    The past continuous tense is commonly used for actions which were going on (had not
    finished) at a particular time in the past. This tense can also refer to a habit in the past,
    which corresponds to the English used to.

    • Kahvaltı yapıyordum.
    • Serhat ders çalışıyordu.

    Structure: verb + -i, -ı, -u, -ü, + yordu + personal pronoun ending

    Use:
    1- Verbs ending in a syllable having -i or -e are followed by iyordu and personal
    pronoun ending:

    Eve geliyordum. (I was coming home.)

    2- Verbs ending in a syllable having -ı or -a are followed by ıyordu and personal


    pronoun ending:

    Leyla dün gece ders çalışıyordu. (Leyla was studying last night.)
    Babam bana her gün çikolata alıyordu. (My father used to buy chocolate for me.)

    3- Verbs ending in a syllable having -o or -u are followed by uyordu and personal


    pronoun ending:

    Ahmet, iki saat önce parkta koşuyordu. (Ahmet was running in the park two hours
    ago.)

    4- Verbs ending in a syllable having -ö or -ü are followed by üyordu and personal


    pronoun ending:

    Arkadaşım tatilden dönüyordu. (My friend was returning from holiday.)

    5- If a verb ends in -e, we drop -e and replace it by -i or -ü followed by yordu and


    personal pronoun ending:

    Durakta bekliyorduk. (We were waiting at the bus stop.)


    Ayşe şarkı söylüyordu. (Ayşe was singing.)

    6- If a verb ends in -a, we drop -a and replace it by -ı or -u followed by yordu and


    personal pronoun ending:

    Ahmet kalemini arıyordu. (Ahmet was looking for his pencil.)


    Çocuklar top oynuyorlardı. (The children were playing football.)
