HERE TO STAy, THE HURRy-UP OFFENSE REMAINS TOUGH TO DEFEND

By GeorGe Vondracek

Remember the huddle? The gathering of

two groups of 11 football
players on each side of
the line of scrimmage in
which offensive and defensive strategies were
plotted?
Players holding hands
in a show of unity. The
quarterback getting the
call from the sideline
there was a time when,
gasp, he would make the
call himself with the
defensive captain doing
the same. Ready, break!
A clap of the hands signaled the end of the
huddle, and the players trotted to the line of
scrimmage.
What a concept. A
staple of football.
One doesnt see it
as often these days,
however.
With the advent of
the spread offense and
the no-huddle, hurry-up
style that accompanies it,
defenses do not have the
luxury of time to make
elaborate adjustments
to what the opposition is
about to present, let alone
make substitutions.
Preparation, conditioning and having more
athletic players on the
field have become as important as tackling and
batting away passes on
defense.
Theres no proof
of this, but I would say
tempo, the speed of play

refugio head coach Jason Herring, seen here during a game last season, said that a hurry-up
scheme can cause a defense to fatigue and give the offense an advantage.
that offenses are playing, has been the biggest
difference in football in
the last five years, said
coach Jason Herring,
whose Refugio teams
have been force-feeding
an extremely fast-paced
offense through opponents face masks for
nearly a decade. I think
its completely changing
the game. Because the
old days of a team just
huddling up 8 yards in
front of it, you having
a second to catch your
breath, your coach signals in a defensive play
call ... I mean, those days
are over if the team is
playing fast.
You dont have a
chance to signal all
that in, or you wont be
lined up, Herring said.
I think thats why of-

fenses have kind of gone

that way, and you see it at
every level.
Not all teams play offense at an accelerated
pace, and not all play the
hurry-up with the same
speed. But a large majority of high schools are
moving in the direction
of a quick-strike offense.
Herring points out that
even a team like Rogers, which fell to Refugio two years ago in the
playoffs 73-72, is still a
run-oriented squad. But
Rogers huddles only
a few feet behind the
line of scrimmage, then
makes a quick jaunt to
the line and snaps the
ball immediately.
As with most evolutions, defenses have
adapted to what offenses are doing. Defenses

will continue to do so,

to the point one day of
effectively solving the
hurry-up attacks.
It kind of reminds
me of the run and shoot
way back in the day,
Calallen defensive coordinator Steve Campbell
said. Once you figure
it out and you have
to do a lot of homework
and a lot of research
but once you figured out
what the run-and-shoot
teams were looking for,
we kind of put them out
of business.
To date, however, it
hasnt been an easy task
for a team to defend a nohuddle, hurry-up offense,
with several factors complicating the issue.
Thats probably the

most difficult part, getting all 11 guys on the

same page in a hurryup offense, Campbell
said. But we have been
formation-oriented for
quite a long time. So it
hasnt been too difficult
of a transition for us.
If its done right, it
may limit the ability of
a defensive coordinator to make adjustments
and make calls, Carroll
coach Tony Trevio said.
You may catch a defense
out there with very little
instruction from their
coaches because of the
pace of the game.
The transition has been
easier for some, as Campbell noted. But the audibles defenses traditionally
have called with relative
ease have been quashed
because of the time element. Some teams use
wrist bands and/or hand
signals, the same techniques any offenses use,
while others use poster
boards with symbols, numerals or letters signifying certain schemes.
We do a little bit of
everything. Sometimes
we signal and it means
absolutely nothing, and
then sometimes we signal
and it means something,
King defensive coordinator Lamont Mayberry
said. Sometimes we let
our kids call it on the
field, and that goes with
preparation. Youve got to
be prepared. Youve got to
trust your kids.
But expediting that
information to the players on the field is the key,
which presents another

Caller-Times file

longtime Calallen defensive coordinator steve Campbell said preparation is a big factor in defenses being able to process the
information they need against a hurry-up offense.
piece to the defenses conundrum preparation.
The time teams have
to form a defensive plan
for the next play could
range anywhere from
five to 15 seconds pending the speed through
which an offense operates. While the call on
the field remains important, the time defenses
spend poring through
scouting reports, watching video and developing
the game plan throughout the week becomes
more critical.
Everybodys got to be
on the same page. All 11
have to know where to be
at, King senior defensive
end Jasper Stafford said.
Everybodys on one
swivel, pretty much. Its
about getting them three
and out, because if they
get a first down, theyre
pushing the pace. Youve

just got to focus on getting

that three and out, three
and out. If you get three
and out in 15 seconds,
thats a good thing.
The premium is on that
preparation, because substitutions, though not out
of the question, are as limited as the defenses ability to make quick adjustments if an offense shows
a different look shortly
before the snap.
It only takes three or
four seconds to run off
the field, Mayberry said.
Youre only asking them
to run 25 yards on and 25
yards off. You just have
to train your players to
be ready for those situations. So if you practice it
your kids will adapt and
be ready for it.
Again, preparation.
Part of that includes
conditioning, and they
go hand in hand as far

as importance.
I dont know which
ones a premium, Herring said, but you better
be pretty cotton-pickin
good at both.
Defensive players
could be on the field for an
extended period of time.
The opposite argument
is that the offensive players, too, are playing at an
accelerated pace and can
be winded as well. But the
counterargument is the
age-old notion that the
offensive players know
where they are going.
Defensive players can
only give chase.
Whenever you start
moving around and that
player starts becoming fatigued, that speed
starts to punch you in
the mouth, Stafford
said. You cant really do
too much when youre
tired. That fatigue makes

cowards out of all of us.

Once you get to that point
in your body, its over.
Thats a wrap. Theyll be
calling, Coach, get me
out of the game.
When youre tired
youre thinking about
how bad youre hurt and
youre breathing, youre
not thinking about all
the things that coach
told you to think about,
Herring said. (When)
youve got time to process it, and they jog up to
the line, OK, theres the
pro set, theres the tight
end, I remember coach
said this. But when
theyre going 90 to nothing and youre physically
wore out, I think the first
thing to go is the mental
part, which means you
should have an advantage from an offensive
standpoint.
Many assume the

no-huddle, hurry-up
style is a relatively new
concept. Its history, however, can be traced to
1899, when John Heisman
implemented the concept
at Auburn. Numerous
coaches, ranging from
Chip Kelly of the Philadelphia Eagles to Washington States Mike Leach,
have made the hurry-up
as common in football as
the huddle used to be.
One thing is certain:
the no-huddle, hurry-up
offensive style isnt going away anytime soon
much to the chagrin
of some who long for the
days when teams would
huddle.
I love those huddles
now, and I love it when
they get some of those
good athletes off the field,
too, Campbell said. Its
very difficult.
Of course, there are
many offensive-minded
coaches who wouldnt
have it any other way.
Im used to calling
plays so fast, and Im sitting there thinking, Golly,
how in the old days did I
used to wait 45 seconds
between calling plays?
Herring said. Because
now, I mean, you run a
play, boom, the kids are
looking at you. You run a
play. Were running three
to four plays in what used
to take one or two, almost
twice as many.
I dont look back as
wanting to go back to the
old days, he said. I look
back at how in the world
did I do that? How did
it take me 30 seconds to
call a play? Its changed, I
promise you.

A year ago, there

was no question the
strength of K ings
football team was its
defense. Even with
talented running back
Tristian Price in tow,
the Mustangs were
going to ride their defenders to success in
2014.
Fast for wa rd 1 2
months, and the experienced cleats are on
the other side of the
line of scrimmage.
Defensively, weve
just got to pick up the
slack, said King tackle
Jasper Stafford, one of
three returning senior defensive starters
along with linebacker
Rodney Taylor and
defensive back Gavin
Senterfitt.
With three returning starters, (the newcomers) are just going
to have to follow our
lead. I like it. We have
a chance to lead, Stafford said. Weve been
on varsity since our
sophomore year, and
we havent been able to
lead. But I feel like Ive
been a leader since my
sophomore year, even
leading some of those
seniors. Now Ive got
younger cats under me,
and I think were going
to be ready.
If they are, that could

lead to good things for

the Mustangs, who
have the offensive experience to bid for a
repeat Class 6A playoff appearance and
sixth in Eddie Hesseltines seventh season
as coach.
Not that we dont
have great players
on defense; we have
some great players on
defense, Hesseltine
said. But if you talk
about overall numbers,
returning starters, returning experience
guys, our offense has
more. Our defense is
going to be fine. But
our offense definitely
has a lot of starters
that have a lot of experience.
T h at ex per ience
starts under center,
where senior Spencer Manuel returns.
Manuel is coming off
a school-record 1,089
yards and 16 touchdowns passing.
Of equal import are
two talented wide receivers who return
senior Holly Thompson and junior Indigo
Jackson. Then there
are three players up
front, seniors David
Barrios and Cortez
Ducksworth and junior Albert Villarreal,
who moves from center
to guard as sophomore
Dom i n ique ReyesLopez has improved
enough to earn that
starting spot.
Trying to fill the

spot of Price, a former

Caller-Times Newcomer of the Year, will be
senior Hassian Newsome, a transfer last
year from Virginia, and
sophomore Kameron
Lozano, who was a key
cog on Kings District
28-6A freshman champions.
That is giving Hesseltine more tha n
enough to fuel his optimism.
Every year, we want
to believe that were
going to be better than
the previous year,
Hesseltine said. But
this year is a little bit
different. The reason
I feel it is, is because
of the numbers last
year. Offensively, the
quarterback broke the
school record in passing. We threw the ball
better than weve ever
thrown here. Were
still a running team,
but weve thrown the
ball better than weve
ever thrown.
If you look at our
skill kids, our skill kids
are definitely at the top
notch, I believe, not just
in South Texas but in
our district, Hesseltine
said. We have some of
the best skill kids in the
district. Lastly, that offensive line is much improved. Theyve been
in the weight room,
theyre strong, and I
think thats going to be
key, too.

Changes afoot under charlton

AddS twiStS

Special to the Caller-Times

Ray fans wont be

able to notice a big
change in the Texans offense. Theyll
still see four receivers
spread across the field
and one back, but dont
tell the players its the
same offense.
While Cody Simper
has gone to Veterans
Memorial, the basics
of his spread offense
stayed behind. But new
coach Craig Charlton
and offensive coordinator Danny Faust have
been teaching the players plenty of tweaks to
the offense. The routes
for the receivers are
different, and there is
more responsibility
placed on the players
to read keys from the
defense and adjust accordingly.
The kids are doing great with it, said

Charlton, who was the

defensive coordinator at Del Valle before
taking the Ray job in
April. Its pretty neat
how fast we were able
to get through some
stuff and have the kids

so quickly.
The Texans return
six players from an offense that averaged 27.5
points per game, but
theyre missing two of
the key players from
that offense. Quarterback Armando Garza
a nd r un ning back
Tristan Barrera accounted for 91 percent
of the teams yardage
last season, and theyve
both graduated.
Matthew Moffitt and
Isaiah Shamoun are
competing to see who
will replace Garza at
quarterback. Whoever
wins the job will have a
lot of responsibility on
his shoulders.
The (offensive coordinator is) going
to call the plays, but

were teaching the

quarterbacks concepts
of the offense; we want
them to understand
why were doing what
were doing, Charlton said. On certain
pass plays, theyll have
certain reads, whether
it be the outside linebacker or the safety,
where theyll read
where theyre lined up
and how they react as
to what were going to
do.
While looking for
new
play m a kers ,
Charlton expects the
offensive line to be
improved and be a big
help to whoever has the
ball in his hands. Nam
Dimas, Jacob Garcia
and Arnold Mendoza
all are key returners
along the offensive
line.
The defense will be
led by Garcia up front,
three-year starter Roland Villanueva at inside linebacker and
Nico Ficenec at free
safety.

QB, HORNETS
REAdy TO BuiLd
ON Big SEASON
By Jose RodRiguez
jose.rodriguez@caller.com

Flour Bluff is not exempt from the usual personnel turnover that affects football programs
every year, be it because
of graduation or other
matters.
The Hornets will usher in new blood in 2015,
make no mistake, but
they bring back experienced varsity players as
well as many teams
do though those
numbers, like personnel
losses, vary from school
to school.
What wasnt so universal an aspect of the
Bluffs offseason was the
continued maturation of
its quarterback, 6-foot-6
Cody Brewer, or the influence his return in particular has had on these
Hornets.
Hes a two-year starter going into his third
year; hes 22-3. I mean,
hes got some experience, said Jason Richards, the Bluffs offensive
coordinator and quarterbacks coach. Hes
played in five playoff
games in two years, you
know? Big games. There
are some big games in
(District 30-5A). Hes
kind of been there, done
that, and the thing with
Cody is, he can throw
an 85-yard touchdown
pass or throw an interception, and you get the

same person.
One thing that were
working on, and hes
done a great job of this
summer, is that he is the
face of our football team
and he is a leader. Hes
really embraced that.
Evidently.
Brewer, a senior committed to Washington
State, has become something of a teacher a
hat he wore regularly
throughout the offseason since the Bluff

implemented an up-tempo, Air Raid attack in 2014.

Coming off a prolific junior campaign in
which he threw for 3,261
yards and 35 touchdowns
on his way to All-South
Texas first-team and 305A Offensive MVP honors, there perhaps is no
better on-field instructor
at the Hornets disposal
than Brewer.
And he understands
the increased weight
of his responsibilities,

given the need to replace

six offensive starters off
last years 12-1 club.
Its a little more
teaching than anything
else, Brewer said, because we got new people
who moved in, or we got
new people into certain
positions, or people who
have been there and just
(moved up) from JV to
varsity because its
a whole new level for
them.
More pressure on

him? I dont think so,

Bluff coach Chris Steinbruck said of Brewer. I
think hes so much more
comfortable in our offense after having a year
in it. Naturally, hes going to make everybody
else around him better
than last year. We can
take a kid whos less talented at receiver, for instance, and Cody, having
a year of experience in it,
is going to make that guy
better.

And then theres

Brewer finding ways to
better himself.
Seriously?
Im working on a lot
more studying of the
game, Brewer said,
like studying your opponents, especially
film, everything like
that, because thatll be a
big advantage.
Because we RPO everything we run-pass

touchdown celebrations
to be bountiful this fall.
Entering their second
season of operation out
of an up-tempo spread
offense with an experienced quarterback in
Cody Brewer at the controls, no less the Hornets appear poised to
make trips to end zones
with regularity.
Often enough, perhaps,
to make household names
out of this years crop of
receivers, one of the most
noticeable differences
between last years team
and the 2015 edition.
Lost to graduation
were Aaron Dilworth,
the All-South Texas MVP
and co-MVP of District
30-5A, and Kevin Dewitt,
who caught a team-best
15 touchdowns.
Dilworth and Dewitt
formed the areas most
formidable 1-2 passcatching tandem, totaling 151 receptions, 2,492
yards and 29 scores.
Tasked with filling
their shoes: senior Alex
Cain and sophomore
Ransom Johnson.
I think Alex Cain
definitely is our leading
receiver, Bluff coach
Chris Steinbruck said.
Cain was the Hornets
fourth-leading receiver
in 2014. Hes the guy

that has the most experience coming in this

season. We moved Ransom Johnson, whos going to be a sophomore,
(is) really, really athletic
a kid that had a great
spring. Hes going to
be, like, our Aaron Dilworth. Cains going to be
our Kevin Dewitt.
Who will be this
years Thomas Evaristo?
Also lost to graduation,
Evaristo was Brewers
No. 3 target in 2014,
working as a tight end or
in the slot as the Bluffs
C receiver.
Jaeger Bull, the new
move-in, is going to be,
like, our Thomas Evaristo, Steinbruck said.
Hell play some tight
end and slot receiver.
Weve got Rashun Watkins, who moved over
from defense, is extremely athletic, and then we
have two other kids:
Jackson Preschler, who
played receiver a really good receiver for us
on the JV last year and
Clay Thompson. Clay
is a kid that was a real
good JV player and had a
great spring at receiver,
so really, we have six
receivers. With the way
we tempo and as many
plays as we run, theyre
all going to get tons of opportunities, and having a
good rotation where we
can keep guys fresh, obviously, is going to help
us offensively.
Steinbruck said Watkins and Thompson will
rotate at the A position

on the outside opposite

Johnsons B, while
Cain occupies the pivotal F position.
The elusive Cain, like
Dewitt, will be put to use
in many ways, from going down field to catching swing passes.
Hes a great route
runner, offensive coordinator Jason Richards said of the 5-foot-10
Cain. He doesnt have
that top-end speed that
Kevin had, but hes probably the best route runner weve had in the past
two years.
Hes really good,
Cain said of his predecessor, Dewitt, with a laugh.
Well, Ive talked to him
about the position and everything, and youve just
got to be able to do everything. Its a big part of the
offense, that position.
The 6-foot Johnson is
a speedster with potential to break all kinds
of receiving records at
the Bluff, Richards said
while Bull fills the
tight end/slot receiver
void and Watkins, a 6-2,
210-pound senior, provides a big target across
the field.
The Hornets believe
in the potency of this
bunch.
Soon, area defenses
will find out for themselves.
I think people are going to have a hard time
trying to stop us, Watkins said.

Bull is expected to contribute
right away in his debut season
with the Bluff. His transfer to the
Coastal Bend also provides the
Hornets with some much-needed
depth behind Cody Brewer at
the quarterback position. Ideally, though, Bull will carve out a
niche as a reliable pass-catching

Hornet. Bull was a focal point

Physically, Brewer checks

Even better now.

as he did last year, but its at
a new level now, Richards
said.
The Bluff coaches and

Brewer, for that matter
also hope to give opposing defenses fits using his
legs, weapons they limited
last season. The addition
of junior quarterback/tight
end/receiver Jaeger Bull, a
Coronado (California) High
School transfer, makes running Brewer a little easier for
the Hornets coaches.
We feel like now we can
run Cody a little bit more,
because weve got a good
plan just in case, God forbid,
something happened to him,
Steinbruck said.
Should the Bluff successfully tap into Brewers mobility week in and week out,
opposing defenses will be
burdened with trying to account for one more threat.
And it should be noted:
Without an emphasis on
his running ability, Brewer
still rushed for nine scores

in 2014.
A lot of people dont understand this, but Cody can
run, Richards said. Were
going to do that; were going
to run him this year. Thats
just going to give us a whole
other dynamic. Hes always
been pretty elusive when
things break down; hes always been able to kind of get
us out of bad situations.
Hed get so upset and frustrated, like, Let me run the
football, coach, Steinbruck
said of Brewer, with a laugh.
Being 6-6, 235 ... I mean, try
tackling that guy.
Its going to be hard.
So could shouldering the
pressure of building on a
2014 season in which the

CoyoteS AgAin

tough 30-5A
By Damen Clow
Special to the Caller-Times

There are places in

Texas where a district
win or two will secure
a high school football team a berth in
the playoffs.
Then there is District
30-5A quite possibly
the toughest district in
the state.
Sure, 25-5A produced
two regional champions in 2014 (Austin
Vandegrift in Division
I and Cedar Park in Division II), and its four
playoffs teams combined for 10 postseason
wins after identical
5-2 district runs.
Can the Coastal Bend
hold its feet to that fire?
Go ask Alice.
The Coyotes entered
the biennial realignment in 2014 on the
heels of a 10-2 season
in District 31-4A, during which they led the
district in points scored
(more than 40 per game)
and their only setbacks
were a one-point loss
to Flour Bluff to begin
district play and a 42-0
season-ending dismantling by Calallen in the
area playoff.
Their reward? A move
to 30-5A in 2014, joining those same Hornets
and Wildcats, along
with Gregory-Portland,
Moody, Miller, TulosoMidway and two Vic-

toria schools. Alices

inaugural season in 305A ended with back-toback district losses by
a single point to G-P and
a pair of touchdowns to
undefeated, state-ranked
Flour Bluff.
That gave the Coyotes four district losses
and lots of time on their
hands in November to
think about them.
We had our chances
last year, and we just
kind of blew it, Alice
coach Chris Soza said.
We had some breaks
go against us. We
played hard, and we
knew there would be
some schools left home,
and we were just one of
those teams.
Three of the districts
four representatives
made it to the Region IV
semifinals in their respective divisions, while
Alice began to prepare
for an identical district
schedule in 2015.
Youd better come
ready to play every week,
because if you dont, it
could be the difference
between you making
the playoffs and staying
home, Soza said.
A lice has some
strength returning on
the defensive side, especially in the secondary
against their pass-happy district foes. Senior
defensive end Daniel
Delgado (6-foot-2, 240
pounds) is a returning
all-district first-team
selection with all-state
potential. Alice has two

defensive backs who
were named secondteam all-district last
year in Jonavan Lopez
and Michael Garcia.
The offense was expected to be led by junior
quarterback Andres Barrios, coached at the position by his father, assistant coach Art Barrios.
But the younger Barrios
suffered a broken leg in
the Coyotes first scrimmage against Ingleside,
and will be out for an
extended period of time.
That compounds
Sozas early concern of
the teams overall lack
of depth. Instead of
platooning two players
at every position as in
years past, some Coyotes
will be playing on both
sides of the ball.

By most high school

football standards, qualifying for the playoffs
makes for a successful
season. It is a foot in the
postseasondoorand,once
in, anything is possible.
Those who wear Calallen colors have experienced that feeling for
30 consecutive seasons.
Yet No. 30 wasnt as enjoyable, nor as satisfying,
as one might think.
Point to a lack of focus,
a lack of team leadership
or poor attitudes. Whatever the cause, the Wildcats were left scrambling
to keep the states second-longest postseason
appearance streak alive.
Then, after a solid 57-14
bi-district win at Somerset, there was the shocking 28-0 loss to Sharyland
in the area round at Javelina Stadium, a vivid illustration of the Wildcats
erratic season.
Those who remain
are charged with trying
to restore the Calallen
swagger, and they are
preparing to do just that.
Weve kind of got a
sour taste in our mouth

the better seasons Calallens had this year.
Coach Phil Danaher
believes so as well. At
least the number of experienced players returning would suggest to the
states second-winningest
coach that 2015 will be
morerewardingthan2014.
Were going to be
better. I say were going to be better mainly

because we have more

experience, but we have
better work habits and
better attitudes, said
Danaher, who begins his
32nd season at Calallen
with an overall record of
407-103-4.
We have to start off
doing well in the scrimmages and just keep on
building from there,
senior defensive end
Moneeb Ullah said. We
had a good spring. The
offseason we did really
well, we did boot camp.
Were a close-knit group.
Three of the four who

manned the quarterback

slot return, but the starting battle appears to be
between Crisp and Gaige
Lamb, who started seven
games, throwing for 632
yardsandsixtouchdowns.
Senior Nathan Rabe,
the other quarterback
from a year ago, moves
to wide receiver and returns at cornerback and
also could be called upon
for other offensive duties.
Top receiver Phil
Hobbs, tackles Matt
Cade and Nick Tovar,
Rabe and Lamb are the
other offensive starters
returning. But a host of
players, including running backs Reece Barrett,
Elijah Hawkins his 402
yards led all rushers
and Phillip Lively and
receiver John Gaddis,

logged playing time.

Which brings us to the
rub. The team leader in
tackles a year ago, Barrett is an all-state candidate at linebacker. Crisp,
Gaddis, Lively and Rabe
are penciled in for secondary duty. Sophomore
end Brandon Broughton,
linebacker Ryder Duff,
Ullah and defensive
back Kalani Ybarra are
the other returnees, but
only Ullah likely wont
see double duty.
The thing is, weve
got to rob Peter to pay
Paul, Danaher said.
Some of the best offensive players are defensive guys. But we really
believe defense is going
to win championships.
Defense and improved
attitudes and work ethics

will play a hand in that.

Everybody always
says the 2005 team had
great chemistry, Danaher said, referring
to the Wildcats lone
team to play for a state
title. Well, what the
hells great chemistry? I
thought about that for a
year after that. What was
chemistry? Well, chemistry was nothing more
than attitude. With attitude comes good work
habits, positive thinking,
being a team player, being a leader, staying out
of trouble, being a good
student and being someone that your team could
count on. Thats what
chemistry is. It all goes
back to attitude.

whos up next for G-p?

Another yeAr,
Another Stud
rB to repLACe
By Matt young
Special to the Caller-Times

Last year at this time,

Gregory-Portland football players had to answer the same question
around town: How in
the world are you going
to replace Devin Bisby?
The Wildcats stud running back rushed for
1,764 yards and 20 touchdowns in 2013 and left a
gaping hole in the backfield when he graduated.
Entering the 2015
season, the Wildcats
have to answer a similar question: How in the
world are you going to
replace Steven Starcher?
The relative unknown
ended up filling Bisbys
shoes and then some,
rushing for 1,896 yards
and 21 touchdowns last
season. Now, Starcher
has graduated, and its
time for someone else
to step up.
The leading candidates to fill that role are
senior Blaine Monroe
and junior Anthony
Huerta. Monroe has
plenty of experience after playing on the varsity
since he was a sophomore and rushed for
843 yards and 10 touchdowns last year. He piled
up that yardage despite
getting 94 carries (9.0
yards per carry). Huerta
is a newcomer whom
G-P coach Matt Anastasio thinks will use his

speed to put up big numbers as well.

Its the same thing
we heard when Devin
graduated. Now we have
people wondering what
were going to do without Steven, Anastasio
said. Blaine is a tough
runner, and he was really good for us last year.
Anthony brings a little
more speed. We expect
to be fine running the
ball.
The Wildcats also are
looking for a new quarterback since Eric Alvarado graduated. After
a lengthy quarterback
battle, it looks like Tyler
Bluemel will emerge as
the starter, with a few
others vying for playing
time, if necessary.
Tyler has started at
cornerback for us the
past two years, but hes
worked some at quarterback, too, Anastasio
said. He can run it and
throw it. Wed like to be
able to throw it just a
little bit more than we
did last year, but Tylers
a good runner, as are the
other guys weve looked
at to play that position.
No matter who lines
up behind center, hell
benefit from a wealth
of experience up front.
Tackles William Withers and Brandon Acosta
are returning starters,
as is guard Augustine
Martinez.
Thats going to help,
Anastasio said. Anytime you bring back
that much experience

on the offensive line,

that means theyre going
to see stuff on the field
before even we see it.
The defense also will
be experienced with the
entire defensive line
(ends Rollie Tatum and
Jonathan Reinhart and
nose guard George Villela) returning from last
year. Both starting safeties Eric White and
Blake Perez also return, as does cornerback
Koby Kobecka. Nainoa
Bean the Wildcats
best defensive player
last year also is back
as a starting middle linebacker.
(Bean) is a big, strong
kid, Anastasio said.
Hes very aggressive,
and hes got the speed to
run down most backs.
Hes leader of our defense based on his physicality.
All that experience
also means most of
the team remembers
last years poor start.
The Wildcats opened
last season with three
straight losses and started 1-4 before reeling off
seven straight wins and
making it to the third
round of the playoffs.
This years team opens
with the same three
teams El Campo, Carroll and Victoria West.
The kids remember,
and they know about it,
so thats the big thing,
Anastasio said. They
dont want to start off
like last year, so theyll
handle it.

CAller-TiMes File

Blaine Monroe will return this season for the Wildcats and could be one of two candidates to fill the
role as their featured running back.

Coaching at one of
the six Corpus Christi
ISD high schools in his
hometown is a dream
come true for Michael
Cantu.
In his fourth season as
Moodys head coach
he previously coached at
Carroll and area middle
schools Cantu said
the Trojans are building a program from the
ground up.
Last season, Moody
went 1-9 in the newly
constructed District
30-5A. The team has 22
returning players, some
of whom are starters and
many who may need to
play both offense and
defense.
Ready to move on,
Cantu said the Trojans
coaching staff has focused on what they have
now and not what they
may be missing.
Were trying to prepare them. We have a real
good crop of freshmen
that came in, and were
trying to distinguish
how many well carry
on varsity and how many
on (junior varsity), he
said. We dont have the
biggest numbers in the
world, but well manage.
This is what we have.
Lets go play.
Part of the coaching staffs philosophy
is building young men

with strong futures and

not just training football
players.
We might not be winning a lot of games, but
were winning in the
classroom, Cantu said.
Our kids are graduating,
moving on to college, and
some are learning trades
from the medical/science programs here. Its
all about teaching them
the character-building
traits for life after high
school.
Respect for others,
especially the elderly
and women, is the most
important attribute a
Moody football player
learns in four years under Cantu.
We want them to appreciate the value of life,
but at the same time, its a
yes sir, no sir world. Its
opening the door for that
young lady when shes
getting into her car or
when shes walking into a
restaurant, he said. We
have high expectations.
Though he rolled an
already temperamental
ankle during the first
week of practice, senior linebacker Daniel
Lozano has no plans to
stay off the football field
once the season gets underway. Lozano said the
offseason was an important time for the Trojans.
It was about intensity,
getting stronger and faster, Lozano said while
resting his ankle on the
trainers cart. We feel
like this year, we have a
great chance to be better

RaChel Denny Clow/CalleR-Times

as well as hoping to improve on last seasons 1-9 record, moodys Trojans are learning.
than last year.
Lozano, offensive lineman Aaron Alvarez and
defensive end Daniel
Cervantes are the leaders
this season, Cantu said.
With that title comes responsibility.
Theyre tremendous
workers and set a great
team example of what
you want your kids to
be, he said. Theyre not
very rah-rah; they just
work extremely hard.
They have the mentality
that theyre not going to
be outworked.
Cervantes cites the
coaches motivation and
encouragement as the
backbone of the team.
We want to come
back and show them that
we can change the program, Cervantes said.

warriors starting over

1 t-m StArter
returnS from
2-8 CAmpAign
By Matt young
Special to the Caller-Times

As the smallest school

in a loaded nine-team
District 30-5A, TulosoMidway already faces
plenty of challenges. The
Warriors figure to face a
few more obstacles as
they return one starter
from a season ago.
After narrowly missing the playoffs in a
tiebreaker in 2013, T-M
struggled to a 2-8 finish
last season. The Warriors showed small flashes of brilliance, however.
They came torturously
close to snapping a 30game losing streak to
rival Calallen before
losing 14-6, a game in
which T-M was stuffed
at the goal line early in
the contest.
Now, the Warriors
will start from scratch.
We have a lot of new
faces out here, said Brian Boone, who enters his
fourth season as T-Ms
coach. We do have eight
or nine kids returning
that lettered last year,
but only one starter, so
theres a learning process going on right now.
If the Warriors are
scrambling for bright
spots, they can point to a
junior-varsity team that
went 9-1 last year and a
group of guys who have
been running the same
slot-T offense since ju-

nior high, when Boone

joined the program as
offensive coordinator
seven years ago.
Having these guys
in the same system for
the past seven years or
so is a big help, Boone
said. All these kids have
come up through it, so
that helps as far as having the groundwork already laid. So, now were
just trying to get better
at everything we do.
Jacob Rodriguez, the
lone returning starter,
definitely knows what
he is doing. The junior
has started at offensive
guard since he was a
freshman. He also will
play defensive tackle,
and Boone says he is
relying on him to be a
coach on the field.
Im pleased with our
offensive line, Boone
said. Jacobs a veteran
guy on the staff. Hes
started a lot of games for
us, and I think the rest of
the guys are picking up
things real well.
There is a new face at
quarterback, but Boone
is excited about the addition of Mike Saldivar.
The senior was forced
to spend last season on
the JV after transferring
from West Oso.
Mike brings a lot of
competitiveness, Boone
said. Id describe him
as a gamer. Hes going
to find a way to make
things happen. Hes got
great feet, and he throws
the ball well. When hes

in the huddle, the kids

buy in. They think we
have a chance when hes
back there.
The Warriors wont
have much experience
in the backfield, but
theyll have plenty of options. Gianni Villarreal,
Marc Calderon, Manny
Guerra, Adrian Pea and
Brandon Chavez all will
play a role in the backfield by committee.
Defensively, T-M will
be in the 4-2-5 for the
third consecutive year.
The Warriors surrendered 35.5 points per
game a year ago, including giving up more
than 50 points to Flour
Bluff, Gregory-Portland
and Victoria West. Another year in the system
should help, as well as a
solid defensive line led
by Rodriguez, standout
defensive tackle Frankie
Lopez and defensive end
Esteban Ruiz. Boone
also likes what he sees
from defensive back
Javier Saldivar, Mikes
younger brother.
With the teams in
our district, you dont
want to get into a shootout with people, Boone
said. Although we certainly scored our share
of points last year, we
gave up more than our
share, too. We dont
want to get into a shootout or a track meet with
these guys. We want to
use our offense to control the clock and then
play solid defense.

CODY BREWER, SR.,

FLOUR BLUFF
Brewer arguably is the best player
in the Coastal Bend and could be
relied on more this season, his
third as a starter, than in previous years because the Hornets
lost key weapons to graduation.
Brewer, a 6-foot-6 Washington
State commit, threw for 3,261
yards and 35 touchdowns in
2014. If healthy, Brewer, who
threw for more than 2,000 yards
as a sophomore, figures to eclipse
the 8,000-yard barrier for his
career.

NOAH LiSk, SR., CARROLL

The Harvard commit rushed for
1,860 yards in 2014, and his 28
rushing touchdowns set a CCISD
single-season record. An honorable-mention all-state pick by the
Associated Press Sports Editors,
Lisk averaged 7.8 yards a carry
for the Tigers last season.
AUSTEN REYNOLDS, SR.,
ROCkPORT-FULTON
Reynolds was the All-South Texas
Newcomer of the Year in 2014, so
R-F opponents will know all about
Reynolds this season. Running as
a part of the slot-T offense for the

Villarreal is a two-way and
multiple-sport star for the
Pirates as a wide receiver and
defensive back. He should quickly
become Colton Coheas top target

and will work with Cohea in the
Pirates defensive backfield.
CJ ROMERO, JR., ODEM

431.9 yards a game.
CHASE HERRig, SR., SiNTON

TRES PEREz, SR., CARROLL
Perez was a first-team All-District

Hudl OFFERs
FAsT ExcHANGE
OF GAME FIlM
By DaviD SikeS
david.sikes@caller.com
361-886-3616

During 21 years on the

job, Gregory-Portland
football coach and athletic director Matt Anastasio has gone from
splicing game films with
Scotch tape to almost instantly reviewing, analyzing and distributing
digital videos of games
and practices.
Nearly all high school
football coaches nowadays subscribe to a digital service called Hudl,
which allows them to
upload video of games
and practices and send
them to their players
mobile devices with the
click of a mouse or the
tap of a smartphone. And
each Saturday morning
during the season, thousands of high school
coaches exchange game
videos with counterparts they will face the
following week.
Years ago, coaches
would deliver actual
celluloid film to a processor after games.
Processing could take
hours. The following
day, someone usually
a coach would drive
the bulky roll of film to
an opposing coach, says
Orange Grove coach
Jerry Bomar. They often would meet at a designated halfway point to
reduce their drive times.
At Gregory-Portland,

GABE HERNANDEZ/CALLER-TIMES

Miller assistant coach Jesse Cruz and the Buccaneers have benefited from the latest video technology.
Hudl for the football program alone costs about
$1,600 a year, Anastasio
said. Chris Steinbruck,
Flour Bluffs coach and
AD pays about $5,000
annually for all of the
Bluffs sports programs
to use the service. Booster clubs at some schools
nationwide cover the
cost of Hudl, which has
risen quickly in five
years from a high-tech
luxury gimmick to an
essential coaching tool.
Hudl allows coaches
to elevate the oncetedious and time-consuming task of analyzing game film to a much
higher level of speed
and sophistication

one might say into the

clouds, or rather, into
the Cloud. They can
isolate or highlight
players in motion, add
graphics, text or audio

and even calculate instantly the number of

times a team passes and
runs the ball, along with
other game stats.
Before this technology

was introduced, coaches

would view and review
entire game films from
opposing teams with
a pencil and paper in
hand, counting passes

and rushes, switching

the projector off and on
or pressing the pause
button on a VCR, while
scribbling notes to be refined later into teaching
tools, often read or recited in a dark room beside
a flickering projector.
The VCR made life
easier, Anastasio said.
We had to make copies,
but not having to get film
developed after a game
was a huge hit with the
coaches. Then came HD
and digital. The only
problem now is we have
so many videos to look at
in one week.
Steinbruck said todays technology provides a level of insight
and analytics he never thought possible.
Coaches can learn about
an opposing teams tendencies down to the
percentage or number of
times another schools
quarterback successfully or unsuccessfully
completes passes and
to what part of the field
those passes go. This,
in turn, tells his defensive backs and safeties
where to be.
Steinbruck and other
coaches use Hudl to
prepare their defenses
so they can confidently
predict plays based on
the likelihood that certain offensive formations
produce those plays.
There is some data entry
involved, but the technology does the math.

from 34
We can track 100 percent tendencies, Steinbruck said. If we see
that every time they line
up in a certain way, they
always run a certain play,
thats what we look for.
Video archiving,
which carries an additional fee for greater
storage space, allows
Steinbruck to show his
players unusual formations and plays of opponents from previous
seasons. Steinbruck
applauds rival Calallen coach Phil Danaher for his innovative
bag of tricks, which he
has learned Danaher
will dust off and use in
certain situations. An
opposing coach may
not have seen a certain
Danaher formation in
years. But savvy coaches
familiar with Danahers
quirky plays and who
subscribe to Hudl can
show the play to their
teams before a game so
the players can recognize it and adjust.
On Sunday after I
break down the film,
we send out a presentation on the top five plays
and formations of the
other team and show
how to defend them,
Steinbruck said. Then
on Monday at practice,
we review the high-percentage plays and formations, but by then the
kids have already seen
and studied them.
Video cameras have
been fixtures at football
games and practices for
years. But today, by the
time players get home

GABE HERNANDEZ/CALLER-TIMES

Millers Luis Castillo and his teammates can more easily watch game footage thanks to advanced technology.

from practice, a Hudl

application allows them
to watch on their phones
what they did right or
wrong that day. Or they
can view practice videos
on a computer for a more
detailed picture.
A program allows
Steinbruck to know
which players watched
a video and how much
time they spent studying their homework.
Every player on his
team has access to this
information, because he
prints and posts it in the
locker room. A players
video study habits can
become a source of pride
or a motivational tool for

players who log the fewest hours.

An unexpected but
positive benefit of this
technology involves
greater parental engagement, Steinbruck said.
Giving parents access
to practice videos has
all but eliminated the
oft-repeated question:
How did practice go
today? Steinbruck said
parents are using practice videos as a means to
connect with their kids
and share time.
For the most part, the
parents love it, Steinbruck said. It provides
transparency and lets
them understand why

certain game-day decisions are made. It really

does engage parents in
the process.
There is another side
to such easy access to
team videos, Bomar said.
Greater access comes
with a loss of distribution
control. There are few secrets anymore, he said.
By secret, I mean
everyone has access
to your games now,
Bomar said. Its very
interesting how so many
games wind up in other
places. I know coaches
who have access to the
codes of other schools
so they can get on and
watch other peoples

games. And parents

film their kids games
that wind up on all social media. Nothing is
off-limits anymore.
So what is next in
football technology?
Some coaching staffs
are installing GoPro
video cameras on the
helmets of quarterbacks and other players
during practice to provide irrefutable insight
into where theyre looking and perhaps what
theyre missing by not
looking. Many other
coaches are considering this. But Steinbruck
suggested there is no
sense in keeping the

cameras grounded.
He imagines drones
hovering over a practice
field or stadium would
provide the best angle.
Steinbruck has seen the
video results of this. The
company that installed
the turf at Hornet Stadium used a video camera attached to a drone to
produce a promotional
video. Unfortunately
he will have to wait for
this birds-eye view. The
University Interscholastic League prohibits the
use of drone videos as a
coaching tool. At least
for now.

The departure of their

four-year starting, alleverything quarterback
may have left Sinton fans
fretting about their offense this fall. The fact
that they have another
one on the sidelines
might calm them.
In his playing days,
current Pirates assistant
coach Adrian Alaniz was
a four-year letterman
who quarterbacked undefeated Sinton squads
to the state final and regional semifinals in his
final two years before
trading his maroon helmet for the burnt-orange
baseball cap of the University of Texas.
After a handful of
years in the minor
leagues, Alaniz returned
to his alma mater to
coach. Also hitting the
field that year was an incoming freshman named
Tyler Handson.
He was kind of like
that little puppy dog,
baby-faced kid, Alaniz
remembered. He had
some talent behind him,

CLASS 4A/DIVISION II

kind of like clay that

needed to be molded.
Now, Handson has
completed the transformation from puppy dog
to Javelina, as he heads to
Texas A&M-Kingsville
this fall. During his fouryear career at Sinton,
Handson broke Alanizs
school record for varsity
games played (52), his
arm and legs accounting
for 170 touchdowns and
nearly 13,500 yards. That
translated to a 41-12 record and at least a share
of the district title in all
four seasons, including
back-to-back Region IV
titles and state semifinal
appearances.
Taking Handsons
place behind center will
be senior Colton Cohea,
who coach Tom Allen
calls a bull in a china
closet.
We ran the quarterback a lot with Tyler. He
was more of the missyou guy, said Allen, who
will start his ninth year at
Sinton. Coltons more of
the hunt-you-down guy.
He wants to punish you

Theyre blessed physically and mentally,
Allen said. You have

Cohea played nearly
every snap at free safety last year, as well as

Colton brings the

Alaniz said. He is one

Alaniz praised his

in which Cohea should
have an edge, having
been on that side of the

A lot of the big defensive coordinators
used to be offensive

Alaniz said. Because
he is the main signalcaller for our secondary, hes going to have
an edge knowing what

safeties, and stunts that

may be thrown at him
at certain times.
And while some
quarterbacks shy from
contact in practice, the
latest in Sintons legacy

Well watch film.

if people dont hit him.

Odem junior quarterback Michael Everett has made everyone

T h at fou r-i nterception debut against

all but a distant memory for Everett, who was
a Texas Sports Writers

the Owls last season.
Its fast at f irst
coming up from eighth
grade to varsity, said
the 16-year-old Everett, who switched positions from receiver to
quarterback in middle

Ive def initely progressed since then.
How much so? Everett threw nine interceptions all of last
season while leading
District 15-3A, Division

since 2002. Everett
threw for 3,589 yards
and 45 touchdowns

With two seasons

Voss, a receiver when

I thought my left wrist

Voss already is having to overcome an early

he isnt expected to miss

That is good news for

last season.
As a safety, he comes

KEY
C Trey Upton; OT
NEWCOMERS Ronnie Hucich; WR

Daidrin Dukes

OUTLOOK
The District 15-2A title should just be

the tip of the iceberg for the Bobcats,

which just has to replace a combined six
starters on both sides of the ball from
last years Class 2A state quarterfinalist
team. The offense which averaged
50 points per game last season is
again in good hands behind Mascorro,
who threw 40 touchdown passes and
two interceptions last season while also
rushing for more than 900 yards. Perez
led Refugio last season with 1,366 yards
and had 31 rushing touchdowns before
suffering that season-ending injury.

PLAYER TO WATCH

NAME: Jaylon Mascorro

POSITION: QB/DB
HT./WT.: 6-2, 210
CLASS: Junior
OF NOTE: Mascorro passed for
3,456 yards in 2014 with 40 touchdowns. With a reported four Division
I offers (SMU, Houston, Rice and
Kansas) entering the month and
other major programs showing interest, Mascorro could very well be the
Coastal Bends top recruit.

KEY
RB/LB Jacob HoffNEWCOMERS man; RB/LB Vince

Fuentes

OUTLOOK

The return of the standout running

back, Aguilar, should give the Pirates
offense plenty of balance again this
season. London must compensate
for the loss of receiver Chris Grays
ability to stretch the opposing teams
defense vertically in the passing game
this year. The return of Gonzalez and
Everett will help solidify the Pirates
defensive line, although London must
replace two starting inside linebackers from last season.

PLAYER TO WATCH

NAME: Jake Voss

POSITION: QB
HT./WT.: 5-8, 168
CLASS: Senior
OF NOTE: Voss was a first-team
all-district selection at three different positions last season and is a
preseason all-state punter, according
to the 2015 Dave Campbells Texas
Football Magazine. Voss had a hand
in 14 touchdowns on offense last
season despite missing the first four
games of the season because of a
concussion.

LB Brandon Adams;
OL Justin Lopez;
DB Gilbert Cantu; WR Gavin Gonzalez

KEY
LB Steven Rodriguez;
NEWCOMERS DE/TE Nick Garcia

OUTLOOK
After winning its first playoff game in

more than two decades last season,

Ben Bolt has plenty to be optimistic
about coming into coach Johnsons first
year at the helm. Although the Badgers
will be hard pressed to replace all-state
selection Andres Soliz and standout
quarterback Ryan Galvan (who also
graduated), the return of David Rojas
and first team all-district selection
Gonzalez will help give the offense a
lift. The return of first-team all-district
selection Adams will help Ben Bolts
defense compensate for the loss of
all-state honorable mention defensive
lineman Ariel Soliz, who was also one of
the districts co-MVPs last year.

PLAYER TO WATCH

NAME: David Rojas

POSITION: RB
HT./WT.: 5-5/162
CLASS: Senior
OF NOTE: Rojas was a first-team
all-district selection this past season. Rojas may be the Badgers next
workhorse back considering that last
years 2,000-yard rusher, Andres
Soliz, graduated.

OL Austin

Sebastian Lerma; DB Brett Garza;
LB Robert Acevedo

KEY
B Gavan Lomas;
NEWCOMERS LB Angel Cuellar

OUTLOOK
After being picked in the preseason by

at least one publication to finish last in

their district last season, the Seahawks
just missed the playoffs because of a
points tiebreaker after finishing in a
three-way tie for the final playoff berth.
Riviera is again determined to show that
it is a playoff team this season, as Borden said the Seahawks will be improved
on both sides of the ball. Riviera must
cut down on its penalties to make it to
the postseason for the first time under
Borden.

PLAYER TO WATCH

NAME: Gabriel Castillo

POSITION: QB
HT./WT.: 5-9, 200
CLASS: Sophomore
OF NOTE: Castillo shared the districts Newcomer of the Year with
Londons George Aguilar last season.
He puts plenty of zip on his passes,
as his fastball during baseball season
reaches 87 miles per hour.

NEWCOMERS

OUTLOOK
Palmer understands that Three Rivers is

a marked team this season and that the

Bulldogs cant live off of their success
last season. Despite also losing a standout linebacker to graduation, Palmer
said he believes Three Rivers has the
players this season to fill in the holes
left by graduation. Either Wesley Davidson, a junior, or the freshman White will
be the Bulldogs starting quarterback
this season.

PLAYER TO WATCH

NAME: Paul Almendarez

POSITION: RB/DB
HT./WT.: 5-10, 175
CLASS: Senior
OF NOTE: Almendarez was one of the
co-MVPs of District 16-2A, Division
I in 2014. He was also a 1,600-yard
rusher for the Bulldogs last season.

OUTLOOK
Perez will look to help the Eagles

rebound after theyve won a

combined three games over the
past three seasons. Benavides
will turn to its experienced skill
position players to attempt to
snap its current nine-game losing streak, which dates back to
last season. Expect the Eagles to
lean heavily this season on their
returning first-team all-district
receiver, Garcia, and 2014 second-team all-district selections:
Oliveira, Guzman and Abitua.
Oliveira, a first-team all-district
punter, will also help solidify
Benavides special teams again
this season.

OUTLOOK
Miller likes the Eagles chances

of making a run at their first

district title in more than two
decades, although theyll have
to replace a combined 12 starters on both sides of the ball this
season. With returning first-team
all-district senior LB Ayala and
Spears leading the way, Miller
said he believes Woodsboros
defense will be much improved
this season. Senior running back
Hernandez, who was a firstteam all-district selection last
season, and sophomore punter
Beall, who was a 16-2A, Division
II co-Newcomer of the Year last
season, also return.

PLAYER TO WATCH

NAME: Justin Spears

POSITION: LB

JOHN PAUL II CENTURIONS

DISTRICT: TAPPS Division II, District 3
HEAD COACH: Robert Gaza (first year)
ASSISTANT COACHES: Rashad Anderson, Julian Brazil, Alex
Garcia, BIlly Glover, Joseph Gonzalez, Chris Vidaurri, JJ Trujillo,
Steve Perales
2014 RECORD: 0-10, 0-6

Juarez

KEY
DE Jackson Pullen; DB Gage Davenport; QB
NEWCOMERS Jace Gaza

OUTLOOK
The Centurions can go nowhere

but up after a winless season

in 2014. Gaza takes over head
coaching duties after spending
last year as an assistant. He
will bring a fast-paced spread
offense to the team but will have
to build some experience as only
three starters return on both
sides of the ball. Jared Gaza
and Seals help to anchor the
offensive line, and Jace Gaza
will likely handle duties as the
signal caller. The Centurions
have a shot to compete for a
postseason berth if they can
stay healthy.

PLAYER TO WATCH

NAME: Jacob Juarez

POSITION: LB
HT./WT.: 5-11, 170
CLASS: Senior
OF NOTE: Juarez is one of three
returning starters on defense
and his experience will be important if the Centurions want to
break through to the playoffs.
