Density and specific gravity are both ways of describing the weight (mass) of certain
quantity of material. They are useful in determining yield and comparing different materials. The
main difference is that density has units and specific gravity does not. Due to that specific
gravity is determined by dividing the density of a material by the density of an equal volume of
water using the same units. The units therefore cancel each other out also density is the
measure of the amount of mass per volume, while specific gravity is a measure of
density relative to the density of a reference substance. Specific gravity is also called relative
density. The reference material could be anything, but the most common reference is pure
water.

3. A pycnometer weighs 50.00g. When filled with water, it weighs 100.00 g. When filled with oil,
it weighs 94.00g. Determine the specific gravity of the oil?
A.Mass of pycnometer= 50.00g
B.Mass of pycnometer w/ water= 100.00g
C.Mass of pycnometer w/ oil= 94.00 g
Specific Gravity of the liquid= (C-A)/ (B-A)
= (94.00g-50.00g)/ (100.00g-50.00g)
Specific Gravity of Oil = 0.8800
4. An insoluble powder weighs 12.00g. A pycnometer, weighing 21.00 g when empty, weighs
121.00 g when filled with water. When the powder is introduced into the emptied pycnometer,
and the pycnometer is filled with water, the three together weigh 130.00g. What is the specific
gravity of the powder?
A. Mass of pycnometer= 21.00g
B. Mass of pycnometer w/ water= 121.00g
C. Mass of powder= 12.00g
D. Mass of pycnometer w/ powder and water= 130.00g
Mass of displaced liquid = (B-A)-(D-C+A)
= (121.00g-21.00g)-(130.00g-12.00g-21.00g)
=100.00g-97.00g
=3.00g
Specific Gravity = 12.00g/3.00g
Specific Gravity=4.00
