The document discusses water hammer calculations and selection of pressure relief valves for pumping stations.

Water hammer arises from pressure oscillations caused by rapid changes in flow velocity in a pipe. These oscillations travel as waves through the pipe.

For an elastic pipe, the wave speed is calculated based on the bulk modulus of the fluid, fluid density, modulus of elasticity of the pipe material, and pipe diameter and wall thickness.

Water hammer arises from pressure oscillations - alternating pressure increases and decreases caused by a rapid modification of flow system in amain carrying aliquid . These oscillation run
from one end of the main to the other , in aperiodic swinging motion .
According to classic Joukowski equation , the water hammer pressure rise h is directly
proportion to the wave speed a.

h=

a v
g

.(1)

Where
h = water hammer pressure rise ( m )
a = wave speed ( m / sec )
v = change in flow velocity ( m / s )
g = acceleration due to gravity ( m / s2 )
The value of wave speed , a , is influenced by many factors , some of which cannot be accurately
estimated in a typical pipeline . For an elastic pipe , the wave speed is expressed as :

a=

w
g

D c

k
E
e ).( 2 )

where ;
a = wave speed ( m / s )
K = bulk modulus of the fluid medium ( N / m2 )
= fluid density ( kg / m3 )
D = pipe diameter ( mm )
E = modulus of elasticity of the pipe material (N / m2 )
e = pipe wall thickness ( mm)

from equation no ( 2 )
E = 1.7*1011 (N / m2) this value taken from AMIANATIT handbook
K = 2.05*109 ( N / m2 ) this value taken from AMIANTIT handbook
C = 1 - 2 , ( for ductile iron = 0.28 )
D = 500 mm & e = 9 mm
a = 1127 m / s
from equation no ( 1 )
h = 23 m
in this case the increasing pressure is very high so we will use pressure relief valve
( safety valve )
selection of pressure relief valve :
1- Diameter is given by :

D=28 . 6

Qmax

this equation is taken from Hytran program help

max

where :
D = diameter ( mm )
Q max = discharge at max. opening at max. pressure ( l / sec. ) = 400 l/s
H max. pressure at max. valve opening ( m ) = 234 m
D = 163 mm
Take D = 200 mm
