How to Use IMDG Emergency Fire and Spill Codes [IMDG Code 3.2.1]
Transportation
The Dangerous Goods List in the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code
contains emergency schedule information (EmS). EmS codes are in column 15 of the
Dangerous Goods List and refer to a fire schedule (e.g., "F-A" for General Fire Schedule) and a
spillage schedule (e.g., "S-A" for Toxic Substances) included in emergency response
procedures identified in the IMDG Code Supplement--a separate volume that accompanies
IMDG Code Volumes 1 and 2.
If the EmS code is underlined for a substance, material, or article, this indicates additional
information is provided in the emergency response procedures.
For dangerous goods offered under n.o.s. entries or other generic entries, appropriate
emergency response procedures may vary from the EmS codes listed. In these cases, shippers
should provide EmS codes based on the chemical properties of the material being shipped
instead of providing the EmS codes indicated by the Dangerous Goods List.
To find an assigned EmS code, first look up the material by ID number on the Dangerous
Goods List. Next, find the two EmS codes included in column 15--one code for fire and one
code for spills. Then, consult the index in the first section of the IMDG Code Supplement to look
up the EmS codes and the corresponding page numbers where the emergency response
information is located.
The following tables identify the EmS fire and spill codes used in the Dangerous Goods List.

When shipping by vessel, you may list the emergency schedule information on a transport
document (shipping paper) to fulfill DOT's requirement to include emergency response
information with dangerous goods shipments, as long as your driver and vessel operator have a
copy of the corresponding information from the IMDG Code Supplement.

Resource Center's International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code Webcast or
