of H2 at s.t.p.
(RAM: O = 16.0; Mg = 24.3; 1 mol of gas occupies 22.4 dm

at s.t.p.)
a) Write the chemical equation between Mg and HCl(aq).
b) Write the chemical equation between MgO and HCl(aq).
c) Calculate number of moles HCl(aq) used in the reactions.
d) Calculate mass of Mg in the sample.
e) Calculate the number of moles of HCl(aq) reacted with MgO.
f) Calculate the mass of MgO in the sample.
g) Calculate the % by mass of magnesium oxide in the sample.
11) Magnesium is given an atomic number of 12.
a) Sketch a graph to show the successive ionization energy for all the electrons in
magnesium. Indicate the ionization energies of the valence electrons, and of the
filled inner shells. Indicate also the huge quantum jump of ionization energies
expected.
b) When magnesium is burnt in air, a white powder is left. When some water is added
to the white powder and the solution tested with red litmus, a blue colour is seen.
Explain all observations and write chemical equations for the reactions involved.
