Dear Parents,

As you read this message we will be getting ready to open the IASAS Cultural Convention Art
exhibition in the FAT Lobby, planned for 6:00pm tonight. This will be followed by the Festival
Concert in the FAT at 7:00pm. Both events are sure to display an absolutely amazing array of
student talent from ISM and our sister IASAS schools; TAS, ISB, ISKL, SAS and JIS.

Our Activities and Performing Arts Offices have done a tremendous job of organizing this
event and you as a member of the community have also played your part as a host parent. At
the same time as this event is taking place here at ISM our dancers and thespians, forensic
speakers and debaters, are embroiled in the throes of competition and performances at
Taipei American School. These talented performers and artists provide a powerful positive
role model for all ISM students. I am delighted that at ISM it is “cool” to sing Mozart and play
Haydn’s Concerto in C major on the cello. It does seem clear to me that as a school we are
very successful in that part of our school mission that states “Our mission is to build a vibrant
learning community in which we all strive to:… nurture creativity and originality as precursors
for critical and reflective thought and action. In mentioning this I refer to a wide range of
evidence and not just to the IASAS experience, though having been involved with IASAS for
fourteen years I am a longstanding convert of the value of belonging to this organization. In
addition to the three sporting seasons, MUN and Cultural Convention each year, IASAS also
provides long-lasting relationships between the students and faculty of IASAS schools.

I would like to remind all parents and students that this week is a NO HOMEWORK weekend
for students; however it is not a no homework weekend for parents! We have our HS Parent
Coffee on Tuesday and Fred Biggar, our IT Curriculum Coordinator, has asked parents to
prepare questions and bring issues and ideas about teenagers and the internet to our
meeting. I hope to see as many parents as possible on Tuesday morning.

We are well underway with plans for Graduation 2010. Senior parents please keep Friday, May
28 free for commencement exercises of the graduating class of 2010. In the mean time it is
important that seniors focus on their upcoming school exams to be held from Wednesday
March 17 through Wednesday March 24. Actual IB exams will begin on May 4, 2010.

I hope to see you in the FAT tonight or at the HS parent coffee on Tuesday.

Kind regards,

William R. S Brown Michael Dickinson

From the Office of the Superintendent:
Dear Parents:

Some time ago, we were officially told that, in future, all the major non-working holidays would be scheduled for Monday
except for ones as date-specific as Christmas Day. We have, of course, factored in this information when we deliberate
over our annual calendar. As you know, we need to complete this calendar many months in advance so that schools can
plan their activities and our community can plan their vacations. Accordingly, we calendared Bataan Day on Monday, April
5th and by doing so were able to give a substantial Easter break to students and faculty.
Recently, it was announced that Bataan Day would this year be celebrated on Friday 9th April. Clearly it would not make
sense to bring teachers and students back from their vacations to work on Monday 5th, and then have Tuesday 6th and
Friday 9th as holidays, and so, in line with the rubric on the calendar (“Asterixed* holidays will be fixed according to the
dates so marked in the calendar, and we shall not amend them if any subsequent official announcement places them
earlier or later”), may I confirm that:
Monday, April 5th will be a holiday as calendared and Friday April 9th will be a regular school day.

Sincerely,
David Toze

ATTENTION: CHANGE IN PROCEDURE
Dear Parents:

Every year we have to deal with the administrative burden of trying to collect from parents the $1000 Re-enrollment
Deposit. This is difficult for many parents, especially those whose fees are paid by the sponsoring company, and more
difficult still for the school trying to collect from parents, especially those who are not sure of their circumstances.

This year we shall try something different. There will be no re-enrollment deposit. Instead, we shall expect all
departing families to complete the WITHDRAWAL NOTIFICATION FORM on or before May 15th. Failure to do
so will lead to a deduction of $1,000.00 from the Facilities Upgrade Deposit.

As I am sure you understand, we at school face considerable pressure from families applying to enter their children into
ISM. We have to establish the May 15th deadline in order for us to be fair to those families on our waitlist. The earlier you
can tell us that you are leaving school, the sooner we can provide clear answers to in-coming families.

Sincerely Yours,
David Toze
Superintendent

From the Board of Trustees:
Dear Parents:

First of all, we would like to thank you for your continuing support of International School Manila, Inc. (the
‘Corporation’). The Corporation is a non-stock, non-profit membership organization whose business, property, and affairs
are managed by a Board of Trustees consisting of ten (10) Members.

Our By-laws give you a central role in the governance of the Corporation, with five of the ten Board seats being
allocated to Associate Members. This year, there will be two (2) vacancies from the rank of Associate Membership. With
this in mind, we seek your nominations for these posts, which must be submitted to the Corporate Secretary (at Room
P089, Administration Office, ISM Campus) on or before 08 April 2010.

All Associate Member candidates, who are members in good standing, will be interviewed by the Committee on
Trustees, and those whose skill-sets and profiles best meet the needs of the School will be endorsed to the community for
election.

Voting may be done in advance of, or at, the Annual General Meeting (AGM). From 11 May to 19 May 2010, a
ballot box will be established in the administrative office area near the Corporate Secretary’s office for those who wish to
vote in advance of the AGM. Proxy Forms which you submitted at the beginning of this year (enclosed in your Enrollment
Packet) will be used solely for attendance purposes and to determine presence of quorum at the AGM, and cannot be used
to vote.

The AGM will be held on 20 May 2010 in the Fine Arts Theater, and members of the community who have not
voted should cast their ballots at that meeting. Results will be announced as soon as the assigned auditing firm has
concluded the count.

Prospective candidates for the Board should read the attached nomination and election procedure and guidelines in
full. The nomination and election procedure and guidelines may also be viewed at the ISM website (www.ismanila.org).

THE COMMITTEE ON TRUSTEES

Board of Trustees

INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL MANILA, INC.

Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Members
20 May 2010

NOMINATION / ELECTION GUIDELINES

For Associate Member Candidates
1. Our By-laws have clarified the function of the Board of Trustees (the “Board”) and the relationship it enjoys with the Superintendent.
Essentially, the responsibility of the Board is to ensure that the School remains true to its Vision, Mission and Core Beliefs, that the
Corporation’s financial and accounting reporting systems are appropriately managed and audited and that the Corporation is legally
secure. The Board hires (and evaluates) a Superintendent who is responsible for all day-to-day decisions in the School.
2. It follows from this that we are hoping to find Trustees who understand that their work will be focused on policy and strategy as well
as financial scrutiny rather than any involvement in the operations of the School. We shall certainly be looking for Trustees with a
professional background in financial matters, but also for those with significant leadership experience in management,
administration, education, diplomacy and law. Clearly it would be advantageous for candidates to have worked on boards before and
who thus understand the role of the Trustee in big-picture thinking.
3. In a bird’s eye view, our By-laws require that the Board shall consist of ten (10) Members of the Corporation, five (5) of whom shall
be elected from the rank of the Sustaining and Honorary Members and five (5) of whom shall be elected from the rank of the
Associate Members. Following our By-laws, two (2) Sustaining or Honorary Member Trustees and another two (2) Associate Member
Trustees shall retire by the end of the third year of its application (i.e. SY 2009-2010). Thus, at the 20 May 2010 Annual General
Meeting (AGM), the Members shall elect two (2) Trustees out of the nominees from the rank of the Associate Membership.
4. All candidates must, of course, be Members of good standing in the Corporation – that is, in the case of Associate Members, be
current in terms of fee payments. There are, as well, certain criteria established in the Corporation Code that could conceivably

exclude candidates from standing (please refer to Section 3, Article 3 of the By-laws). Associate Member Candidates will, by their
signature on this document, declare that (a) they are Members in good standing of the Corporation and (b) individuals who are not
in breach of criteria established in the Corporation Code.
5. Candidates from the rank of Associate Members must submit their certificates of candidacy to the Committee on Trustees (the
“Committee”), through the Corporate Secretary’s office at P089, Administration Office, ISM Campus, by 08 April 2010 which
consist of the following:
a) Resume – with appropriate bio data and covering personal and professional background; and
b) Letter of Intent indicating that the candidate is an Associate Member and outlining the individual’s qualities and skills that will be
relevant to the ISM Board of Trustees.
6. From 09 April 2010 up to 23 April 2010, each candidate shall engage in a dialogue with the Board’s Committee on Trustees
whose task is to review and recommend candidates coming from the rank of Associate Members who meet the foregoing criteria,
and whose portfolios of skills are best equipped to fill vacancies in the Board.
7. The Committee will recommend candidates to the current Board of Trustees, no later than 27 April 2010. The Board will convey this
endorsement to the community at large, in advance of the election.
8. Those candidates who do not receive the endorsement of the Committee may choose to withdraw from the election and should do
so, in writing, to the Corporate Secretary on or before 27 April 2010. Candidates who do not receive the endorsement but still wish
to stand for election will be included in the Final List of Candidates that will be published on 06 May 2010 to the community.
9. To guide the community in their choice, the Committee will also send out the resumes and letters of intent of all candidates, as
previously submitted. This is the only campaign information that will be made publicly available.
10. Candidates must undertake not to publish, or otherwise disseminate or encourage or allow others to publish on their behalf, any
additional information that may encourage community members to vote in a particular way. It is not in the interest of the School –
or the candidates - for there to be electioneering of any kind. It is not possible for the School to filter out anonymous text messages
or e mails or blog sites, but we would hope that the community-at-large will understand that those people who engage in such
activities are behaving contrary to the best interests of the School.
11. On 11 May 2010, a seven (7) working day period for the early casting of votes will begin. This replaces the proxy system and is
designed to encourage maximum participation by the community. Ballot boxes will be located in the Administration Office.
12. On 20 May 2010, the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of Members will be held at which reports from the Board and Superintendent
will be presented. This will also be an opportunity for all Members who have not yet cast their votes to select Trustees for the new
Board. Results of the election will be announced on that same evening.

(For parents interested to stand up for election, please RETURN duly accomplished Form below to ISM Board Office.)
