Bixby Knolls Christian Church, (Disciples of Christ) (562) 426-0428

Dear Church,
This week I watched a
pair of documentaries on
Netflix. I Am is a film by director Tom Shadyac about
how people can find meaning
and happiness in their lives
(and save the world at the
same time). From this film I
learned that the human brain
responds to the sight of
someone else in pain as if
ones own body were experiencing that pain itself. For
example, if you watch someone stub their toe on a table
leg, the neurons in your brain
react the same as if it had
been your toe.
I experienced this first

while

watching

the

other film, Mile Mile and a

Half. It was about a group of
friends who spent a month
hiking the John Muir Trail. In
one scene, a hiker jumps into
a snow-fed Sierra lake. As
soon as I saw his body hit the
water, I noticed my own body
give a slight twitch. In that
moment, my brain remembered the times I myself had
jumped into a cold Sierra
lake, and the neurons in my
brain reacted as if my own
body was submerged in that
frigid water.
This demonstrates the
powerful connections we as

humans share. The pain of

Stewardship Moment
"What's yours is mine," some people say,
"and I want to steal it."
"What's mine is mine," some people say,
"and I want to keep it."
"What's mine is God's," we are learning
to say, "and I want to use it for the common
good." We call that attitude stewardship.

Just a Coffee Note!

Coffee? Notes? What does the music director have to
do with coffee? We heard she doesnt even drink coffee!
About 18 months ago we started a new coffee ministry. Funds were donated and the machine, and coffee
supplies were purchased. Since I was the one who
suggested this I felt the need to implement and run
this service until we decided if we wanted it to stay or
not. Over the course of the last 6 months various people have stated that they like this coffee service and
the variety it supplies us.

Now is your chance to do some basic volunteering!

We need a coffee person. Their responsibilities will be
to fill water and set up the coffee and supplies each
week and to clean up after coffee hour and return the
cart to the choir room! I will still be happy to purchase the supplies (cups, coffee, syrups, creamers
etc.) and house the machine under lock and key in the
choir room. With so many renters we feel this is a
necessity.
So if you attend church regularly, and can commit to
at least 3 Sundays per month, then you are the coffee
person!!! It is easy to get someone (me) to fill in for a
volunteer occasionally, and other people will help too.
So lets step forward with our coffee ministry. You
just never know if you can do something until you try!
