely cooled. Store in refrigerator. Use food grade dyes if eggs will be eaten. If youre having an Easter egg hunt, consider hiding places carefully. Avoid areas where the eggs might come into contact with pets, wild animals, birds, reptiles, insects or lawn chemicals. Make sure you find all the eggs youve hidden and then refrigerate them. Discard cracked eggs. As long as the eggs are NOT out of refrigeration over two hours, they will be safe to eat. Do not eat eggs that have been out of refrigeration more than two hours. Refrigerate hard-cooked eggs in their shells and use them within 1 week. If you are planning to use colored eggs as decorations, (for centerpieces, etc.) where the eggs will be out of refrigeration for many hours or several days, discard them after they have served their decorative purpose. Eggs are among the most nutritious foods on earth and can be part of a healthy diet. However, they are perishable just like raw meat, poultry, and fish. Unbroken, clean, fresh shell eggs may contain Salmonella Enteritidis (SE) bacteria that can cause foodborne illness. While the number of eggs affected is quite small, there have been cases of foodborne illness in the last few years. To be safe, eggs must be safely handled, promptly refrigerated, and thoroughly cooked. Salmonella infects eggs through bacteria can be on the outside of a shell egg. Thats because the egg exits the hens body through the same passageway as feces is excreted. Thats why eggs are required to be washed at the processing plant. All USDA graded eggs and most large volume processors follow the washing step with a sanitizing rinse at the processing plant. It is also possible for eggs to become infected by Salmonella Enteritidis fecal contamination through the pores of the shells after theyre laid. SE also can be inside an uncracked, whole egg. Contamination of eggs may be due to bacteria within the hens reproductive tract before the shell forms around the yolk and white. SE doesnt make the hen sick.

Call Shawn Beard 230-1025 statutes pertaining to the handling of wild bison by Fish, Wildlife, and Parks and the Department of Livestock to justify calling the quarantined bison wild. He contended the Legislatures authorization of FWP, to transplant and release wild buffalo or bison onto private or public land in Montana, inherently required confinement of the bison which he claims negated the recent statute that declared confined bison were not wild. However, I maintain that capturing and temporarily holding bison for translocation is in no way comparable to bison that have spent their whole lives in confined captivity. At no time does the Judge address the issue that many of the bison in question were born, raised and bred in captivity and by no stretch of the imagination can they meet any definition of being wild. If the quarantined bison are wild bison as the Judge maintains, then why are they still contained in fenced pastures on the reservations? Why are they not allowed to roam free like the other wildlife on the reservations? I think we know the answers! It is easy to get discouraged considering the setbacks we have experienced. First, Governor Bullocks veto of Mike Langs good bison bill and now Judge McKeons decision that bison born, raised, bred, fed, watered, and repeatedly tested for exposure to diseases, still qualify to be classified as wild bison. However, take heart! The recent decision by FWP to cancel their bison meetings was partially a result of them finally realizing the extent of the opposition to wild bison in eastern Montana. Our thanks go out to all the groups and individuals that wrote letters, emails, posted comments on web sites, etc. They definitely got results! In closing, if you value our unique life style and communities then I urge you to join groups (such as Maltas Montana Community Preservation Association) that are fighting to see they are preserved. ~ Ron Stoneberg (Editors note: Ron Stoneberg lives on a ranch on Timber Creek on the Phillips and Valley County border and has an M.S. in Wildlife Biology.)

An American tourist in Moscow found himself needing to get rid of a large supply of garbage from his recent stay at an apartment. After a long search, he just couldnt find any place to discard of it. So, he just went down one of the side streets to dump it there. Yet, he was stopped by a Moscow police officer, who said, Hey you, what are you doing? I have to throw this away, replied the tourist. You cant throw it away here. Look, follow me, the policeman offered. The police officer led him to a beautiful garden with lots of grass, pretty flowers, and manicured hedges. Here, said the cop, dump all the garbage you want. The American shrugs, opens up the large bags of garbage, and dumps them right on the flowers. Thanks for giving me a place to dump this crap. This is very nice of you. Is this Russian courtesy? asked the tourist. No, says the Ruski, this is the American Embassy.
