The major crop cultivated in the study area are mostly Cotton (Gossypium herbaceum) and vegetables
and in some area Castor (Ricinus communis), Wheat (Triticum aestivum), Bajra (Pennisetum
glaucum), and other crops like Mung (Phaseolus aureus), Til (Sesamum indicum), Guar (Cyamopsis
tetragonalobus). Water for agriculture is essentially from bore wells which draw water from upto 700
feet (~213 m) and Narmada Canal waters through the Sujalam Sufalam and Narmada Yojana schemes
respectively.
Mehsana District
The major crops cultivated are Wheat, Bajra, Jowar and other crops like Cotton and Castor in some
areas. Also the species crops i.e. Mustard which are abundant in Visnagar and Unjha talukas also
Jeera & Chilly are abundant in Mahesana taluka. Some portion of Vijapur taluka in study area had
Potato crops. Agriculture here is through bore wells which abstract groundwater from a range
between 400 to 1000 feet (~123 m 305 m) and the Narmada Canal.
Patan District
The major crops cultivated are castor, mustard, & cotton also other crops grown are jira, bajra, wheat,
jowar for fodder and fennel. In some area pulses like Mung, Tuver, Arad, Guwar and vegetables.
Water for agriculture is sourced from Narmada Canal or bore wells whose depth ranges from 400 to
1000 feets.
Ahmedabad District
In this region the major crop cultivated were, Wheat, Jowar, Bajra and other crops like Castor, Cotton.
Also the spices like Jeera, Mustard and Chilly. The irrigation is essentially through the ground water.
Plantation
The plantation class covered 69 sq.km. of land covering more in Gandhinagar and the part of Mehsana
district specifically stretch from Mehsana to Kadi Taluka.
The plantation were mostly of Chikoo (Manilkara zapota), Lemon (Citrus limonum), Amla (Emblica
officinalis), and Mango (Mangifera indica).

The proportional presence of different land uses and land cover in terms of statistical percentages was
derived for the study area. Appropriate legends were used to represent the various categories of land
use and land cover, and were then written on the prepared land use and land cover maps.
This concluded the landuse identification and description component of the study.
The images classified into the above-mentioned classes for different regions of interest are given in
Photographs 4-1.

Meteorology
The climate of this region is characterized by a hot summer and general dryness except in the
southwest monsoon season. The year may be divided into four seasons. The cold season from
December to February is followed by the hot season from March to middle of June. The period from
middle of June to September is the southwest monsoon season. October and November constitute
the post-monsoon or retreating monsoon season.
4.4.1
The interpretation of climatic data is based on the long-term climatological tables (1961 1990)
published by Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) and the climatological interpretations provided
in the District Gazetteer of Ahmedabad (Published in 1984). A copy of the long-term climatological
data is enclosed as Annexure 2.
Temperature
The period from March to May is one of continuous increase in temperatures. May is generally the
hottest month with a mean daily maximum temperature of about 41.7C and mean daily minimum of
about 26.2C. The weather is intensely hot in summer and on some days the day temperature may
reach up to 45C. The highest temperature recorded at Ahmedabad is 47.8C on 27th May 1916.
From November, both day and night temperatures begin to decrease rapidly. January is generally the
coldest month with the mean daily maximum temperature at about 28.3C and mean daily minimum
at about 11.9C. Cold waves sometimes affect the region in association with the passage of western
disturbances across North India. On such occasions, the minimum temperature sometimes drops down
to 6-7C. the lowest temperature recorded at Ahmedabad is 2.2C on 6th February 1920.
Wind
Long term wind direction data is presented in Table 4-5. During June to September, that is during
the monsoon season wind blows mostly from south-west. During the period from October to February,
both the morning and evening winds are mostly from northeast. During March to May wind mostly
blows from north-west predominantly.

Rainfall
The distribution of rainfall in the region, which includes the study area, is uneven. Average rainfall in
the region is 762.7 mm. About 93 percent of the annual rainfall in the region is received during the
southwest monsoon months i.e. June to September. July is the rainiest month.
The annual average rainfall is about 762.7 mm. Maximum rainfall in any one month was recorded in
the month of July in year 1905 which was about 952.5 mm. July is having maximum number of rainy
days i.e. 11.2.
Cloud Cover
The area remains cloudy between June - September, which is the active period of the monsoon
season. During this time all clouds cover is between 4.3 to 6.6 Oktas during day time and 3.9 to 6.3
Oktas during night time.
Humidity
Most humid conditions are found in the monsoons, followed by post-monsoons, winter and summer in
that order. Mornings are more humid than evenings and humidity ranges from a high of 74-87% in
monsoon mornings to a low of 20-45% in summer evenings. During post-monsoon season, in morning
humidity remains between 55-64% and in the evening it remains between 35-37%.

A comparison of the above results with the value range indicators provided by CPCB
The average concentration of PM2.5 recorded at 14 locations ranged from19 g/m3 (Ridrol
village) to 34 g/m3 (Chandrumana and Bilodra Villages). All these values are within the
specified limit of CPCB (60 g/m3).
The average concentration of PM10 recorded at 14 locations ranged from 58 (Ajol Village) to
76 g/m3 (Bilodra Village). All these values are within the specified limit of CPCB (100 g/m3).
The average concentration of SO2 were found in range from 9.0 g/m3 (Ubkhal Village) to
10.9 g/m3 (Ridrol Village) All these values are within the specified limit of CPCB (80 g/m3
The average concentration of NOX were found in range from 16.1 g/m3 (Irana Village) to
12.4 g/m3 (Ridrol Village) All these values are within the specified limit of CPCB (80 g/m3
National Ambient air quality standards are given in Annexure 3. The detailed ambient air quality
monitoring results are given in Annexure 4.
4.6
Ambient noise level is the background sound pressure level at a given location, normally specified as a
reference level to study a new intrusive sound source
Examples of background noises are environmental noises such as waves, traffic noise, alarms, people
talking, bio acoustic noise from animals or birds and mechanical noise from devices such as
refrigerators or air conditioning, power supplies or motors.
The objective of monitoring background noise level in study area is to establish baseline noise level to
identify impact due to proposed drilling activity.
Based on site visit of existing drilling operation in cambay basin, it is observed that exploratory drilling
would not have impact on noise environment beyond site boundary or in close vicinity as the drilling
locations will be selected such that they would be at a safe distance of 500 meter from nearest
habitation.
Hence, nearest habitations or other important locations to proposed wells were selected for baseline
noise monitoring.
