1.
Tisand (Pty) Ltd (RBM) placed an order on Blue Cube Systems (Pty) Ltd ("BCS") to do an
amenability study for the potential installation of Blue Cube MQi Mineral Quantifiers at the primary
concentrator operations of RBM.
This report, on the results achieved from the samples sent by RBM for evaluation, is fulfilling that
obligation.
2.
EXECUTIVE SUMMARY
Four mineral sample sets including their laboratory analyses were received from RBM.
The results of the optical scanner tests, the creation of calibration files and the interpretation of the
results are covered.
Most components can be measured with potential benefits being recognised. Excellent results
were achieved for THM, EHM, MAGS, MO and Ilmenite. In addition, usable results were also
achieved for NM, Leucoxene and Zircon. The weakest results were obtained for MAGN, Altered
ilmenite and Rutile.
Recommendations are made and a project time scale is proposed.

3.
SAMPLES RECEIVED
54 Samples in four sample sets were received from RBM in good order. The following three
samples were too small to be analysed with the MQi Universal Spot Mineral Quantifier: MPC9,
MPD18 and MPE10. The samples and their analyses as received from RBM, are listed in
Annex A.
4.
TESTING PROCEDURE
All the samples were scanned on a Blue Cube MQi Universal Spot Mineral Quantifier.
samples were loaded after adding 10% of water per weight to the dry samples
The
The scanning sequence was set at six 20-second scans per sample and the optical data was then
processed with the MQi software. The first and last values from each scan were ignored and the
remaining 4 were averaged for the interpretation of the results.
For each scan, the optical data was matched with the reference values as provided by RBM, and a
calibration file was created for each of the four mineral groups.
The calibration file so created, was then used to predict the composition of the same set of
samples.
There were adequate differences in the optical data to obtain an acceptable calibration line for the
sample set. There were enough samples to minimise (but not eliminate) the matrix effects,
therefore the outcome was positive.
Lastly, 49 usable sample results from all 4 groups were combined and 49 separate calibration files
were created using 48 samples, in each case leaving out the data from a different sample. Each
calibration file so created, was then used to predict the composition of the left out sample.
Therefore the ability of the technology to predict an unseen sample was tested. Again the results
were positive for some mineral components.
5.
ASSESSMENT OF FIT
For the sample set, the reference values and Blue Cube MQi determined values were matched in
pairs. The correlation coefficient (CC) between the reference values and the predicted values
were then calculated. The statistical standard deviation (SD) of the differences were also
calculated. Ideally, if the SD of the differences is zero, there will be a perfect match and the CC will
be 1. In reality, reference values are subject to variation and the sample being used for
assessment is never identical to the reference sample. There will always be some differences
between the reference values and the test values.
If the differences are small relative to the measurement range, a high confidence level can be
attached to the test result but when the measurement range is smaller, the same differences will be
much more significant. To create more meaning to the evaluation of tests, an assessment
parameter, called a Confidence Index was introduced.
The Confidence Index (CI) is the ratio between:
the SD of the differences between the reference values and the test values of the same sample
and the range of the reference values; (Maximum value Minimum value)
The CI is a good indication of the resolution in relation to the actual measuring range at that
location. A value above 5 is useful and above 10 is strong.

In the following tables, the measurement range, the SD, the CC, the CI and the fit R-square values
are all listed.
The 4 sample sets provided the following results (See Annex B for complete results):
5.1 MPA
The statistical results are given in Table 1 and graphically in Figures 1 to 11. The linkage between
spectral and analytical data for sample MPA8 however did not match the pattern of linkage
between the other samples in the set and was thus not used in creating a calibration file.

Comment: For all the components, the CIs and the CCs indicate that good results can be
expected when a MQi unit will be applied to quantify the mineral stream.

Next an unique calibration file was created for each sample received by using all the other
samples. Thus creating an independent calibration file with which values for the excluded sample
were predicted. Two samples shows analysis values far removed from the rest, and had to be
disregarded for this test, namely MPC_NO11 and MPE_N08. The statistical results are given in
Table 5 and graphically in Figure 45. See Annex C for the complete list of predicted values.

CONCLUSION
Excellent results were achieved for THM, EHM, MAGS, MO and Ilmenite. In addition, usable
results were also achieved for NM, Leucoxene and Zircon. The weakest results were obtained for
MAGN, Altered ilmenite and Rutile.
8.
RECOMMENDATION
Against the background of strong results obtained, especially for THM and EHM, BCS has no
hesitation to recommend that RBM consider the installation of Blue Cube MQi In-line Wet Mineral
Quantifiers, to realise the financial benefits of well informed process control as soon as possible
We propose that BCS be commissioned to design, supply and install a Mineral Quantifier in each
primary concentrator plant of RBM. By controlling the concentrator grade, concentrator recovery
can be continuously maximised while producing a heavy mineral concentrate with an acceptable,
stable grade.

GENERAL
The stated program can be firmed up as soon as RBM is prepared to place a firm order. As an
alternative, it is also feasible to stage the project progressively and to install the MQi units one at a
time. The impact will be a delay of payment, but at the cost of additional expenses and also,
delayed gain of the benefits.
Please revert to us if you should have any further questions or suggestions.
Thank you for the opportunity to be honoured by your order for this amenability study.
Please be assured of our best efforts at all time.
