CourseObjectives:
1. Familiarizethestudentwithlaboratorytestingequipmentusedinexperimentalmechanics.
2. Uselaboratoryequipmenttodemonstratethemechanicalbehaviorofcommonengineeringmaterialsand
mechanisms.
3. Developcomputerbasedmodelstodescribethetheoreticalbehaviorofmechanisms.

4. Analyzeexperimentaldataandcorrelateexperimentalresultstotheoreticalmodels.
5. Enhancetechnicalreportwritinganddatapresentationskills.
CoursePolicies:
Attendance
Itisthestudentsresponsibilitytoattendlectureandusethecoveredmaterialinlabreports.
Labattendanceismandatory.Ifyoumustmissalaboratoryforfamilyemergencyorillness,youmustarrange
tomakeupthelabwiththeinstructororTAbeforethelaboratorybegins.Ifthesearrangementsarenot
made,youwillnotbeabletomakeupthelaboratoryandwillreceiveazeroforthislaboratory.Therewill
benomakeuplabsessions.
LecturesareavailableonlineonDrexelLearn.
Grading
EachexperimenthasaPreLabthatmustbecompletedbeforethelabsession.ThePreLabassignment
isintheLabManual.
Labreportsmustbewrittenfollowingtheprescribedformat.Refertothesampleprovided.
Labreportsareduetheweekafterthelabiscompleted.Theymustbehandedintothelaboratory
instructoratthebeginningofthelabsession.
Alabreportsubmittedaftertheduedatewilllose5pointsforeachdayitislate.
Termgradeisbasedonlabreportscores(includesprelaboratoryassignmentsubmittedpriortoperforming
experiment),classparticipation,andlectureattendance.Thereisnofinalexam.
Overallgrade:100%experimentalcomponentwhichincludesthelaboratoryreports.
Prelab(PL):20%; Experiment/LabReport(LR):80%.
LaboratoryStructure:
Foralllabsessionsstudentsaredividedintogroupsoffour(4)studentspergroup.
Youkeepthesamegroupfortheentireterm.

1. Abstract(5pts):Ashortdescriptionofwhatwasdoneandthemajorresult(s)andconclusion(s).The
followingquestionsshouldbeansweredintheabstract:Whatwereyoutryingtofindoutbydoingthe
experiment?Whatdidyoudointheexperiment?Whatwereyourresults?Asentenceortwoforeach
questionisenough.
2. Introduction(10pts):Thissectiontellsthereaderwhyyoudidtheexperiment.Itincludessomeorallof
thefollowing:backgroundinformation,possibleresultsbasedontheory,and/oranexplanationofany
difficultiesyouthoughtyouwouldencounterinitially.Whenthereaderfinishesreadingthe
introduction,sheshouldknowwhattoexpectinthereport.
3. ExperimentalProcedure(10pts):Thissectiondescribesyourprocedureinenoughdetailthatsomeone
elsewithyourlevelofexperiencecouldrepeattheexperiment.Yourdescriptionmustbequantitative,
suchastoinclude:thematerialsyouused,howtosetuptheexperiment,howtheexperimentwasrun.
4. Results(20pts):Inthissectionyoupresentthedatafromyourexperiment.Youmayusetablesand/or
figurestopresenttheresults,butyoushoulddescribeanyrelevantfeaturesoftheresultscompletely
withinthetext,referringthereadertotheappropriatetableorfigureasnecessary.Keepinmindthat
tablesareusefulwhenthereaderwantstoknowtheexactnumericalvalueofaresult,whilegraphsare
usefulforshowingtrends.Bothtablesandfiguresshouldbenumberedsequentially,andeachshould
haveadescriptivetitle.

5. Discussion(25pts):Thisisthesectionwhereyouexplaintothereaderthesignificanceoftheresults
youpresentedabove.Yourdiscussionwillincludesomeorallofthefollowing:comparisonbetween
yourresultstoothersintheclass,evaluationofhowyourdatasupportorrefuteyouroriginal
hypothesis,futureapplicationofinformation/skillslearned,andanalysisofpossiblesourcesoferror.
6. Conclusions(10pts):Thisisabriefsummaryofthemainconclusion(s),generallyusedwhenthe
Discussionsectionisparticularlylong.
