1PopulistMovement
Thepopulistswereinfavorofthefreecoinageofsilver,astheysawitasawayforthe
commonpeopletogetoutofdebt.
Theyhadmanygoalsinlife,whichincludedtheshorteningofworkhoursand
regulationofrailroads.
Populismwasreallyonlyconsideredinthewest,wherethemajorityoffarmersand
theirfamilieslived.
Republicansweretheonesagainstthepopulists,fortheybelievedthebestroutewas
tokeepgoldthestandardbackingforcurrency.Theyalsowereagainstthepopulists
becauseoftheirbusinesses.Itwasexactlywhatthepopulistsopposed.

2GoldStandard
Goldstandardiswhenthecurrencythroughoutasystem,likeintheU.S.,isbackedby
gold.Sotheamountofpapercurrencyintheworldisasmuchgoldasthebankshave
stored.
Inthelate1800stheRepublicansseemedtobetheonlypeoplereallyadvocatingfor
thegoldstandard.
Thepopulistsweretheonemajorgroupwhoseverelyopposedthegoldstandardas
theythoughtsilverwasthebetterroutetogo.
Thepopulistsdidhavepointwiththeirsilverstandardinsteadofgoldseeingasthough
theamountofgoldavailablewasdwindlingdowntonearnothingandsilverwas
plentiful.
3SocialismandCapitalism
Capitalistsdonotbelievethegovernmentshouldgetinvolved.Theybelievethe
economyshouldberanbythepeople.
Socialistsbelievethereshouldbelittlegovernmentinterventionandthateverything
doneshouldbeforthegoodofsociety.
Bothstancesaddressthebettermentofsocietyandthesmallestinvolvementof
governmentasnecessary.
Socialistssawcapitalismasabadformofgovernmentandcapitalistssawsocialism
asabadformofgovernment.Therereallywasnothingtodotoswaytheiropinionsso
peoplehadtodealwithwhatwashappening.
4TheDepression
Thedepressionwasbadtimeforall,aseveryonewentintodebtanditwasimpossible
togetoutofitsincethebankskeptjackingprices.
Itwasadominoeffect,ifafarmerfellintoadepressedconditionandwasntableto
farmasmanycrops,itinturnedaffectedtherailroads,andsoon.
Becauseoftheeverslowlydecliningeconomy,anewmarketplacecameaboutin
America.

Thedepressionwasabadtimeforallpeopleandespeciallythelowertomiddleclass
workersthatworkedintheindustrialbusiness.Theyhadstrikesuponstrikesand
someeventurnedviolent
5ProgressiveIssues
Therewasstillalotofdiscriminationbetweenracesandevenbetweengenders.Many
africanamericanswerestillfightingtotryandJimCrowlaws.
Educationwasbecomingmoreandmoreprominentandeventuallyeventhe
introductionofsocialsciencesbecameathing.
Womenwerestillfightingashardasevertomakeknownthe19thamendmentand
maketheirindependencebecomeareality.
Theonlypeopleopposingtheseideasarethewhitesupremacistsandthosewhoare
racist.OneinparticularmayhavebeenTeddyRoosevelt.
6Electionof1896
Twomajorcandidates,WilliamJenningsBryanandWilliamMcKinley.Theyhadtwo
differentapproachestothewaytheyweretocampaign.
WilliamBryanspentmostofhistimetravelingfromplacetoplaceandspeakingin
frontoflargecrowds,tryingtomakehimselfknown.
WilliamMcKinleysatathomeandgotsponsorsandendorsementsworthmillions.He
wasabletodefeatBryanbecauseofhisfundingandbecausehewasratherpopular.
ManybelievethatBryanshouldhavewonbuthewasunsuccessfulbecauseofhis
lackofabilitytosecureanynortheasternstatevotesandbecausehewasinfavorof
thesilvercoinageprocess.Manyfearedthesilvercoinagebecausetheythoughtit
wouldhelpandhurtthepeoplewhoneededitmost.
