Today I received in the mail the
DKG News and was drawn to
two articles, the ones by Dr.
Beverly Helms and Corlea S.
Plowman. It made me stop and
think about the importance of
DKG in my life. As a practicing
teacher, I knew nothing about
the organization. My contact
with Dr. Aschbrenner, in a
different organization, attracted
me to membership and they
chose me. What an honor-they
chose me!
In the beginning I felt totally out

of my comfort zone. My
experience seemed ordinary
compared to others. In my five
years of membership, I have
come to realize that in each
members way, we have
something to give. During my
first year as a member I
attended International in
Spokane. What and experience!
I realized how far reaching and
dynamic the organization is.
Was I intimidated? Somewhat,
but I made the decision to be an
active member. The mix of
practicing educators and retirees

is the best, and our chapter is
proof of that. Retirees bring the
organizations history and a
steady hand. The working
members bring new life and
innovations to the group. The
results are a great mix.
We may not always agree and
we may not all always get
along, but all ideas add to the
fabric of the chapter, and Beta
Delta is a tapestry of which I
am proud to be a part.

Happy New Year Beta Delta!
I would like to present our Beta Delta sisters with a wonderful opportunity to serve in our
community and to support Beta Deltas commitment to supporting intervention services for human
trafficking. Sign up to participate on February 23, 2014, from 9am to 12pm, for Community Serve Day,
through Solana Beach Presbyterian Church, at San Diego Lifeline in Vista. Lifelines mission is to build
self-reliance among youth, individuals, and families through problem solving, skill-building and accessible
community-based services.
After hearing the informative presentation from San Diego Youth Services on human trafficking, I
developed a service project for San Diego Lifeline. This organization, in addition to providing youth and
adult social services, provides human trafficking intervention through Project LIFE, similar to the San
Diego Youth Services program, STARS. Although our service will not be directly related to human
trafficking intervention, it will support the organization as a whole. In speaking with their Volunteer
Program Coordinator, their need is to have the exterior of one of their buildings painted.

What is a MOOC? MOOC stands for
massive open online course. These are
typically free courses open to anyone. Many
are taught by professors from top-notch
universities. Several thousand students can
participate at once, learning about a variety of
topics via videos or readings. Students are not
required to submit assignments or take exams.
On the downside, students do not interact or
receive grades, credit, or feedback from
professors. Interested? Check out
www.coursera.com to see a listing of free,
upcoming classes. Im signed up to take a six-
week class about the music of the Beatles,
taught by a professor from University of
Rochester. If you prefer something else, there
are courses about Roman architecture and
