unaccompanied piece & 10/10 for sight-reading
SPELLING BEE
An expectant hush fell across the Lecture Theatre on
Friday. Twelve finalists were whittled down to two in a
sudden death, no holds barred fight to the finish. The
First Annual St Bede's Spelling Bee culminated in an
absolute nail-biter. Descartes Hal Hewlett (Year 7) and
Peter Savery (Year 8) from Pasteur were the last men
standing in a penalty shoot-out with words. It went right
down to the wire but eventually Hal was victorious,
confirming his victory with the correct spelling of
"obsequious".
It was a magnificent effort. Huge congratulations to Hal
and all of our Word Warriors.
SCHOOL GAMES BATH Wednesday 2nd July
22 schools competed in the County Finals last week, with
St Bedes being the most represented school. With 6

The teams put in an excellent display in the Athletics:
Year 7 Boys
3rd place
Year 8 Boys
2nd place
Year 8 Girls
3rd place
Year 9 Boys
5th place
Year 9 Girls
3rd place
Year 10 Boys
2nd place
The Tennis team finished 2nd after a tie break and the
Year 7 rounders team finished as Champions ending the
sporting year on a high.
CLIFTON DIOCESE PILGRIMAGE WALK
Last Thursday 3rd July, a group of Year 7 and 8 pupils
travelled to Gloucestershire to join other Catholic
Secondary schools from across the Diocese. The day
began with Mass in Tetbury celebrated by Bishop Declan
and then a lovely walk around the grounds of
Westonbirt. With glorious weather it was a peaceful and
enjoyable Pilgrimage.

DUKE OF EDINBURGH EXPEDITION 5th-6th July

This proved to be a very
successful trip with 19 year ten
pupils completing the
expedition phase of their
Bronze award. Map reading
and navigation skills where
fully tested as the pupils made
their way through the
Mendips. The pupils had to
cope with all four seasons
during the weekend from
torrential rain to glorious sunshine.

NATIONAL U19 NETBALL FINALS

Congratulations to Year 9 pupil Natasha Soodeen who
played for the South West
Under 19 Netball team at Ilford
Arena, Essex last weekend.
Natasha, who plays Goal Attack,
scored 8 goals against the
Yorkshire team which secured
their victory of 14-13. Well done.

JOHN LEWIS DESIGN COMPETITION

Congratulations to Year 9 pupil Harriet Selway who has
been selected as a finalist for the 150 Years of John
Lewis competition. Finalists were selected by Stuart
Hillard from the TV programme the Great British Sewing
Bee who will be judging the finished cushions to select
an overall winner.
Finalists from schools all over Bristol will spend two days
in the store during the summer holidays making their
cushion.
My design for John Lewis shows the difference from
where they started 150 years ago, to where they are
now. I am looking forward to making my cushion in store
and seeing it on display. Good Luck Harriet!

PAST PUPIL SUCCESS

Congratulations to past pupil German Marquesini (20012006) who has graduated at the University of
Westminster with a Bachelor of Arts Honours in Business

this was their first ever experience of playing golf and
the day was enjoyed by all. The schools that attended

POEM OF THE WEEK

I love all films that start with rain:
rain, braiding a windowpane
or darkening a hung-out dress
or streaming down her upturned face;
one long thundering downpour
right through the empty script and score
before the act, before the blame,
before the lens pulls through the frame
to where the woman sits alone
beside a silent telephone
or the dress lies ruined on the grass
or the girl walks off the overpass,
and all things flow out from that source
along their fatal watercourse.
However bad or overlong
such a film can do no wrong,

Stationary means not moving.
Stationery is writing or office supplies (e.g., paper, pens).

ESAFETY TIP
Be aware of how long your child spends online. It is
recommended that children do not have more than 2
hours a day screen time. A study by Bristol University
found a link between 2 plus hours screen time and
increased emotional and behavioural problems.
