Event Ad
Description:

Using only a scanner and Microsoft Word create a

full-bleed color event ad to promote a fundraiser.

Date:

May 17, 2014

Course/Instructor:

Comm 130 Section 04/Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:

Microsoft Word
Fuji Film Finepix S6800 Camera
Epson V600 Photo Scanner
PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter)

Objectives:

Comprehend image sizing

Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for your message
and audience.
Use only Microsoft Word design features without using any
Adobe programs, including Photoshop

Process:

With the Design Principles in mind, I looked for an area in my

garden that would use the rule of thirds, a good color scheme, good
lighting and a good focal point to take a picture. I downloaded it to
my computer printed it at the local Walgreens. The photo was not
edited at all, it is the original image taken and printed 810. I then
scanned the photo on the Spori Epson V600 Photo Scanner, opened
it in Photoshop and saved it as a jpeg image at 150 ppi with a pixel
height of 1518 and width of 1200. I inserted it into Microsoft Word
and added the typography. I and added a purple drop shadow which
I sampled from the tulip in the background and placed it behind the
tan font. It was a challenge to get the words on the rock to show up
so I color sampled the white from the flowers and put it in my swatch
pallet. I then sampled the green from the tulip leaves and used that
as the drop shadow for the white font. I then printed it as a full
bleed document on 11 x 17 paper and trimmed the edges. I then
made a PDF of my ad and converted it to a jpeg using the
PDF2JPG.net (PDF converter).

Brochure
Description:

A two sided (duplex) folding brochure.

Date:

July 13, 2014

Course/Instructor:

Comm 130 Section 04/Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop
Adobe InDesign
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.

Create an original company logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate quality images. One should be clipped in
Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so the text
follows the cutout shape of the image.
Write at least 250 words of original copy with at least three
paragraphs, headers, and subheaders.
Trim for a full bleed and print in duplex (two-sided) color.

Process:

I began in Adobe Illustrator by creating a new logo. I drew a

picture of a leaf and used the ellipse tool and the pen tool
to create points in the leaf and the small tomato. I placed
it between the words Simply Fresh using Great Vibes as my
font. I created an 11 x 17 document in Adobe Indesign and
set up my ruler guides. I added a scallop at the top for a
trim line. I placed the logo in the document and images I
had saved and edited in Adobe Photoshop. I took out the
backgrounds from the imaages by using a layer mask. I
used text wrap for the images I wanted body copy around.
I put in my titles, headers, subheaders and paragraphs
by using the paragraph option which made everything
uniform in font size, type, and placement of paragraphs. I
used a light green for the back of the menu as a clean, crisp
white space. I printed it at Alpha Graphics, trimmed and
folded it using a bone folder. Then I cut the scalloped edge
while it was folded to create a uniform edge.

Course/Instructor:

Comm 130 Section 04/Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Text Wrangler
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Size and optimize an original logo as a .png for a web page.

Write content to describe the process of creating a logo
and how it appeals to a target audience.
Design a web page using HTML to display a logo and content.
Acquire a working knowledge of HTML and a basic
understanding of CSS.
Identify hex colors for web design.
Compress multiple files in a zipped folder to attach as one file.

Process:

I used an HTML and a CSS document to create a web page. I

first wrote the content for the web page in the HTML document.
I used adobe Photoshop to size my logo and place it in the
HTML document. I then sized and place it in the CSS document
by creating padding. The background was created with a
seamless image of wood grain and placing it in a Photoshop,
changed the saturation and colored it the red from the logo. I
took the body and changed the radius and padding to create a
circle and added a drum skin image. I changed the color of the
border of the circle to match the orange in the logo. I changed
the font in the h2 header of the CSS and colored it the red from
the logo. I realigned the paragraphs and changed the color to
the brick from the logo. I added a bullet list and colored that
brick as well. I learned how to validate HTML and CSS with
w3c validation. You can Google how to do things in HTML and
CSS and there is wonderful information on the http://www.
w3schools.com website.

Logos
Description:

Design three different variations of

logos for the same company.

Date:

June 7, 2014

Course/Instructor:

Comm 130 Section 04/Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Create a variety of logos to fit a company or personal image.

Learn to use the basic tools in Adobe Illustrator.

Process:

I drew the drum stick and cymbal using the rectangle and
ellipse tool and used variations throughout all three designs.
I created the bottom logo first by using a font called Great
Vibes. I created a hi-hat cymbal for the cross in the letter t
and then fit it all together. I drew the drum using a variety
of ellipses and rounded rectangles. I used a complementary
color scheme of indigo and gold to color the drum, sticks
and cymbal and used the Harrington font for the rest of
the lettering. For the middle logo I incorporated the drum
from the top by changing the size, color and angle of the
drum. I created yarn mallets for the letter i and Lucinda
Handwriting font for the letter s. I used the Quicksand font
and made a large R, then cut off part of the bottom and
extended it to create the letter t. Using the shape builder
tool, I placed a rectangle in the middle and cut it out for
space between the R and the t. I placed a flat ellipse
for a cymball at an angle to create the t. I then took it to
the percussion ensemble class and had them vote for their
favorite design. They liked the middle one best.

Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn basic photography skills.

Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those colors,
then incorporate the colors into the layout.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then download it.
Adjust image levels, saturation, color balance, sharpen tool on
separate layers for NDE (non-destructive editing.)
Size and crop the image, then place on an 8.511 page layout.
Use layers to design text, and repeating elements in Photoshop.
Print with full-bleed margins. Trim to 1/8 on all four sides.

Process:

The morning sunshine coming through the window at the right

angle captured the shadow of the cats reflection. I adjusted the
lighting levels and the focus to make sure her reflection would
be in the image. I opened the image in Adobe Photoshop and
adjusted the levels to create a good balance of light. I sharpened
parts of the image; whiskers, fur around her head, etc. I adjusted
the saturation, and color balance to brighten the colors. Then I
design an 8.511 layout, copied my photo and started creating my
design. I sampled the teal from the wall for the background color.
I used the lasso tool to convert the picture to an ellipse, added
another layer and adjusted the opacity, then added it as a drop
shadow behind the first ellipse. I added a third layer and colored
matched the brick from the cedar chest, lightened it and added it
between the original photo text, and repeating design elements. I
added a third ellipse behind the drop shadow to help the opacity.
The text was added next along with a drop shadow. I then color
matched the words brick and teal along with their swatches.

Business Card
Description:

Create a logo and then design business card using that logo.

Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:

Create a new logo to fit a company or personal image.

Design consistent layouts for a business card and letterhead.
Use the basic tools of Adobe Illustrator and InDesign.

Process:

I used Adobe Illustrator to create a logo that looked like an

old book. I color sampled the colors from a photo of an old
book to get my colors. I used the pen tool to create the book
and the shapes for the pages. I then used the rectangle tool to
create the computer and the shapes that were in it. I took the
corners of the computer and used the direct selection tool to
create live corners so I could round them. I outlined the strokes
to make the keyboard for the computer. I created an InDesign
document and used rectangles that were 2 x 3.5 for a business
card and placed the logo into it. I found a background from
subtlepatterns.com and placed it into the document. I created
the business title and the company information with Microsoft
Sans Serif. I then made a decorative line to go on either sides
of the card. I put the title on the front of the card and the
watermark on the back with the line elements on both the front
and the back. Then I placed the companys contact information
on the back of the card.

Montage
Description:

Create an inspirational montage by using a layer mask to blend

images by using two or more images, and use good typography.

Date:

May 31, 2014

Course/Instructor:

Comm 130 Section 04/Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:

Learn to manage Photoshop layers.

Learn to blend images together smoothly, using masks.
Use filters.
Apply appropriate typography.

Process:

first took the image of the rose bush thorns and cropped it.
I found a mountain climber image and used the lasso tool to
move him into my Photoshop document. I then added a layer
mask onto him and blended out the background. I rotated the
climber so he would be the right angle to fit on the thorn. I
placed an image of a canyon into Photoshop. I recolored it so it
would contrast with the stem. I did this by adding a brightness/
contrast layer, a vibrance layer, a hue/saturation layer and a
color layer. I added a layer mask to the rose bush thorn layer
so I could blend the canyon into the background. I took the
gargoyle and added a layer mask and took out the background
using a hard brush. I used a soft brush at low opacity to blend it
into the mountain. I added a layer mask to the snake image and
a color layer then changed the rotation to fit it into the head of
the river at the bottom of the canyon. I used the same masking
technic as before, using a soft brush to gently fade it into the
background so it would appear to be biting at the mountain
climbers heel. I placed the quote in the document and puppet
warped the letter C in courage to add contrast.

Flier

Black and white promotional fier for a

graduate leadership conference.

Date:

Course/Instructor:

Comm 130 Section 04/Cory Kerr

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Indesign

Objectives:

Apply the design principles and

use appropriate typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to
improve basic flier layout.
Retrieve image and logo from links provided.
Create a project folder with image, logo and InDesign
document to keep links in InDesign intact.

Process:

After creating several sketches I selected one as a guide

to create a layout in Adobe InDesign. In the sketch there
were stairs at the top and the bottom of the design. After
adding other elements; the body copy, photo, title, etc.
To tie in the title and body copy better the shape at the
ceiling was added. There is use of alignment in the body
copy by wrapping the text around the stairs. The O in
October aligns with the top of the door knob. The logo
on the door emphasizes that their business is at the top
of the industry and after attending the conference the
graduate will descend the stairs with a competitive edge
in business. The stairs were also used as repetition in the
design.
