    Ifunobstructed,radiowaveswilltravelinastraightlinefromthetransmittertothereceiver.Butifthere
    arereflectivesurfacesalongthepath,suchasbodiesofwaterorsmoothterrain,theradiowaves
    reflectingoffthosesurfacesmayarriveeitheroutofphaseorinphasewiththesignalsthattravel
    directlytothereceiver.WavesthatreflectoffofsurfaceswithinanevenFresnelzoneareoutofphase
    withthedirectpathwaveandreducethepowerofthereceivedsignal.Wavesthatreflectoffofsurfaces
    withinanoddFresnelzoneareinphasewiththedirectpathwaveandcanenhancethepowerofthe
    receivedsignal.Sometimesthisresultsinthecounterintuitivefindingthatreducingtheheightofan
    antennaincreasesthesignaltonoiseratio.
    Fresnelprovidedameanstocalculatewherethezonesarewhereagivenobstaclewillcausemostlyin
    phaseormostlyoutofphasereflectionsbetweenthetransmitterandthereceiver.Obstaclesinthefirst
    Fresnelzonewillcreatesignalswithapathlengthphaseshiftof0to180degrees,inthesecondzone

    aradiobeam.Thefirstzonemustbekeptlargely
    freefromobstructionstoavoidinterferingwiththe
    radioreception.However,someobstructionofthe

    thumbthemaximumobstructionallowableis40%,
    buttherecommendedobstructionis20%orless.
